John Hays Gardiner was born at Gardiner, Maine, April 6, 1863, the son of Colonel John William Tudor Gardiner of the Class of 1836 and Ann Elizabeth (Hays) Gardiner, and the grandson of Robert Hallowell Gardiner of the Class of 1801. He was admitted to Harvard from J. P. Hopkinson's private school in July, 1881, and received his A. B. in 1885. The two following years he spent at the Harvard Law School, when health and strength failed him. Five years variously occupied in private tutoring and foreign travel, with frequent periods of complete rest at home, were necessary to restore him to an active life. In 1892 he began a connection with Harvard University that was to last almost continuously for twenty-one years. From September, 1892, until September, 1900, he was Instructor in English in Harvard College; and from September, 1900, to June, 1910, Assistant Professor of English; then, after a year devoted to writing, he entered the service of the Harvard Alumni Association to assume the editorship of the Harvard Alumni Bulletin, a position which he held at the time of his death in Boston on May 14, 1913. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of Harvard University: Descriptive and Historical Notes The first edition of these Notes appeared in 1903, as No. 55 of the Bibliographical Contributions of the Library of Harvard University. At that time the College Library, including the Special Libraries, contained 435,258 volumes, and the University Library comprised a total of 607,214 volumes. In the following eight years the College Library had increased to 625,494 volumes, a gain of forty-three per cent, and the University Library had grown to a total of 980,275 volumes, a gain of over sixty per cent. As much of this growth had been in the line of special collections, a new edition of the Notes was issued as Bibliographical Contribution, No. 60. In the preparation of this second edition the compiler had the able assistance of Mr. Edgar H. Wells, then secretary of the Library Council. In the four years since then the increase in the College Library has been 127,000 volumes and in the University Library 201,000 volumes, or about twenty per cent each. The College Library now contains over 753,000 volumes, and the University Library 1,181,500. The committee hopes that the circulation of this pamphlet may to some extent take the place of the celebration in focusing the attention of the alumni on the work of great law schools and their peculiar value, at periods like the present, in the history of popular government. If the alumni will read this account of the School and its development and reflect on the significance of the service of scattering through the country highly trained minds for the practical study of the multitude of problems of civil liberty under law, the unique opportunity offered by this anniversary, which is described in the preface, and to take advantage of which the celebration was planned, will not have been wholly lost.
