Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses Delivered Before the Dauphin County Historical Society: In the State Capitol, Harrisburg, July 4, 1876 [In every section of Dauphin county, the one hundredth anniversary of American Independence was celebrated with a degree of enthusiasm scarcely equaled since Independence Bell "Proclaimed Liberty throughout all the Land," in 1776. In the City of Harrisburg, and the boroughs of Lykens, Millersburg and Middletown, the celebration embraced civic parades, orations, and displays of fire-works. At the seat of government the arrangements for addresses to be delivered on the occasion, was conceded, as it was confided to the Historical Society of Dauphin county, which at once directed the preparation of appropriate sketches, assigned as follows: The Ecclesiastical History of Dauphin County: To Rev. Thomas H. Robinson, D. D. Dauphin County in the Revolution: To A. Boyd Hamilton. Historical Review of Dauphin County: To William H. Egle, M. D. In addition to these, John L. Sexton was requested to prepare an address on the "Industrial Progress of Pennsylvania." The three former being the more intimately connected with the historic record of the county of Dauphin, are herewith presented. Download or read book Pennsylvania in Public Memory written by Carolyn Kitch and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What stories do we tell about America’s once-great industries at a time when they are fading from the landscape? Pennsylvania in Public Memory attempts to answer that question, exploring the emergence of a heritage culture of industry and its loss through the lens of its most representative industrial state. Based on news coverage, interviews, and more than two hundred heritage sites, this book traces the narrative themes that shape modern public memory of coal, steel, railroading, lumber, oil, and agriculture, and that collectively tell a story about national as well as local identity in a changing social and economic world.

Download or read book Steelton written by Michael Barton and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the 20th century, the name Steelton represented a great industrial complex that stretched nearly four miles along the Susquehanna River near the state's capital of Harrisburg. Immigrants from all over Europe, particularly Slavs and Italians, worked with African Americans from the South at the Bethlehem Steel Company and gave Steelton its reputation for ethnic diversity, second only to its fame for industrial productivity. Catholics, Protestants, and Jews filled the town's various houses of worship, but the taverns on Front Street, across from the mill, were crowded too. The town's powerful athletes were often state champions, beating schools many times larger. The townsmen were all proud as well of their loyal service in U.S. forces in the two world wars. The vintage images in Steelton chronicle the history of this exceptional and diverse community.

Download or read book Clearfield written by Julie Rae Rickard and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cearfield brings to life a time when carriages traveled the streets, lumber floated down the river, William Jennings Bryan visited Curwensville, Houtzdale's "Alley Popper" railway was running, and people enjoyed fine dining and dancing at the Dimeling Hotel. Postcards, once a convenient and easy way to communicate, inadvertently became an important way of preserving history. The cards of this exciting new collection bear witness to many moments in Clearfield history, including World War I soldiers marching down Market Street, the 1936 flood, the collapse of the Nichols Street Bridge, and the aftermath of the Opera House fire.
Book Synopsis Women's Suffrage Memorabilia by : Kenneth Florey
Download or read book Women's Suffrage Memorabilia written by Kenneth Florey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While historians have long recognized the importance of memorabilia to the Woman Suffrage movement, the subject has not been explored apart from a few restricted, albeit excellent, studies. Part of the problem is that such objects are scattered about in various collections and museums and can be difficult to access. Another is that most scholars do not have ready knowledge 1of the general nature and history of the type of objects (postcards, badges, sashes, toys, ceramics, sheet music, etc.) that suffragists produced. Then-new techniques in both printing and manufacturing created numerous possibilities for supporters to develop campaigns of "visual rhetoric." This work analyzes 70 different categories of suffrage memorabilia, while providing numerous images of relevant objects along the way and discussing these innovative production methods. Most important, this study looks at period accounts, often fascinating, of how, why when, and where the memorabilia were used in both America and England.
