Book excerpt: Back Cover You must purchase this long awaited book! This is a woman of valor and I have professionally known her for over 3 years through her being an opening act for our show “Conscious Comedy Explosion!” and for performing her phenomenal poetry to our audience. Not only does she awake the crowd with her talent for breathing life into words but she makes your spirit jump to attention to get the “Word” that God wants you to hear. She is amazing! Pretina is currently working on doing comedy for our shows. Her poetry is thought provoking and her sense of humor about life is exciting. I wish Pretina McNeil the best success with her upcoming book. Makena Hayes-Gargonnu “Celebrity” Event Producer Conscious Comedy Explosion! --------------------------------------------- The thought provoking poetry of this book will have you asking questions. Questions that are relevant in our walk with Christ. Such as, how much further would we if we stopped living for ourselves and started living to fulfill God's purpose in our life? It also has an empowering effect causing us to stand firm in our belief that our Heavenly Father is guarding, protecting, and seeing to our need. So what do we have to worry about? However, the ups and downs, frustration, and aggravations are needed to sculpt us from a diamond in the rough into a gleaming fully faceted gem that shines brightly. I believe that Pretina has written a poetry book that is inspiring, challenging, and can be a step by step guideline to walking out your destiny. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Shellie Dailey Dean of Immanuel Bible College --------------------------------------------- "The poetry of Ms. Pretina McNeil is simplistically classy with an urban edge that challenges the senses of the soul. You will go from laughter to introspective thoughts that ask and answer questions from a real place of honesty. As you read you are sure to be absolutely BLESSED! Pastor Cedric Baltrip --------------------------------------------- I'm just saying... Lessons on life, Love and Faith, is a refreshing collection of invigorating words of hope, love, peace and joy. Through our trials and tribulations that have turned into triumphs a praise of adoration towards our Lord is fitting. This book is full of spirit led poetry. Sit back and fasten your seat belt, as you open this book, you truly will declare that the Lord is good." Di Smith

Book excerpt: NOW WITH A NEW CHAPTER AND AN UPDATED RESOURCES SECTION Suicide has touched the lives of nearly half of all Americans, yet it is rarely talked about openly. In her highly acclaimed book, Susan Blauner—a survivor of multiple suicide attempts—offers guidance and hope for those contemplating ending their lives and for their loved ones. “Each word written with thoughtful intent; each story told with the deepest of honesty and humility, and in doing so Blauner puts forward a life-saving book."—Daniel J. Reidenberg, PsyD, Executive Director, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (www.save.org) “I continued to romanticize my death by suicide: who would find me; what I’d look like. I spent hundreds of hours planning my funeral, imagining the remorse of my family and friends. I wrote good-bye letters, composed wills, and disrupted the lives of everyone close to me. Then reality hit.”—Susan Rose Blauner The statistics on suicide are staggering. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 800,000 people die by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds, and for each completed suicide there may be twenty or more attempts. In How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me, Susan Blauner is the perfect emissary for a message of hope and a program of action for these millions of people. A survivor of multiple suicide attempts, she explains the complex feelings and fantasies that surround suicidal thoughts. In a direct, nonjudgmental, and loving voice, she offers affirmations and suggestions for those experiencing life-ending thoughts, and for their friends and family. With an introduction by Bernie Siegel, M.D., this important, timely book has now been updated with a revised resources section, and a new chapter on the author’s experiences since the book’s initial publication.

Book excerpt: In the 100 days of genocide that ravaged Rwanda in 1994, one million people were killed and as many as 500,000 women and girls were raped. No one was spared. Grandmothers were raped in front of their grandchildren; young girls witnessed their families being massacred before being taken as sex slaves. Nearly all the women who survived were victims of sexual violence or were profoundly affected by it. An astounding 70 percent are HIV-positive. In Rwanda’s social and cultural climate, survivors who speak out face discrimination and isolation. The Men Who Killed Me features testimonials from 17 Rwandan survivors. Through their narratives and Samer Muscati’s powerful portraits of them, these 16 women and one man bear witness not only to the crimes they and their countrymen endured, but to the incredible courage that has allowed them to survive and flourish.

