Book Synopsis Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition by : Roland N. Pittman
Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation, Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Synopsis The Delft Sand, Clay and Rock Cutting Model by : S.A. Miedema
Download or read book The Delft Sand, Clay and Rock Cutting Model written by S.A. Miedema and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand, clay and rock have to be excavated for a variety of purposes, such as dredging, trenching, mining (including deep sea mining), drilling, tunnel boring and many other applications. Many excavations take place on dry land, but they are also frequently required in completely saturated conditions, and the methods necessary to accomplish them consequently vary widely. This book provides an overview of cutting theories. It begins with a generic model, valid for all types of soil (sand, clay and rock), and continues with the specifics of dry sand, water-saturated sand, clay, atmospheric rock and hyperbaric rock. Small blade angles and large blade angles are discussed for each soil type, and for each case considered the equations/model for cutting forces, power and specific energy are given. With models verified by laboratory research, principally from the Delft University of Technology, and data from other recognized sources, this book will prove an invaluable reference for anybody whose work involves major excavations of any kind.
Book Synopsis Primary Maternal and Neonatal Health by : Fe Del Mundo
Download or read book Primary Maternal and Neonatal Health written by Fe Del Mundo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First International Congress on Maternal and Neonatal Health (IAMANEH) chose as its theme Primary Maternal and Neonatal Health Care: A Global Concern. If the primary goal of all World Health Organization member states of "Health For All By The Year 2000" is to be met, the most difficult challenge lies in the area of maternal and neonatal health care. Indeed, the preventable mortal ity of mothers and their newborns related to the quality of maternity care extracts a greater toll in life expect ancy than any specific disease category. Such mortality is but the tip of an iceberg of morbidity that saps the quality of life of a majority of this world's citizens. They are the less privileged by accident of birth only. An intolerable situation exists. These Proceedings reflect a world concern by m~n~s ters of health, academicians, scientists and providers of maternal and neonatal care. No blueprint is offered for solution of this world's greatest health problem. But the Proceedings do contain an accurate description of the problem and revealing epidemiological diagnoses that both lay bare deficiencies in care and suggest the way to im prove "health for all". The implications of these papers will not bring comfort to those responsible for the allocation of scarce resources for health. They rather suggest radical changes are needed and that failure to make these changes could mean a catastrophic and meaning less loss of life during the balance of this century.
