Book excerpt: A short, but delightful Halloween poem book. All ages will surely enjoy these scary atmospheric poems and the spooky artwork throughout. From a haunting encounter with a ghostly visage in 'Old Woman' to enchanting childhood recollections in 'Autumn Memories', this charming and eerie collection of poems that celebrates the Halloween season will become a perennial favorite for this other festive time of year. From The Introduction: The fall season has always been a special time of year for me. I carry wonderful memories of Halloween from my childhood in Ohio and of my mother relating the most amazing ghost stories to our family. Our house would be decorated for the season and she would begin her story-telling which truly brought out the magic for me and my siblings. I have to give her full credit for my love of this glorious time of year. As the years went by I never lost my passion for the fall season and Halloween. If anything, my appreciation of it increased over the years. I would always find as much time as possible, starting in late September, to begin enjoying the fall season as it made its way towards Halloween. In the late 80's I started collecting some of the books that meant so much to me as a child. Helen Hokes' "Witches, Witches, Witches" and "Spooks, Spooks, Spooks" as well as Wilhelmina Harper's "Ghosts and Goblins". These books left an indelible impression on me and I would check them out from the local library every Halloween when I was a kid. It was a tradition that I never forgot! Even though they have been out of print for years, I think you can still find them on eBay now and again. Years passed and I felt I the need to write my own Halloween book. I began writing Halloween poems in the late nineties and would share them with family members at our annual Halloween parties. It seemed I had a natural affinity for this form of poetry and would find that the work would flow easily, especially during the fall season. After several years I had enough to start assembling this book but I didn't want to publish it until I had illustrations to accompany the poems. I felt I needed to do my own art and illustrations for this book. I loved those old Halloween books from my childhood that had great poems and stories with amazing illustrations. I would gaze at those old etchings and ink drawings over and over again as I read the poems and stories. The combination had an enchanting effect on me and added to all the Halloween magic in my life. I admired the simple black and white images because they were spookier and more powerful as Halloween illustrations. Maybe the publishers found it was much cheaper and a less risky venture to publish this way. whatever was the motivation for the mono color illustrations, I'm glad for their decision. And this was the direction I wanted to go with my little book. But as often happens, years went by and finding time to work on completing this project was hard to come by, but it was always in the back of my mind. So luckily in 2013 a space opened up in my schedule and I was able to carefully create the artwork and put the book together. My aim with these poems was to create an old-fashioned, eerie feeling for the reader. Some do, and others have a more contemporary flair still in keeping with this magical time of year. This book isn't just for children, but for anyone who has a true love of Halloween and the wonderful changes this season brings. I wanted to write a book with poems similar to the ones that meant so much to me when I was a boy, a mix of poetry reminiscent of my childhood favorites along with those that would appeal to devotees of all ages. I hope you're as happy with the result as I am. Enjoy and Happy Halloween! Richard Anderson 2013

As she prepares for the wedding, she designs the perfect wedding gown. This is what will happen in the novel. As with the book of poems, it was a combination of events that had happened in the imagination of my mind. The book of poems has inspired me to continue to write and create my thoughts on how I will like my audience to see my work. The time that I have put into this book has not been an overnight experience. It has been a long road and some writer’s block, but it has been rewarding. When I first started writing, I never imagined that I will someday become an author. I had many sleepless nights, but writing this book of poems has given me the joy of being able to express my feelings and share them with the world. All kinds of poems and novels were created. By the way, I decided to prove that poems do not necessarily have to have rhythm but that it can be expressed with understanding. If you know what you want and how you want to inspire yourself, then it will inspire others to want that encouragement. I work so hard to put my words into something that others can relate to. This book has inspired me to continue to write more and more. I hope that by the time my audience read this, it will help them pursue their dreams. When I received the news about my manuscript, I thanked God for bringing me this far and never leaving me. I also thank my husband for encouraging me to finish. Thank you, Ricky, for the moral support. I hope you all enjoy this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghost stories have played a prominent role in childhood. Circulated around playgrounds and whispered in slumber parties, their history in American literature is little known and seldom discussed by scholars. This book explores the fascinating origins and development of these tales, focusing on the social and historical factors that shaped them and gave birth to the genre. Ghost stories have existed for centuries but have been published specifically for children for only about 200 years. Early on, supernatural ghost stories were rare--authors and publishers, fearing they might adversely affect young minds, presented stories in which the ghost was always revealed as a fraud. These tales dominated children's publishing in the 19th century but the 20th century saw a change in perspective and the supernatural ghost story flourished.

Book excerpt: Secular Lyric interrogates the distinctively individual ways that Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson transformed classical, romantic, and early modern forms of lyric expression to address the developing conditions of Western modernity, especially the heterogeneity of believers and beliefs in an increasingly secular society. Analyzing historically and formally how these poets inscribed the pressures of the modern crowd in the text of their poems, John Michael shows how the masses appear in these poets’ work as potential readers to be courted and resisted, often at the same time. Unlike their more conventional contemporaries, Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson resist advising, sermonizing or consoling their audiences. They resist most familiar senses of meaning as well. For them, the processes of signification in print rather than the communication of truths become central to poetry, which in turn becomes a characteristic of modern verse in the Western world. Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson, in idiosyncratic but related ways, each disrupt conventional expectations while foregrounding language’s material density, thereby revealing both the potential and the limitations of art in the modern age.
