To the boy this knowledge was as clear as 'a gooseberry (amalaka) kept on the palm (hasta)', and so the boy was named Hastamalaka, He became famous as one of the four renowned disciples of the Acharya and the conversation compiled by the Acharya is 'Hastamalaka stotram'. The famous saint of Maharashtra, Sant Ekanatha Maharaja has written a beautiful commentary on this stotra in Marathi. Book Synopsis Hastamalakiyam: A Fruit in the Hand or A Work by Hastamalaka by : Hastamalaka
Download or read book Hastamalakiyam: A Fruit in the Hand or A Work by Hastamalaka written by Hastamalaka and published by Society of Abidance in Truth. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young boy uttered a hymn to Adi Sankaracharya on how his identity of being the Self is as clear as a fruit in the hand in answer to the question who he is. As Self-Knowledge was as natural and evident to him as a fruit in one’s hand, he became famous under the name of “Hastamalaka.” “Hasta” means hand, and “amalaka” is a small fruit with properties of rejuvenation. Adi Sankaracharya wrote a commentary on these verses answering various doubts to make the experience of the Self self-evident to all. Sri Ramana Maharshi also translated the verses to Tamil with some nuances that further make the Self-Knowledge self-evident. Since these three works present the true nature of the Self so clearly, the English translation of the three works is being presented in this book. The book starts with the story of Hastamalaka and flows into the hymn of Hastamalaka. It consists of twelve verses that succinctly reveal the Knowledge of the Self, proclaiming the identity of this eternal Knowledge and the Being of the Self. The hymn is addressed to Vishnu, the all-pervasive, the sustainer of the manifest world. The Sanskrit, English transliteration, and English translation of the verses are presented in the book. Also included in the present volume are an English translation of the Tamil version of the text by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and an English translation of Hastamalakiya-Bhashyam, which is the Sanskrit commentary by Adi Sankara upon these verses by his disciple.

Any discussion of the Ultimate reality in the scriptures is merely indicative or descriptive. One such 'pointer' in the direction of the Absolute Truth- and an extremely effective one at that- is Sri Guru Nanak Devji's Mul Mantra(Ik Onkar), found in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Book excerpt: “Glimpses of Vedanta” is a collection of a few short articles on different aspects of Hindu philosophy. These articles refer mostly to ancient scriptures like Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and works of Sri Sankara. Considering the vastness and depth of Hindu philosophy, it is but natural that these short articles cannot explain such a complex subject in great details. The purpose of the book is to give the reader an exposure to certain fundamental concepts which are not usually presented in discourses. In all articles many references are provided in the hope that interested readers will pursue further study using these references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near and dear do bring some cheer in life, but costs dear, also bring a lot of fears and tears and will in time disappear. However, there is one and only one thing which is the nearest, the most beloved, the very source of happiness, which never leaves us and is completely free! It is the undotted 'I', my very own dearest Self. It is 'my own sweet home', the only one I truly own. Vedanta introduces this ever sweet Self to me and makes me truly Self-centred, and that is its beauty and fascination. Empowered by Self-knowledge Arjuna became victorious, Buddha became Enlightened and Swami Chinmayananda became loved and revered. Vedant Madhuryam - My Dearest Sweet Self is one more beautiful composition of Swami Tejomayananda, himself a Master exponent of Vedanta. The verses and the commentary give us a taste of the sweetness of Vedanta and compelling reasons why we should study it. Why wait for the twilight years of life, when you can be happy here and now.
