Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hartmann's Theory of Chronic Diseases and Their Homeopathic Treatment, Vol. 3 Homoeopathic physicians should avail themselves of the means which the recent improvements in phy siology and pathology have furnished us, to establish a more correct diagnosis of the various diseases which physicians are called upon to treat. What a pity that the modern discoveries in those sciences have not led to any great practical results in the hands of allceo pathic physicians It may even be said that they have done mischief, inasmuch as they have completely de molished the tottering faith of some of the best thinkers of the alloeopathic school in their Materia Medica. A more correct knowledge of the true character of disor ganizations and morbid products showed conclusively that the curative resources of the allceopathic Materia Medica were insufficient to restore the original healthy condition of the diseased part, and those physicians had therefore to content themselves with offering the patients learned dissertations on the nature of their sufferings, without being able to afford any relief. To the homcebpathic physician. However, the investiga tions of physiologists and pathologists are not lost. They extend his knowledge of the curative relations existing between his remedies and the disease, and enable him to build his science of therapeutics upon a sure and permanent foundation. Book Synopsis Personhood and Health Care by : David C. Thomasma
Download or read book Personhood and Health Care written by David C. Thomasma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PERSONHOOD AND HEALTH CARE This book arose as a result of a pre-conference devoted to the topic held June 28, 1999 in Paris, France. The pre-conference preceded the Annual Congress of the International Academy ofLaw and Mental Health. Other chapters were solicited after the conference in order to more completely explore the relation of personhood to health care. The pre conference was held in honor of Yves Pelicier who led so many of our French colleagues in medicine, philosophy, and ethics as Christian Herve notes in his Tribute. As health care is aimed at healing persons, it is important to realize how difficult it is to construct a theory of personhood for health care, and thus, a theory of how healing in health care comes about or ought to occur. The book is divided into four parts, Concepts of the Person, Theories of Personhood in Relation to Health Care and Bioethics, Person and Identity, and Personhood and Hs Relations. Each section explores a critical arena in constructing the relation of personhood to health care. Although no exploration ofthis nature can be exhaustive, every effort was made to present both conflicting and complementary views of personhood from within similar and different philosophical and religious traditions. PART ONE: CONCEPTS OF THE PERSON Tracing the origins of the concept of person from antiquity through present day, Jean Delemeau provides an historical sketch of the development of a wide range of meanings.
Book Synopsis The Gastro-Archeologist by : Jeremy Woodward
Download or read book The Gastro-Archeologist written by Jeremy Woodward and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand common conditions such as coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease, one must view the gut in its evolutionary context. This is the novel approach to the gut and its diseases that is adopted in this book. The first part tells the story of the evolution of the gut itself – why it came about and how it has influenced the evolution of animals ever since. The second part focuses on the evolution of immunity and how the layers of immune mechanisms are retained in the gut, resembling the strata revealed in an archeological dig. The final part, ‘The Gastro-Archeologist’, ties the first two together and highlights how understanding the gut and immune system in their evolutionary context can help us understand diseases affecting them. Ambitious in its scope but telling a unique story from a refreshingly novel perspective, the book offers an informative and enjoyable read. As the story of the gut, immunity and disease unfolds, the author aims to endow readers with the same sense of awe and excitement that the subject evokes in him. Difficult concepts are illustrated using simple and colourful analogies, and the main content is supplemented with anecdotes and unusual and amusing facts throughout the book. The book is intended for anyone with an interest in the gut, its immunity and diseases, ranging from school and college biology and biomedical students, to professionals working in the field, and to patients suffering from intestinal diseases who want to understand more about their conditions.

Book Synopsis When Abortion Was a Crime by : Leslie J. Reagan
Download or read book When Abortion Was a Crime written by Leslie J. Reagan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of abortion in the United States, with a new preface that equips readers for what’s to come. When Abortion Was a Crime is the must-read book on abortion history. Originally published ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this award-winning study was the first to examine the entire period during which abortion was illegal in the United States, beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and ending with that monumental case in 1973. When Abortion Was a Crime is filled with intimate stories and nuanced analysis, demonstrating how abortion was criminalized and policed—and how millions of women sought abortions regardless of the law. With this edition, Leslie J. Reagan provides a new preface that addresses the dangerous and ongoing threats to abortion access across the country, and the precarity of our current moment. While abortions have typically been portrayed as grim "back alley" operations, this deeply researched history confirms that many abortion providers—including physicians—practiced openly and safely, despite prohibitions by the state and the American Medical Association. Women could find cooperative and reliable practitioners; but prosecution, public humiliation, loss of privacy, and inferior medical care were a constant threat. Reagan's analysis of previously untapped sources, including inquest records and trial transcripts, shows the fragility of patient rights and raises provocative questions about the relationship between medicine and law. With the right to abortion increasingly under attack, this book remains the definitive history of abortion in the United States, offering vital lessons for every American concerned with health care, civil liberties, and personal and sexual freedom.
