Book excerpt: Spanish conquistadors attempted to conquer the New World nearly a century before the English colonists established a permanent settlement at Jamestown. This book examines the unsuccessful elements of Spain's attempt at expanding its empire in the Americas, focusing particularly on the misadventures of three conquistadors. Part One tells the story of Cabeza de Vaca who, along with three other survivors of the ill-fated Panfilo de Narvaez expedition to Florida, spent nearly eight years among the various tribes that wandered across Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico before finding his way back to civilization. Their tales of lands rich with earthly delights served as inspiration for two epic but failed expeditions that make up the second and third parts of the book: Francisco de Coronado's quest to find the golden cities of Cibola and Hernando de Soto's efforts to find the rich kingdoms of Florida.

Download or read book Cycles of Conquest written by Edward H. Spicer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2015-09-19 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than fifty years, Cycles of Conquest is still one of the best syntheses of more than four centuries of conquest, colonization, and resistance ever published. It explores how ten major Native groups in northern Mexico and what is now the United States responded to political incorporation, linguistic hegemony, community reorganization, religious conversion, and economic integration. Thomas E. Sheridan writes in the new foreword commissioned for this special edition that the book is “monumental in scope and magisterial in presentation.” Cycles of Conquest remains a seminal work, deeply influencing how we have come to view the greater Southwest and its peoples.

Two men desperately want to keep the discovery a secret – Caleb, the old miner who found the treasure, and Henry who has spent the past several years hunting for it. Unfortunately for Caleb, Henry has no qualms about using whatever means necessary to take what he wants, even if it means murder and kidnapping. Regrettably for Belle, she eventually gets in the way. With the help of two Chiricahua machinists, Mason sets out to stop Henry’s escape and rescue Belle. But everyone has failed to take into consideration two dead conquistadors who are not quite ready to part with the gold.

Book Synopsis North American Exploration by : John Logan Allen
Download or read book North American Exploration written by John Logan Allen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three volumes that will encompass North American Exploration appraise the full scope of the exploration of the North American continent and its oceanic margins from prior to the arrival of Columbus until the end of the nineteenth century. More than an assessment of historical events, these volumes portray the process of exploration. Without forgetting the romance of exploration, the authors recognize that exploration is a great deal more than the adventures themselves. All explorers are conditioned by the time, place, and circumstances of their efforts; these determine objectives, the behavior of explorers, and the consequences of their discoveries. In this first volume we follow the expansion of knowledge from the world of the pre-Columbian explorers through the end of the sixteenth century, with each topic addressed by an expert, and all fitting into a coherent whole. The volume is enhanced by a discussion of the geographical knowledge and beliefs of the native peoples of the North American continent, and how this knowledge influenced the efforts and understanding of the Europeans.

The lands were purchased from the French and included portions of fourteen current U.S. states and two Canadian Provinces. These lands were under French control from 1682 - 1763 and from 1803 1804; the area was named in honor of King Louis 14th. A Spanish expedition, in 1540 by Francisco Vasquez Coronado was formed in an attempt to find the ancient Seven Golden Cities of Ci. The rumor began with Cabeza de Vacas visit to what is now southern New Mexico. It is rumored that seven priest fled the city of Merida, Spain taking vast amounts of gold and other treasures to a far away land later to be called the Americas. Coronado, however, was, unsuccessful and returned home. Another expedition led by Juan de Onate Salazar in 1598 explored north of the Rio Grande and claimed most of modern day New Mexico for Spain. Santa Fe became the capital city of the territory and remains the capital of the state.
