Book Synopsis Haydn by : Howard Chandler Robbins Landon
Download or read book Haydn written by Howard Chandler Robbins Landon and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1995-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author treats the life and work of the composer in its chronological context, with detailed discussion, illustrated with musical examples, of the major works. The Chronicle is based principally on contemporary newspaper accounts, diaries and correspondence. In both its scale and complexity it is Haydn's greatest masterpiece - The Creation - which provides the major point of interest. The development of the work is traced from the libretto sketch by Baron Gottfried van Swieten which Haydn brought back from London, through the various stages of drafting (many of Haydn's preparatory sketches for the introduction - 'Chaos' - and various numbers in the Oratorio are reproduced as musical examples) to completion and first performance. Its subsequent publication, in 1800, and circulation to subscribers all over Europe was supervised by Haydn himself, and his list of the original subscribers is included as an appendix to the main discussion of the work which was to prove the crowning achievement of the composer's career up to the turn of the century.

Book Synopsis Haydn: The Creation by : Nicholas Temperley
Download or read book Haydn: The Creation written by Nicholas Temperley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-05-31 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haydn's Creation is one of the great masterpieces of the classical period. In this absorbing and original account the author places the work within the oratorio tradition, contrasting the theological and literary character of the English libretto with the Viennese milieu of the first performances. The complete text is provided in both English and German versions as a reference point for discussion of the design of the work and the musical treatment of the words. A more detailed musical chapter examines the work through the movement types it employs - arias and ensembles, recitative and choruses - distinguishing the Handelian model from Haydn's own classical idiom. Nicholas Temperley also discusses the changing performance traditions of this work, surveys the critical reception throughout its history and quotes from the most signifcant critical literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Book Synopsis Symbolic Landscapes by : Gary Backhaus
Download or read book Symbolic Landscapes written by Gary Backhaus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symbolic Landscapes presents a definitive collection of landscape/place studies that explores symbolic, cultural levels of geographical meanings. Essays written by philosophers, geographers, architects, social scientists, art historians, and literati, bring specific modes of expertise and perspectives to this transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary study of the symbolic level human existential spatiality. Placing emphasis on the pre-cognitive genesis of symbolic meaning, as well as embodied, experiential (lived) geography, the volume offers a fresh, quasi-phenomenological approach. The editors articulate the epistemological doctrine that perception and imagination form a continuum in which both are always implicated as complements. This approach makes a case for the interrelation of the geography of perception and the geography of imagination, which means that human/cultural geography offers only an abstraction if indeed an aesthetic geography is constituted merely as a sub-field. Human/cultural geography can only approach spatial reality through recognizing the intimate interrelative dialectic between the imaginative and perceptual meanings of our landscapes/place-worlds. This volume reinvigorates the importance of the topic of symbolism in human/cultural geography, landscape studies, philosophy of place, architecture and planning, and will stand among the classics in the field.
