Book excerpt: ‘I’m not saying the internet made me kill, but it certainly helped.’ Is there someone online who really grates on you? That friend who’s always bragging about their awesome life and endlessly sharing tired memes, and who just doesn’t get jokes? Look at your Twitter feed: don’t you get cross at the endless rage, the thoughtless bigotry and the pleading for celebrity retweets? Meet Dave, a street fundraiser and fan of cat pictures. He’s decided that unfollowing just isn’t enough. He’s determined to make the internet a nicer place, whatever it takes. When he killed his best friend’s girlfriend, he wasn’t planning on changing the world. She was just really annoying on Facebook. But someone saw, and made him an offer. Someone who knows what he’s capable of, and wants to use him to take control of the darkness at the heart of the internet. And now the bodies – the comment trolls, the sexual predators, the obnoxious pop stars – are starting to mount up... ‘James Goss is dangerous. His work makes you laugh one moment then, just as he’s weakened your defenses, he attacks with a killing blow.’Guy Adams, author of The Clown Service

Download or read book Belieber! written by Cathleen Falsani and published by Worthy Books. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justin Bieber's rise from "regular kid" to one of the most famous people on the planet has captivated a nation of devoted fans called "Beliebers." With hit records, 8 million followers on Twitter and the third-largest grossing documentary film of all time, the 17-year-old Canadian pop star dubbed "Super Boy" on Rolling Stone's recent cover has countless fans who hang on his every word. But is there more to this pop idol's startling success than his legendary haircut and unusual talent? "The success I've achieved comes ... from God," Bieber says "I feel I have an obligation to plant little seeds with my fans. I'm not going to tell them, 'You need Jesus,' but I will say at the end of my show, 'God loves you.'" The bold yet humble faith that grounds Bieber's worldview may just be the key to his extraordinary appeal. Recognizing that music and film are the language of this new generation, author and religion journalist Cathleen Falsani's hope is that this book will encourage faith leaders as well as parents to engage with popular culture in a different way so they can better talk to their kids about what matters most.
Book Synopsis Negotiating Difference in French Louisiana Music by : Sara Le Menestrel
Download or read book Negotiating Difference in French Louisiana Music written by Sara Le Menestrel and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sara Le Menestrel explores the role of music in constructing, asserting, erasing, and negotiating differences based on the notions of race, ethnicity, class, and region. She discusses established notions and brings to light social stereotypes and hierarchies at work in the evolving French Louisiana music field. She also draws attention to the interactions between oppositions such as black and white, urban and rural, differentiation and creolization, and local and global. Le Menestrel emphasizes the importance of desegregating the understanding of French Louisiana music and situating it beyond ethnic or racial identifications, amplifying instead the importance of regional identity. Musical genealogy and categories currently in use rely on a racial construct that frames African and European lineage as an essential difference. Yet as the author samples music in the field and discovers ways music is actually practiced, she reveals how the insistence on origins continually interacts with an emphasis on cultural mixing and creative agency. This book finds French Louisiana musicians navigating between multiple identifications, musical styles, and legacies while market forces, outsiders' interest, and geographical mobility also contribute to shape musicians' career strategies and artistic choices. The book also demonstrates the decisive role of non-natives' enthusiasm and mobility in the validation, evolution, and reconfiguration of French Louisiana music. Finally, the distinctiveness of South Louisiana from the rest of the country appears to be both nurtured and endured by locals, revealing how political domination and regionalism intertwine.

Book excerpt: Charade Parade By: Edwin D. Enoch We all are going the same places in life, we just take different roads to get there, and throughout our journeys many of us only get to do what we have to do instead of what we love—“marching to the beat,” so to speak. In this march who we are underneath is not who we display to the world, thus creating the “Charade Parade.” This collection of poetry expresses who Edwin Enoch is beyond the Charade Parade, and he wishes who his readers are beyond their daily charade will connect with who he is underneath and see that his experience may not be so different from their own and they will gain a sense of connectivity.

Book Synopsis Cursed Earth Asylum by : David Bishop
Download or read book Cursed Earth Asylum written by David Bishop and published by 2000 AD Books. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Judge Chung sobbed, bitter tears running down her face. 'He killed them, all of them,' she said. 'Who killed them?' McGruder demanded. 'Dredd.'" Twenty Years ago, the Justice Department built an asylum called Erebus to house the surviving atrocities from early experiments with cloning, eugenics and psi enhancement. The inmates were grotesque, disfigured beyond belief. One of them was evil beyond imagining. Two weeks ago, Judge Dredd led a Hotdog Run into the Cursed Earth; the only survivor returned to accuse him of murder. Now a group of Judges is sent to find him and bring him back - alive or dead. Is Dredd a traitor? Perhaps the answer lies in Erebus, where the inmates have taken over the asylum, and madness is no longer just a state of mind.
