Book excerpt: To better understand the ramifications of childhood sexual abuse in females, the work of art presented in this thesis explored the symptomatology of the body, repetitive patterns of retraumatization, and the healing power of creativity through dance. The author's somatic symptoms of panic attacks and autoimmune disorders and her struggle with addiction and eating disorders are viewed as representing the repression of the Feminine essence resulting from childhood sexual victimization. The thesis addresses the questions: How do symptoms of repressed childhood sexual abuse in women manifest when creativity and femininity are denied? How can the retraumatization create the opportunity to heal and dance with the sacred Feminine? This thesis uses heuristic methodology to guide the research, which explores the deeper meaning behind somatic symptoms and soulful longing and the process of healing through dance.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this culminating project was to develop a framework through a support group for female and female-identifying victims of sexual assault and violence across university settings using a DMT inspired framework. Four modules to highlight the combination of trauma- informed movement and psychoeducation to further address, acknowledge and offer support for female and female-identifying victims. The themes explore awareness and prevention, trauma and the brain, trauma and the body, and dance/movement therapy frameworks to further investigate how sexual trauma is processed. Although support groups are available for student in most counseling centers within universities, this approach is different, offering a support group that uses movement as the modality for processing and exploring. The literature review includes research addressing somatic based theories and frameworks to sexual trauma, psychological influences, how DMT relates to sexual trauma, preventions and approaches within higher education, and established frameworks for trauma treatment. The trauma-informed movement and psychoeducation modules are intended to bring awareness to the depths sexual trauma can have on victims, and acknowledge the benefit of using movement as a healing tool and approach during the recovery process.

Eleven movement professionals were interviewed in a semi-structured research format. My direct experience and knowledge of sexual abuse, sexual trauma, and creative movement processes are interwoven with the research question: do creative dance/movement therapy processes contribute to the dynamic of healing for women transforming sexual trauma? Book Synopsis Absolution and Defiance by : Lara Elizabeth Tant
Download or read book Absolution and Defiance written by Lara Elizabeth Tant and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this performance-based culminating project was to promote social justice and advocacy through giving a voice to the lived experiences of the victims and survivors of human trafficking. This domestic population has been underrepresented in literature and underserved in practice. Dance/movement therapy (DMT) as a component of post-trafficking services created a safe space to use self-expression to improvise new narratives on the pathway to healing. The use of DMT provided the means to express and investigate deeply imprinted body trauma. The impact and efficacy of DMT witnessed in clinical practice was widespread across this population, not dependent upon the survivors' readiness to exit "the life," but instead supporting those still enmeshed with their traffickers as well as those working towards reintegration post-trafficking. However, this project focused on one survivor and describes how performance used witness as a method to help her reclaim her body when emerging from sexual slavery. By examining the method of dance performance as a tool in DMT for self- empowerment in the healing of sexual trauma, this project served to help one survivor find her voice and observe her effect on others, promoting her self-efficacy.

Book Synopsis The Use of Dance and Movement for the Embodied Healing of Interpersonal Trauma in Women and Girls: A Systematic Review by : Catherine Xinyu Liang
Download or read book The Use of Dance and Movement for the Embodied Healing of Interpersonal Trauma in Women and Girls: A Systematic Review written by Catherine Xinyu Liang and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpersonal trauma is a serious and devastating problem for women and girls from all walks of life. Research has shown that there are physiological consequences for experiencing trauma, and as such, treatment for trauma may need to target the body. Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) has been emerging in the current literature as one body-oriented treatment approach that is effective in helping women and girls heal from interpersonal trauma. This review examines how practitioners are currently using DMT for this population, what treatment outcomes have been observed, and what the racial/ethnic identities and international contexts are for survivors who have benefited from DMT. Through textual narrative evidence synthesis, this review systematically examined recent literature to find that the characteristics and structure of DMT vary greatly between different practitioners, the participants of DMT are very diverse, and there are many commonly observed outcomes: increased physical ability, increased emotional capacity, mind-body integration, safety, aid with trauma processing, empowerment, social support, and fun. This review also gives recommendations for practitioners who wish to utilize this treatment method: conduct DMT in groups; use the body to create metaphor, imagery, and symbolism; give survivors choices in how they participate in DMT; use music purposefully; and don’t forget to have fun.

Finally, recreational pole dancing is situated in regards to sexual health and somatics as a sex positive, pleasure-oriented, and creative healing process. This research aims to legitimize pole dancing within the art therapy community as an expressive art modality that offers transformative qualities for trauma processing and sexual healing. Possibilities for integrating further sex education into clinical practices, as well as learning from dance/movement modalities are considered.
