A contractor with a poor safety program can adversely affect quality, productivity, schedules, and overall cost. This book explains how to manage project safety and improve the odds of an injury-free workplace. If project managers are to apply their judgment wisely, they need to know the rationale for each requirement, and how to implement it. They must know what is to be done, who is to do it, and when and how it should be done. The author considers all these factors. Construction Site Safety addresses the fundamental elements of a successful construction safety program. The author explains the industry trends and best practices that enable job site managers or field engineers to understand the necessary steps to ensure that contractors have and follow safety guidelines. Book excerpt: This is the third book of the series that has documented best practice within the building industry, detailing the many processes required to procure buildings. The first book, titled City of Layers: Reconfiguring the Built Environment for Sustainability, outlines how buildings can be procured sustainably. The second book, titled The Project Managers Checklist for Building Projects, Delivery Strategies and Processes, details how design and procurement processes should be planned and managed. This third book focuses on construction, post-design, and procurement. It outlines how the planned and desired outcome in terms of quality can be achieved safely whilst minimising harm to the environment. Each book was formatted for operational use for specific projects, providing a roadmap of information with checklists that also doubles as a valuable and portable paper trail, adding value to the projects quality assurance processes. On completion of project, this book, complete with project notes, can provide a historical record of what was considered and what was done at each phase of the project life. This third book, titled Construction Supervision: QC + HSE Management in Practice, details the in-practice monitoring and controlling aspects of construction works. It outlines what should be considered as the supervision process is planned and what should be actioned as construction works proceeds. In writing this book, the hope is such knowledge will enable practitioners to focus on doing the required things and ensuring the things are done as right so construction liabilities and risks are minimised/mitigated, and thereby, substantial value is added to what is done, benefiting both the project and society at large.

Recognizing this, Construction Contracts is a fully revised edition of the UK’s leading textbook on the law governing this area. Brought up to date with recent cases and developments in the law as it stands at July 2000, this new edition: takes full account of the effects of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, the Arbitration Act 1996, the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 and the changes in the legal system brought about by the Woolf reforms includes extended coverage of financial protection, construction insurance and tendering controls, as well as the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations has been revised to take account of changes to the common standard-form contracts, particularly the New Engineering Contract and the GC/Works family of contracts. Retaining the same basic approach as its successful predecessors, this important text introduces the general principles that underlie contracts in construction, illustrating them by reference to the most important standard forms currently in use.

Book excerpt: This reference serves construction businesses and managers who want quick answers to complicated questions. It makes the difficult task of complying with the 29 CFR 1926 regulations easier to manage. From General Safety Provisions to Fall Protection to Toxic and Hazardous Substance, it examines the standards of 29 CFR 1926 one-by-one with non-technical, implementor-friendly explanations of the requirements and how to fulfill them. It provides a breakdown, subpart by subpart, of the training standards for the construction industry. In addition, the book shows how to prevent the four leading causes of fatal accidents, which ten OSHA standards construction sites violate most often, and how non-Spanish-speaking managers can effectively communicate safety requirements with Spanish-speaking employees. It provides answers to a broad range of compliance questions, including who is obligated to observe the law, what the law requires, what OSHA compliance obligations are, and how state OSHA standards compare to federal OSHA standards.

Employers MUST provide their employees with a workplace that does not have serious hazards and follow all relevant OSHA safety and health standards. Employers must comply with specific standards. All employers in the construction industry must also have injury and illness prevention programs. Contractors and employers who do construction work must comply with standards in 29CFR1926. SubpartC, General Safety and Health Provisions, as well as other specific sections of these standards, include the responsibilities for each contractor/employer to initiate and maintain injury and illness prevention programs, provide for a competent person to conduct frequent and regular inspections, and instruct each employee to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions and know what regulations are applicable to the work environment. Employees must be provided training in a language and vocabulary they can understand. US Department of Labor Publication OSHA 2202-09R, Construction Industry Digest, contains summaries of the most frequently used standards in the construction industry. The standards are presented alphabetically followed by the reference to the appropriate regulation. With few exceptions, standards in this digest are from Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part1926. Remember, this booklet is only a digest of basic applicable standards and should not be considered as a complete substitute for any provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHAct), or for any standards issued under the OSHAct. The requirements discussed in this publication are summarized and abbreviated. The actual source standards are referenced at the end of each topic discussed; consult the CFR for a more complete explanation of the specific standards listed.
