Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical and comprehensive title provides illuminating, evidence-based approaches in headache medicine for using traditional medical therapies in conjunction with alternative approaches to care. In all, the book details how multidisciplinary management and the combination of conventional and complementary medical services – integrative medicine – leads to superior patient outcomes: improved patient satisfaction, reduced stress, and more readily treatable, less serious illness. State-of-the-art and developed by experts in their fields, these 12 chapters present research and analysis of a wide range of non-pharmacologic interventions in headache care, seeking to inspire clinicians to formulate personalized headache treatment plans, and to work together by integrating their expertise in a multidisciplinary context to address patients’ unique conditions, needs, circumstances, and treatment. Chapter one provides an overview of integrative medicine and proposes a step-wise approach for incorporating integrative modalities into a headache practice. Chapter two focuses on the attention to be paid to relevant aspects of a patient’s medical history. The next four chapters discuss lifestyle factors that play a role in headache, including trigger identification, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. The scope of mind-body therapies such as acupuncture, yoga, and mindfulness is explored in chapter seven, and the psychology of pain is the subject of chapter eight. Chapter nine investigates the safety and efficacy of nutraceuticals, or pharmaceutical alternatives. The final three chapters review neuromodulation and interventional approaches to headache management. An invaluable and timely contribution to the clinical literature, Integrative Headache Medicine – An Evidence-Based Guide for Clinicians will be of great interest to neurologists, pain physicians, primary care clinicians, behavioral psychologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, social workers, nutritionists and any other health professionals interested in delivering the highest quality care for headache patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. WILKINSON Patients with frequent or daily headaches pose a very difficult problem for the physician who has to treat them, particularly as many patients think that there should be a medicine or medicines which give them instant relief. In the search for the compound which would meet this very natural desire, many drugs have been manufactured and the temptation for the physician is either to increase the dose of a drug which seems to be, at any rate, partially effective, or to add one or more drugs to those which the patient is already taking. Although there have been some references to the dangers of overdosage of drugs for migraine in the past, it was not until relatively recently that it was recognized that drugs given for the relief of headache, if taken injudiciously, may themselves cause headache. The first drugs to be implicated in this way were ergotamine and phenazone. In the case of ergotamine tartrate, the dangers of ergotism were well known as this was a disorder which had been known and written about for many years. In the treatment of headache, fully blown ergotism is rare and in recent years has usually been due to self-medication in doses much greater than those prescribed although there are a few recorded cases where toxic amounts have been given.

Book excerpt: "Despite that headache is felt at some time by nearly everybody, and almost half the world's adults at any one time have recent personal experience of one or more of the three very common headache disorders, much is unknown about the public-health impact of these conditions. It is not known how, or how much, they affect many of the populations of the world, or how healthcare and other resources are utilized to mitigate their effects. This first global enquiry into these matters illuminates the worldwide neglect of a major public-health problem, and reveals the inadequacies of responses to it in countries throughout the world. The Atlas of Headache Disorders presents data acquired by WHO in collaboration with Lifting The Burden: the Global Campaign against Headache. Most of the information was collected in a questionnaire survey of neurologists, general practitioners and patients' representatives from 101 countries, performed from October 2006 until March 2009. Epidemiological data were compiled from published studies through a systematic review, and supplemented by data gathered in population-based studies undertaken within the Global Campaign." --Publisher website.

