Book excerpt: In a time of desperation, I prayed believing for one idea to change my life, and He gave me the words and the images for the most precious cast of characters aimed at touching the world with their southern grace. The stories were pouring out of my heart. A heart that was physically failing and certainly had been broken, and as their stories healed me, my story would ultimately heal others. They are the Sweeteas, and they have, indeed, changed my life! My story is surely one that claims joy comes from suffering. A story many need to embrace in the times in which we live. However, far greater than the Sweeteas was this intimate love relationship that I found in Christ through this journey. Through some very painful lessons and needing him more than breath, I found that his greatest desire for us is to know Him and love Him. Caught up in busyness and service, I missed his greatest gift of all, His presence and His love. A love He says transcends all understanding. I believe that it is by no accident that we have this longing to be loved wholly and unconditionally and even deeply. I imagine Him placing a piece of His heart in the depths of ours, so we would always long for Him, and upon reuniting, we find the love for which our heart was designed. It is the greatest love story of all. He comes in on the white horse, He draws you close to His heart, and His presence fills you with all-consuming love. My story is He Gave Me Pearls, and I pray these pearls will set you free!

Book excerpt: This book presents a bold, multifaceted interpretation of early English imperial actions by examining the ways in which English empire-builders and travelers interacted with Indigenous and African peoples during the long process of colonization in the Americas. Ignacio Gallup-Díaz argues that early English imperial actors were primarily motivated by practical concerns rather than abstract ideologies—from reacting to, learning from, and avoiding the ongoing Spanish and Portuguese imperial projects to the dynamic collision of English imaginings of empire with the practical realities of governing non-European peoples. The text includes an appendix of primary sources that allows students and instructors to engage with English imperial thinking directly. Readers are encouraged to critically examine English accounts of this period in an attempt to see the Indigenous and African peoples who are embedded in them. European Expansion and Representations of Indigenous and African Peoples provides an invaluable new framework for undergraduate students and instructors of early American history, Atlantic history, and the history of race and imperialism more broadly.

Book excerpt: Storytelling is a precious, vibrant tradition among the Native peoples of the Far North. Collected here for the first time are stories from the communities of interior Alaska and the Yukon Territory. These are the tales the people tell about themselves, their communities, and the world they inhabit. øOur Voices showcases twenty storytellers and writers who represent a full range of Athabaskan and related languages of Alaska and the Yukon. Both men and women recount popular tales of ancient times that describe the origins of social institutions and cultural values, as well as meaningful, sometimes intimate stories about their own lives and families or the history of their people. As representatives of an art transmitted through countless generations and now practiced with renewed interest and vigor by people reclaiming their cultural heritage, these narratives create a broad, brightly colored, richly detailed picture of the world of the Far North, present and past.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Alice Hoffman tears a page from history and melds it with mysticism to create a spellbinding, highly acclaimed tale about the persecution of Jewish people during the sixteenth century. Estrella is a Marrano: During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, she is one of a community of Spanish Jews living double lives as Catholics. And she is living in a house of secrets, raised by a family who practices underground the ancient and mysterious way of wisdom known as kabbalah. When Estrella discovers her family's true identity--and her family's secrets are made public--she confronts a world she's never imagined, where new love burns and where friendship ends in flame and ash, where trust is all but vanquished and betrayal has tragic and bitter consequences. Winner of numerous "best book" citations and infused with the rich context of history and faith, Incantation is a transcendent journey of discovery and loss, rebirth and remembrance that Newbery Award-winning author Lois Lowry described as "Magical and spellbinding...Painful and exquisitely beautiful."

Book excerpt: Nine Lives is the true story of a simple woman plagued by her twenty-year addiction to drugs and alcohol. Rather than succumb to the miseries of an abusive home or to the addiction that began at only twelve years old, Gina continues to fight for the freedom of a normal life with the help of her very own Guardian Angel. Sometimes she loses her battles, but she finally wins her war because of her unfailing belief in God and her belief that God believes in her, no matter what. A story that exposes the perils of addiction and the power of God to overcome that addiction, Nine Lives shows the love of God for all his creatures and the manifestation of that love in man himself. The book also tells the story of the three men in Gina's life who love her, but who she feels she must reject in order to protect them from her crippled state. Finally, though, Gina learns to accept the unconditional love of the man who is now her husband, a man whose love mirrors the love she feels from and toward God.

One of the great treasures of the British Library, the fourteenth-century poem Pearl is a work of poetic brilliance; its account of loss and consolation has retained its force across six centuries. Jane Draycott in her new translation remakes the imaginative intensity of the original. This is, Bernard O'Donoghue says in his introduction, 'an event of great significance and excitement', an encounter between medieval tradition and an acclaimed modern poet.
