Book excerpt: "Borley Rectory was the house that gained infamy as "the most haunted house in England" after its ten-year-long paranormal investigation by the psychic researcher; Harry Price. Price dedicated his life to uncovering the truth behind the paranormal, leading him to become one of the most well-known psychical researchers of all time. It was his investigation into Borley Rectory which by far became the most famous case in Price's long career, eventually leading to the Victorian house being crowned the 'most haunted in England'. This book ... document[s] his ten-year investigation into exploring the nature of paranormal phenomena surrounding Borley Rectory. The rectory was attributed to classic poltergeist activity, wall-writing, mysterious fires and supernatural manifestations. Most notable of these is that of the figure of a nun, known for walking across the garden. Also appearing was a spectral carriage and team of horses driven by a headless coachman. It could be said that the story of Borley Rectory is as much a story of a haunted house and ghosts as it is about the living. Borley's saga includes sensationalist tabloid headlines, a scandalous affair and a captivating investigator whose discoveries are still questioned to this day"--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: Haunted Selves, Haunting Places in English Literature and Culture offers a series of readings of poetry, the novel and other forms of art and cultural expression, to explore the relationship between subject and landscape, self and place. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach grounded in close reading, the text places Jacques Derrida’s work on spectrality in dialogue with particular aspects of phenomenology. The volume explores writing and culture from the 1880s to the present day, proceeding through four sections examining related questions of identity, memory, the landscape, and our modern relationship to the past. Julian Wolfreys presents a theoretically informed understanding of the efficacy of literature and culture in connecting us to the past in an affective and engaged manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borley Rectory in Essex, built in 1862, should have been an ordinary Victorian clergyman's house. However, just a year after its construction, unexplained footsteps were heard within the house, and from 1900 until it burned down in 1939 numerous paranormal phenomena, including phantom coaches and shattering windows, were observed. In 1929 the house was investigated by the Daily Mail and paranormal researcher Harry Price, and it was he who called it 'the most haunted house in England.' Price also took out a lease of the rectory from 1937 to 1938, recruiting forty-eight 'official observers' to monitor occurences. After his death in 1948, the water was muddied by claims that Price's findings were not genuine paranormal activity, and ever since there has been a debate over what really went on at Borley Rectory. Paul Adams, Eddie Brazil and Peter Underwood here present a comprehensive guide to the history of the house and the ghostly (or not) goings-on there.

Have you heard your name being called out by a loved one that isn't home? Witnessed doors that mysteriously open and close on their own? What about footsteps approaching, only to turn and find emptiness echoing aloud? Every year, thousands tell the stories of their personal accounts of ghostly hauntings. Are they just that: stories? Or is there something else, lurking outside the boundaries of what we call reality. From the famous Amityville house to the tragic case of Murder Ridge, do the murders that took place there tell the whole story? Or do the dead hang on, struggling to share their voice with the willing and the ones that seek to learn? Take my hand and come with me into a world where the dead themselves speak to the tragedy of a life lost to time. The evidence is all here within the pages of this book. It's up to you to decide if you choose to believe.