Discover the answers to common questions about this nearly universal human experience. Part of the Q&A Health Guides series, this book offers a broad introduction to headaches using an engaging question-and-answer format. The book's questions explore the different types of headaches, including tension-type headaches, migraines, and less common but more severe headache disorders such as cluster headaches. Readers will discover the causes and triggers of headaches, how headache disorders are diagnosed and managed, and the warning signs that a headache may be an indication of a serious underlying health issue such as a brain tumor. The book also examines the often unacknowledged toll that severe headache disorders can have on individuals, relationships, and even the economy. Augmenting the main text, a collection of 5 case studies illustrate key concepts and issues through relatable stories and insightful recommendations. The Common Misconceptions section at the beginning of the volume dispels 5 long-standing myths about headaches, directing readers to additional information in the text. The glossary defines terms that may be unfamiliar to readers, while the directory of resources curates a list of the most useful books, websites, and other materials. Finally, whether they're looking for more information about this subject or any other health-related topic, readers can turn to the Guide to Health Literacy section for practical tools and strategies for finding, evaluating, and using credible sources of health information both on and off the internet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Headache disorders are among the most common disorders of the nervous system. They are pandemic and, in many cases, they are recurrent and can accompany the patient for the whole life. These disorders impose a substantial burden on headache sufferers, on their families and on society: the individual impact is measured by the frequency and severity of attacks, while the societal burden is measured in terms of loss of activity at work and school as well as of costs for the health system. As a matter of facts, headaches are ranked in the top ten, and maybe the top five, causes of disability worldwide: they are therefore extraordinarily common. Population-based studies have mostly focused on migraine, which, even if it is the most frequently studied headache disorder, is not the most common . Other types of headache, such as the more prevalent TTH and sub-types of the more disabling chronic daily headache, have so far received less attention and need to be better investigated. This book will provide a useful tool to a wide medical population, who is required specific skills to diagnose and manage these frequent and often disabling disorders .Furthermore, it could also represents a compendium for medical students who are usually introduced to this topic through multidisciplinary university programmes.

Book excerpt: Headache is a huge public health problem and migraine alone cost 27 billion Euros per year in Europe. It is therefore important how the health care service for headache patients is organised throughout the world. Patients seen at headache clinics are more severely affected than those seen in general practice, and headache clinics need to be familiar with a long list of relatively rare headache disorders. Part of the "Frontiers in Headache Research" series, this volume is the first book to focus specifically on headache clinics, their classification and organization, their methods of diagnosis, and their approaches to multi-disciplinary management. The clinical features of patients seen in headache clinics are thoroughly discussed. The value of a number of diagnostic laboratory techniques including when and how to use neuro-imaging is discussed. Also a number of more specialised methods employed only in referral headache centres are covered, such as nitro-glycerine challenge, indomethacin test, and oxygen breathing. The treatment options for severely affected patients are discussed including the possibilities of combining two or more prophylactic medications, the use of epidural blood patch and the different methods for discontinuation of medication overuse. This volume will be an invaluable resource for neurologists, physicians in headache/pain clinics and interested general practitioners.

This WHO publication brings together a wide range of information on neurological resources across 109 countries, with the participation of leading experts in neurology. The information is arranged under 15 broad themes and topics covered include: common neurological conditions and services in primary care and specialist settings; therapeutic drugs and services; number and types of health professionals; postgraduate teaching; financing issues and disability benefits; and the advocacy role of national associations and non-governmental organisations. The report highlights the fact that the available resources for neurological services in most countries are insufficient compared with the global need for neurological care; as well as the significant inequalities in resources across regions and income groups within countries.

The book fully examines the constellation of symptoms that constitute chronic daily headache, while also discussing the role of behavioral medicine and the important elements involved in taking a good history. The major forms and biology of chronic daily headache are covered, as is the role of diagnostic testing and treatment. The risk factors that lead patients to transform episodic primary headache disorders into the chronic form are examined. Invasive and neuromodulatory techniques are also discussed. A section on the classification of these disorders rounds out this important contribution to the literature. Chronic Headache – A Comprehensive Guide to Evaluation and Management will be of great interest to neurologists, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, and other clinicians with an interest in chronic daily headache.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migraine is an extraordinarily common, disabling, and painful disorder that affects over 36 million Americans and costs the US economy at least $32 billion per year. Nevertheless, it is frequently dismissed, ignored, and delegitimised. In this book, Joanna Kempner argues that this general dismissal of migraine can be traced back to the gendered social values embedded in the way we talk about, understand, and make policies for people in pain.
