Book excerpt: Nearly 20 percent of all migrant farmworkers are adolescents, and as many as half of these may be unaccompanied by their families. These youth clearly have special health and educational needs that require commitment from social institutions and agencies. In June 1991, a conference held in Delray Beach, Florida by the National Coalition of Advocates for Students on health issues affecting adolescent farmworkers was attended by educators and health workers who serve migrant youth, local and national farmworker advocates, and adolescent farmworkers. Participants assessed health needs, identified barriers to addressing those needs, developed priorities, and drafted recommendations. This report presents highlights of the conference, supplemented by interview data collected from service providers and adolescent farmworkers. Conference findings and related interview excerpts are organized around five major areas of concern: (1) substance abuse (drinking and drug use); (2) sexuality (sex education, teenage pregnancy, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, risk factors related to HIV infection, barriers to HIV prevention, and positive programs and practices); (3) mental health (psychosocial stress, family problems, generation gap and cultural gap between parents and teenagers, domestic violence, school attitudes, and dropping out); (4) physical health (nutrition, dental health, and access to health care); and (5) occupational health and safety (child labor, housing, sexual harassment, field sanitation, and pesticides). Extensive recommendations are offered to health care programs, community-based youth programs, local and state education agencies, and national advocacy organizations. Appendices list relevant publications, conference participants, and health service providers interviewed, and detail the size and composition of the U.S. farm labor force. (SV)

Holmes was invited to trek with his companions clandestinely through the desert into Arizona and was jailed with them before they were deported. This “embodied anthropology” deepens our theoretical understanding of the ways in which social inequities come to be perceived as normal and natural in society and in health care. Book excerpt: In New Deal Medicine, physician and historian Michael Grey brings to light the diversity, reach, and complexity of the medical care programs of the Farm Security Administration. Drawing on oral histories, archival records, and medical journals from the 1930s and 1940s, Grey finds the programs were both a rehearsal for more modern forms of medical organization and a lightning rod for critics of "socialized medicine." He assesses the compromises made to try to preserve the programs' somewhat "secret objective" of providing the poor with health care while not running afoul of conservative politicians and their colleagues in the AMA. Acknowledging the effect of changing demographics (doctors, nurses, and farmers alike marched off to war) and economics, Grey contends that these factors do not fully explain the demise of the FSA experiment in health care. Rather, the political winds shifted at the same time that the medical profession acted to protect its authority over the practice of medicine. New Deal Medicine shows that, by the peculiarly American style of "incrementalism," many of the FSA medical care structures and goals have been at least partially realized in the United States and in Canada. The lessons learned by the FSA personnel were transferred into health programs in Canada, in the labor unions, and finally in Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society."
