Book excerpt: In this Element, we examine how organizational researchers have published articles contributing to organization theory in high quality organizational journals, and we examine how healthcare researchers have drawn on organization theory in healthcare management journals. We have two main aims in writing this Element. The first is to motivate scholars working in the field of general organizational and management studies to increasingly use healthcare settings as an empirical context for their work in theory development. Our second aim is to encourage healthcare researchers to increase their use of organizational theory to advance knowledge about the provision of healthcare services. Our investigations revealed a growing number of organizational studies situated in healthcare. We also found a disappointing level of connection between research published in organization journals and research published in healthcare journals. We provide explanations for this division, and encourage more crossdisciplinary work in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varying factors such as the aging of the population, the increasing burden of chronic conditions and the recent global pandemic have highlighted the need for a redesign of healthcare production processes. This book provides a useful framework to capture the necessary organizational conditions to successfully implement operations strategies within healthcare organizations. The Operations Management (OM) function has become crucial; in fact, it is essential for managing the flow of both patients and supplies, in an efficient, responsive and flexible manner. The book outlines the models and operational solutions to these two key areas that characterize OM in healthcare: patient flow logistics, with the goal of optimizing the entire production cycle from first access by the patient to discharge and follow-up; and supply chain management, with the goal of ensuring that resources are successfully managed throughout the production lifecycle. The examples and case studies included in the book are based on the experience of the author who has had the opportunity to do research and training in the area of operations management, within different types of healthcare delivery organizations at both the national and international level, and often at publicly owned institutions. The book is a useful guide for students, managers and policy makers interested in the development and implementation of the OM function in healthcare delivery organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizations, Communication, and Health focuses on theories and constructs of organizational communication and their relationship to health. The goal of the volume is to offer a current picture of organizational and organizing processes and practices related to health. Research in the area of health communication has expanded in recent years, and this research has advanced understandings of campaigns, patient/provider interactions, and social support. However, a gap in the area of health, organizations, and organizing processes emerged, a niche this volume fills. It does so by having chapters identify an organizational theory or organizing process and how aspects of that theory relate to health. Chapters discuss how to marry theory to practice and the other factors (e.g., organizational structure, role, occupation, industry, or environment) that need to be considered in the process of utilizing the theory in organizations. This volume, aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying health communication, as well as health professionals, provides useful theory and practice related the organizations and health, and issues a call for further theorizing on the practice of health communication in organizations.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the concept of ‘healthy healthcare’ and posits that this new concept is necessary in light of a shortage of healthcare staff in the near future. Healthy healthcare implies that healthcare systems are designed, managed and financed in balance with the available resources to improve workers’ health and performance. Ultimately, a balanced perspective taking into account the patient, the staff and the complex healthcare system will lead to a more resource-efficient delivery of high-quality healthcare services. The book synthesizes evidence-based practice and research on the links between healthcare services, employee health and wellbeing, and quality of healthcare from an interdisciplinary perspective. Written by leading experts in this rapidly expanding field of inquiry, this is the first book ever compiled on the subject with such scope and breadth. It discusses how to conduct interventions and research on healthy healthcare with different populations and settings. The chapters critically examine the links between these pillars; and identify research gaps in both methodology and content from the perspectives of psychology, medicine, nursing, economy, law, technology, management and more. This innovative book is of interest to researchers and students of health sciences, public health, health economics and allied disciplines, as well as to stakeholders in the healthcare industry. Chapter 24 of this book is available open access under a CC-By NC-ND 4.0 license at link.springer.com
