States that hostility toward Jews existed in the ancient world long before Christianity, and its cause was Jewish religious and civic separatism. Contends that the New Testament contains no more recriminations against the Jews than the Bible; the former denies the chosenness of Jews, but it does not depict them as excessive sinners. The enmity toward Jews in the writings of early Christians (e.g. Chrysostom) is accounted for by their endeavors to separate Christianity from Judaism. In the medieval period, antisemitism was expressed by some clerics, but the Church never officially supported it. Luther may be blamed for antisemitism, but Protestantism did not advocate it. The Enlightenment was more hostile toward the Jews than was the Church. Antisemitism in 19th-20th-century Germany was mainly anti-Christian, and Hitler was as much anti-Christian as anti-Jewish. On the other hand, the Muslim roots of antisemitism (beside anti-Zionism) in the contemporary Arab world must not be ignored. Suggests that Christians must regard Jews as no different from other peoples, i.e. they are not immune to criticism. The Church has the right to try to evangelize the Jews, and these efforts must not be dismissed as antisemitism.
