Book excerpt: The end of the Second World War saw a “crisis of white masculinity” brought on by social, political, and economic change. He Thinks He’s Down explores the specific phenomenon of white men appropriating Black masculinities to benefit from what they believed were powerful Black masculinities. It reveals the intricate relationships between racialized gender identities, appropriation, and popular culture during the Civil Rights Era. Drawing on case studies from three genres of popular culture –the literature of Mailer and Kerouac, fashion in Playboy magazine and action narratives in Blaxploitation films – Katharine Bausch untangles the ways in which white male artists took on imagined Black masculinities in their work in order to negotiate what it meant to be a man in America at this time. In so doing, Bausch argues, white men’s use of Black masculinities drained Black men of their political and racial agency and reduced them once more to little more than stereotypes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable and powerful story of indomitable human spirit, passion and courage. In 1941 when Keith Watson, a teenage postal clerk from country Queensland, enlisted in the RAAF, he had absolutely no idea what he was getting himself into. The following four years were an adrenaline-filled ride of love, loss, mateship, ambition, courage and sacrifice, all recorded in an intimate 800-page diary. This is an account of how war tests character and puts the young on an accelerated path to maturity. From childhood and his first inspirational flight to his emergence as an elite Path Finder Force pilot, Keith’s story is compelling and tragic, yet uplifting. He confronts constant death and injury, challenges authority, learns to skipper a crew and finds his trademark humility running headlong into ego and ambition. Keith’s graphic accounts of Pathfinder missions bring a deepening sense of the relentless physical and psychological toll on the crews of Bomber Command. Counterbalancing these experiences are Keith’s relationships with wartime mates, the woman who loved him, and the UK families who sacrificed much on his behalf. Based on material never before released, Thinks He’s A Bird is a stunning account of service, sacrifice and two enduring and competing passions – flying and Norah, the love of Keith’s life. ,

The first was that her daughter-in-law seemed uncharacteristically distracted, even remote, from the events around her. Secondly, she understood with complete clarity that her own son was infatuated with the pretty little thing sitting opposite. She could see the longing in his eyes and trace it through every behavioural tick on show. She felt sure that the others, including the girl herself, must surely have registered such transparency, and she wondered what fireworks lay ahead. Another intriguing factor was the big blonde lad who sat there, apparently comfortable and confi dent, and yet in some way preoccupied. Something there required further investigation. Flo just couldn't see why the man's attractive wife would ever fi nd anything worth straying for in her own son's rather tawdry realm. Time would tell, but she knew her son wanted that girl.Spanning a generation, this mystery thriller moves between the City of London and Cape Town, rural Kent and the hills of Girona in north-eastern Spain, weaving a tale of lust and deception, romance and retribution.

Book excerpt: Theresa Schwegel Officer Down is the winner of the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. The Chicago Police Department says Samantha Mack shot her partner, Fred, during the confusion of a bungled pursuit. Mack says it was their quarry, a violent pedophile named Marco Trovic, who fired the deadly round in that darkened room. But Mack was knocked out and can't really say what happened. When no evidence of Trovic is found on the scene and the bullet is shown to have come from Mack's own gun, the Department labels Fred's death as a case of friendly fire. Back at the station, it seems no one believes Mack's account. Not Internal Affairs investigator Alex O'Conner, and not even Mack's lover, whose best attempts at support leave her as cold as the wind whipping across Lake Michigan. With the Department looking to quiet the bad press, Mack can't count on anyone to help her track down Trovic. Even if she can somehow find him in the dark recesses of Chicago's underworld, can she prove that Trovic was the shooter? With her back to the wall and her career at stake, now it's time for Mack to take matters into her own hands to clear her name—and avenge her partner's death.

Barbara Nadel will impress fans of Andrea Camilleri and Jason Goodwin. 'Riveting... Nadel takes us far beneath the surface of the city's ancient streets... A heady and stunningly exciting take on the crime genre' - Lancashire Evening Post When Emine Aksu, the flamboyant wife of an Istanbul style guru, suddenly goes missing, Inspector Cetin Ikmen's investigation leads him deep into her strange and colourful past. Emine was a hippie when she was younger, who wholeheartedly enjoyed the liberated lifestyle that swept across the city when the western Europeans flooded into Istanbul in the sixties. According to her husband, Emine never really left behind the free love pleasures she discovered back then and he suspects she was visiting an old friend at the time of her disappearance. Meanwhile, Inspector Mehmet Suleyman is called to a terrifying scene at the art deco Kamondo Stairs in the old banking district of Karakoy. The skeleton of a woman has been discovered in one of the large plant containers. Could these two bizarre incidents be linked? What readers are saying about Pretty Dead Things: 'A well planned novel with a mixture of the politics and social history of Istanbul as a background to a thrilling mystery starring Inspector Ikmen' 'The plot is one of her [Barbara Nadel's] best and her characters [...] have become fully fleshed individuals by this point in the series'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People at certain points of life all over ask questions of wonder—who, how, when, why, or what? There have been thousands of questions from billions of people on or of life, from individual questions to the world to the universe. Some have been solved, while others continually seek out answers. We as a whole intuitively ask more all the time. We all enter the same way, just in different places and times. It proves we’re all connected in some sort of way whether we meet or not. Our existence shows we are here to experience the different highs and lows in between. How that’s executed or accomplished is different for everyone. One needs others to assist us in achieving it or them. We do the same for others in return. We may or may not enjoy the lesson that comes from it. We may not even understand any of it. We may not see value in it, but later we do. Experiences may prove different what we may have learned or believed on the paths we chose. We can be humbled, and we can also do great things. The definition of success is different for each. The definition of right and wrong is the same. We’re all energy. We absorb the energy around us if we allow it to with the influences that create it. These can be fantastic and paralyzing at the same time depending on the many factors that allow it manifest. They are created by beliefs, emotions, and experiences. Whatever allows us to exist is seen as different for anyone. It allows us to make and learn from mistakes if we choose to. It allows us to create our own fate, destiny, and lives with the limited and unlimited resources we are given. The definition of life and success in it is different for anyone you ask. The reality in how one sees and values it is different too. Jack Connor is no different than anyone else. At least he did. Through his experiences he’s had, finding the difficult lessons in it has blessed him with a new outlook toward it. Many things happened that he had no control over. Some experiences could’ve been avoided all together, but Jack chose not to let that happen. He made mistakes and then more. He lived in denial based on fear. Things had to happen for the possibility of change. Some made sense while others didn’t. His actions effected far more than he knew. The lessons learned and the highs and lows of it still continue because of it the decisions he chooses to see life in. Finding hope when there was none, being humbled and rising back. Miracles happening. Finding a new way to live allowed him being placed where he was needed at the right time. It’s something he never expected. There was no guarantee either. But neither was he. What happened to him has happened to others before and will happen to others again. If you allow it to. For whatever reason, one change lead to another which allowed for him to see the perception of how his life was and the place he was placed in for a moment of time. The results of this may never be known fully or until time allows it to. It may take a lifetime or more? And like everything else, the only question he has is what’s next? And why, how, who and when?

What you may not realize is that these fears are almost never based on reality. When you’re anxious, you’re actually fooling yourself, telling yourself things that simply aren’t true. I think this plane is going to crash!” Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.” Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!” Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.” Using techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which focuses on practical, solution-based methods for understanding and overcoming negative thoughts and emotions, When Panic Attacks gives you the ammunition to quickly defeat every conceivable kind of anxiety, such as chronic worrying, shyness, public speaking anxiety, test anxiety, and phobias, without lengthy therapy or prescription drugs.
