Book excerpt: St Albans is a city steeped in history, a place of former martyrs, Roman legions, battles, bloodshed ... and ghosts. Here the paranormal history of this remarkable area is brought vividly to life in the first dedicated guide to its unique haunted heritage that presents true encounters with the world of the strange and the unseen. Paranormal historian Paul Adams opens case files both ancient and modern to compile a chilling collection of supernatural experiences – the much haunted St Albans Cathedral where phantom monks have been seen in daylight and the fighting ghosts of Battlefield House and the legless apparition of a long-dead butler are just some of the unnerving experiences that await the reader.

Book excerpt: “A genuine attempt by someone who is a trained clinical therapist and parapsychologist to scientifically evaluate reported experiences of the paranormal.” —Magonia Review You’ve just laid down for the night when suddenly doors slam and the curtains shift. The lights begin to flicker and a white mist forms in front of you. You shut your eyes and keep muttering, “ghosts aren’t real.” But then you open your eyes and realize that “harmless” mist has shifted into the form of a man, staring intensely at you, as he floats above your bed. What causes ghostly experiences? Are ghosts real? Why do certain people report numerous ghostly encounters and others none? For centuries these questions have intrigued, puzzled, and bedeviled science, skeptics, and even believers. Based on cutting-edge research and new theories, The Ghost Studies provides insight into some of life’s greatest mysteries. This fascinating book is far more than a compilation of ghost stories. The Ghost Studies provides scientific explanations for paranormal occurrences, including: New and exciting scientific theories that explain apparitions, hauntings, and communications from the dead. The latest research on the role of energy and electricity in hauntings. The role that emotions, bioenergetics, and the environment play in supernatural phenomena. New research into why some individuals are more prone to ghostly encounters. “I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of the paranormal . . . This book is well written and opens the doors for countless areas of study and discussion and it is one that you will find yourself going back to again and again.” —Association of Paranormal Study

A tragic event can remain and attach itself to material things such as clothing, dolls, furniture, paintings, jewelry and even houses. It then can transfer its dark energy on to you, altering your personality making you feel out of control and even destroy your life. Compiled here are the true case files documenting, real evidence of haunted attachments and how it effects its owners or should I say its victims. If you play with paranormal fire you're going to get 'burnt'. This book and documentary is very personal to me as I went through the most difficult time in my life filming our latest documentary The Attached. This was the first time I picked up an attachment during an investigation at St. Albans Sanatorium. I was attacked in Isolation Cell 7. St. Albans has over 14 Isolation Cells that you can visit if you dare.Something at St. Albans attached to my back and I remember spinning around like a chicken with its head cut off. It was heavy, like human baggage taking a stronghold on my frame. I remember screaming "Get off me, Get off me." After eventually it subsiding. I felt lighter as it calmed down enough to be able to leave. Within six months after I almost died. Leaving out the gory-building details, getting straight to the point, I was checked into the hospital with some form of thing residing inside the middle of me. It was ruled out as a tumor yet they found a large unknown entity living inside of me. It was successfully removed but that entity remains at Harvards Medical University in a specimen jar as it had stem cells and teeth. Was this some form of an attachment or just a coincidence, you decide as you read on....BTW: Isolation Cell 7 is where patient Rebecca was kept..

Book excerpt: A real ghost story should never end perfectly. That is my rule of thumb. After investigating ghost experiences for nearly thirty years, I realised that the finely polished stories told by storytellers and "ghost walkers" were exactly that - polished. In polishing stories we lose the personality of the haunted and indeed the haunter itself, that is why in my books, research papers and articles, I always maintain the original testaments and facts. The stories that I have collected for you now are rough diamonds, totally unpolished and any additions by myself are kept to a minimum and noted clearly." P. [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: This unique reference book and guide to the ghost population of the British Isles covers a subject that fascinates and, at the same time, terrifies mankind. The ghosts of Britain are numerous. Here for the first time, catalogued and placed in alphabetical order, are well over two-hundred accounts of ghostly happenings - ranging from the legendary to the factually presented and the scientifically investigated. Included are details not only of such famous haunted houses as Borley and Bettiscombe, Hampton Court and Hinton Ampner, Glamis and Great Bealings, but also lesser known hauntings such as those associated with Woburn, the Gargoyle Theatre in Soho, St. Albans and Bury St. Edmunds. The author has also assembled a wealth of new material pertaining to such hauntings as those at Sandringham, Thames Ditton, Penzance, Greenwich and Grantchester. Every entry ends with a nearby recommended hotel. Gazetteer of British Ghosts represents the results of a quarter of a century of study and on the spot investigation by one of the leading authorities on haunted houses alive today. A full bibliography details all the best books dealing with true ghostly experiences, selected from the author’s library which is considered to be the most extensive private collection of such books.

