Book Synopsis The Truth of the Matter by : Gough Whitlam
Download or read book The Truth of the Matter written by Gough Whitlam and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Remembrance Day, 1975, the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, sacked the Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. The Dismissal was the culmination of almost three years of political conflict, as Whitlam's reforming Labor government rammed home overdue legislative reforms in the face of implacable, and increasingly bitter, conservative opposition. The focus of the Opposition's scheming was the Senate, where its leaders blocked supply in order to force a political crisis. Whitlam, famous for his 'crash through or crash' style, refused to compromise with his political enemies. After consulting secretly with the Opposition Leader, Malcolm Fraser, and the Chief Justice, Sir Garfield Barwick, Kerr abruptly informed the PM that he had withdrawn his commission. Half an hour later, Kerr swore Fraser in as 'caretaker Prime Minister'. At an election a month later, the conservatives were returned to office. Controversy and recrimination followed. Many Australians, including Whitlam himself, believed he had been the victim of a coup. In 1979, he published his own account of the events of 1975, The Truth of the Matter, an instant best seller. Out of print for many years, it is republished by MUP on the thirtieth anniversary of the Dismissal, with a new introduction by the author and other new reference material. Passionate, pithy, learned, witty, and vigorously combative, The Truth of the Matter tells the extraordinary political story of the only Prime Minister of Australia ever deposed from office.

Structured around the four seasons of the year, each chapter is full of step-by-step games and activities that harmonize with the weather and seasonal nature patterns, including nods to seasonal festivals such as Easter and Christmas. Activities include: Spring: Nettle Soup; Wood-cookie-Man; Earth Day Birthday Cake; Dandelion and Lime Tea Summer: Bark Masks; Blackberry Ink and Feather Quill Pens; Nature Watch; Animal Tag Autumn: Evergreen Paintbrush; Baked Apples; Den Building; Leaf Stitching Winter: Elf Carving; Compass Treasure Hunt; Charcoal Pencils; Animal Track Casts At Forest School, children return to the same location again and again, building a lasting connection with a specific part of the natural world. Each of the four seasonal chapters in A Year of Forest School includes a description of an extended session (combining active and quieter activities, plus an idea for foraging/cooking), capturing this key part of Forest School play and providing inspiration for parties, themed learning days, and outdoor adventures.

Book excerpt: My Poetic Anthology by John Haughton John studied Philosophy and Theology at the Redemptorist College, (CSSR.) Cluain Mhuire, Galway, Ireland, majored in Sociology and Town Planning at University College Dublin followed by a practical Horticultural course at the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin. 'Deep Ecology' now underpins his thought processes, work and philosophy. John co-founded Forest Friends Ireland presents his own environmental radio programme, 'ENVIRO', on local Dublin Community Radio station, NEAR 90.3 FM, www.nearfm.ie. John maintains that to be creative is the most important thing in life and that earth connectedness though a primordial instinct needs nevertheless to be rediscovered and reaffirmed on a daily basis. John's poems are environmental in nature, with deep ecological undertones. He agrees with writer Baron Wormser who said that "Poetry is a spirit gift we give to people". John is author of the 'Silver Lining' which is the story of the Irish pioneering Aviatrix lady Heath and the birth of Irish aviation in the 1930s. He is editor of two anthologies of poetry written by pupils of Ballyfermot Primary Schools in Dublin, entitled 'The Forest of Children Dreaming'. Some of John's poems are included in anthologies of the Bayside Writers 'Migrating Minds' series, and in 'Trinity Collage' a publication of the 'Trinity Writers group'. He was joint editor of the Cáirde Na Coille poetry anthology, 'Seeing the Wood and the Trees'. His extended poem 'Beslan-Not Forgotten' is now available to purchase.