Book excerpt: Julia Buckley needs a miracle. Like a third of the UK population, she has a chronic pain condition. According to her doctors, it can't be cured. She doesn't believe them. She does believe in miracles, though. It's just a question of tracking one down. Julia's search for a cure takes her on a global quest, exploring the boundaries between science, psychology and faith with practitioners on the fringes of conventional, traditional and alternative medicine. From neuroplastic brain rewiring in San Francisco to medical marijuana in Colorado, Haitian vodou rituals to Brazilian 'spiritual surgery', she's willing to try anything. Can miracles happen? And more importantly, what happens next if they do? Raising vital questions about the modern medical system, this is also a story about identity in a system historically skewed against 'hysterical' female patients, and the struggle to retain a sense of self under the medical gaze. Heal Me explains why modern medicine's current approach to chronic pain is failing patients. It explores the importance of faith, hope and cynicism, and examines our relationships with our doctors, our beliefs and ourselves.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DATE: January 26, 1955. It was my twentieth birthday. THE PLACE: A train on its way from Salt Lake City, Utah to Sacramento, California. I sat looking out a train window at the scenery speeding by. MY THOUGHTS: A jumble of emotions. I was on my way overseas to Korea to serve a tour of duty with the United States Air Force. But first I would stop at McClellan Air Force Base (AFB) near Sacramento for overseas processing. I was bitter about my overseas assignment, but I was glad that the Korean armistice had finally been signed. At least nobody would be shooting at me, and I wouldn't have to kill someone else in the name of war. Just a couple of weeks earlier, my girl friend had rejected my proposal of marriage. I had asked and asked God to give that girl to me for my wife. God had said no, and I was mad at Him. MORE TRAVEL: By train to Travis AFB, California and an overnight stay; by plane to Hickam AFB, Hawaii for a short two hour stopover; and by plane to Tokyo, Japan for three days. THE STORY BEGINS. The stopover in Tokyo, Japan for three days was for special orientation (no pun intended). In that short time, I Sampled Tokyo's night life, had sex with a Japanese girl in a back alley, and spent the night in a hotel room with a young Japanese prostitute. It wasnt my usual style, but then I was mad at God. I decided to hurt Him the only way I knew how: SIN, SIN, SIN. Soon I was in Korea starting my twelve month tour of duty. Being in Korea was not my idea of fun, but there were certain diversions to take my mind off my misery. I drank a bit, partied a bit, and enjoyed the services of several Korean prostitutes a lot. Finally, I got tired of partying and settled for shacking up with a Korean girl named Peggy. We rented a room in a village not far from the Air Force compound where I was stationed. This village hideaway gave me some respite from being on call 24 hours a day. In spite of all this, I continued my lifelong habit of praying every night before going to sleep. Then there came a time that my nightly prayers stopped: I couldn't continue to ask God to forgive me for fornication when I had no real intention of stopping, let alone marrying Peggy. Immersed in guilt, I started seriously considering suicide. My dislike for service life and the poor living conditions in Korea helped to deepen my depression. It seemed as though others also had similar wishes for me when one of my fellow airmen said to me in an angry tone, "Meredith, if I were you I'd kill myself!" And then a few days later, Peggy, in reference to some situation, said, "If I was in a fix like that, I'd kill myself!" One morning, after spending the night in the village with Peggy, the two of us were walking in the rain along the bank of a small river which was swollen and quite swift due to the heavy seasonal rains. Normally, it would have been a simple matter to cross the river further upstream near the village where Peggy lived, but the water there was now about chest deep. We were therefore walking downstream to a bridge that crossed the river. At that point, the highway to Seoul also crossed the river. Peggy was going to catch a bus to Seoul, and I was headed back to the Air Force compound. As we rounded a bend in the river, a commotion in the river caught our attention. It was an elderly Korean farmer being swept downstream by the raging current. He was on his back and unable to right himself because of a heavy wooden plow strapped to his back! I quickly emptied my pockets, kicked off my rubber Korean shoes, and jumped into the water. (My Boy Scout training was about to pay off!) I quickly reached the old man, pulled him loose from the plow, and got him safely to shore. Then I rescued his plow. The old man was cut and bleeding from the pounding he’d taken from being swept against the large boulders in the river, but his wounds did not appear serious enough for emergency first ai

Book excerpt: A new pastoral contribution on the enduring subject of confession in Christian life. Confession: The Healing of the Soul is not just about what is termed sacramental confession. Its frame of reference is much wider and includes discussion of those celebrated writers who wrote confessions – Augustine, Kierkegaard, Tolstoy, Foucault, Freud, Jung, John of the Cross and Wittgenstein. This book will be of interest to all Christians of any denomination who engage in sacramental confession – clergy but also pastoral workers and those millions who actually attend confession as part of their lives. In the post-Freudian age confession of any kind has had a bad press but is now coming back into popularity as guilt and sin become helpful concepts. Peter Tyler, an author and practicing psychotherapist, argues that rather than being something to consign to the rubbish heap of history, confession offers unexplored potential for the healing of the postmodern soul. The book addresses all those engaged in psychotherapeutic and healing practices and ministries.

Book excerpt: When letters don’t seem to make sense to a child, when he squirms in his seat and can hardly sit still, and when he has difficulty in communicating or may have an ‘unacceptable’ habit, what do we do? Indira Roy Mandal, specialising in child psychology, addresses some of these sensitive issues and goes an extra mile to help parents, caregivers and teachers to think about these challenges dealing with childhood disorders as well as accepting them. ‘Catch them young and seek help at the earliest’ is her mantra. Many such stories in the book may be your story. We need to assure ourselves that the road begins from here and it is a journey of self-realization and learning. During the pandemic-induced lockdown times, it is the children who are the worst hit and suffer silently, emoting behind their gadgets. Depression, suicidal ideations, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders are on the rise. The author provides certain pointers on how to keep up with the child’s mental as well as physical state, to help them evolve as well-balanced, socially productive and responsible individuals.