Hospitals are the nexus point between life and death, the place into which people enter this world, but also exit it. When we consider what has taken place behind the closed doors of hospitals since the inception of the medical profession, it should come as no surprise to discover that so many of them are haunted. In The World's Most Haunted Hospitals, paramedic and paranormal investigator Richard Estep recounts some of the most fascinating—and chilling—stories of hospital hauntings from across the globe, including: The apparitions at an old Utah hospital, now a nursing home, whose appearances are said to predict a patient's death. The Italian island referred to by locals as "the gateway to Hell," where the spirits of thousands of plague victims prowl the streets. The terrifying phenomena that keep visitors away from an abandoned airbase hospital in the Philippines. The ghostly nurse who has haunted the corridors of a London hospital for generations.

Book excerpt: “A stunning and intelligent debut novel; powerful, intense and raw . . . an insightful psychological portrait of a man on the edge.” —NB Magazine December 1959: A furious anticolonial war rages in Algeria. Captain Jacques le Garrec, a former detective and French Resistance hero, returns to France in disgrace. Traumatized after two years of working in the army intelligence services, he’s now accused of a brutal crime. As le Garrec awaits trial in the tiny Breton town where he grew up, he is asked to look into a disturbing and unsolved murder committed the previous winter. A local teenage girl was killed and her bizarrely mutilated body was left displayed on the heathland in a way that no one could understand. Le Garrec’s investigations draw him into the dark past of the town, still haunted by memories of the German occupation. As he tries to reconstruct the events of the murder, the violence of this crime and his recollections of Algeria intertwine, threatening to submerge him. “[A] provocative and unsettling first novel . . . a remarkably assured debut by a gifted new writer.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Take a bit of Albert Camus, mix in some Nobel Prize-winning Patrick Modiano, add a dollop of French noir, and voilà, you have James Brydon’s The Moment Before Drowning.” —Denise Hamilton, bestselling author of Damage Control “An exploration of political oppression wrapped in a carefully constructed mystery. In Brydon’s auspicious debut . . . the characters are alive and the mystery is mostly satisfying. An erudite and entertaining addition to the shelf.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: A journey along one of Britain's oldest roads, from Dover to Anglesey, in search of the hidden history that makes us who we are today. Long ago a path was created by the passage of feet tramping through endless forests. Gradually that path became a track, and the track became a road. It connected the White Cliffs of Dover to the Druid groves of the Welsh island of Anglesey, across a land that was first called Albion then Britain, Mercia and eventually England and Wales. Armies from Rome arrived and straightened this 444 kilometres of meandering track, which in the Dark Ages gained the name Watling Street. Today, this ancient road goes by many different names: the A2, the A5 and the M6 Toll. It is a palimpsest that is always being rewritten. Watling Street is a road of witches and ghosts, of queens and highwaymen, of history and myth, of Chaucer, Dickens and James Bond. Along this route Boudicca met her end, the Battle of Bosworth changed royal history, Bletchley Park code breakers cracked Nazi transmissions and Capability Brown remodelled the English landscape. The myriad people who use this road every day might think it unremarkable, but, as John Higgs shows, it hides its secrets in plain sight. Watling Street is not just the story of a route across our island, but an acutely observed, unexpected exploration of Britain and who we are today, told with wit and flair, and an unerring eye for the curious and surprising.
