Book excerpt: The first decades of the third Millennium have brought about a huge amount of information out of all areas of human activity, requiring a strong systematization of them all… This endeavor taxonomy requires beyond of an encyclopedic approach, courage of the author in finding and imposing a line of ordering, in such a way, that the comprehension of it to overcome the limits, the borders of his own understanding… The increased complexity of a such Info – Data – Task – Force of Human, put a huge pressure an author, also in an enlarge diversity and complexification of the triad of the publications as book – booklet – bookish… More than that, a confrontation between the science of physics, in its becoming through biophysics and metaphysics, with the Oriental philosophy of the triad in Sanskrit ( Hinduism – Buddhism – Jainism ) and the triad of the Chinese Philosophy ( Taoism – Confucianism – Chan Buddhism) could bring about another vision, another light, over the evolutionary triad of the cosmology – biology and human ontology, by enriching in this way, even the Species Sapiens through its own thesaurus of reason, diversity and creativity… Sapientologist

Book excerpt: A textbook that covers Physical concepts at a basic level for manual therapists specifically . Clinicians in general and manual therapists in particular have a need tounderstand certain, specific aspects of physics to an advanced level. However, many lack prior education in this area, with chemistry and biology 'A' levels being emphasized in terms of entrance requirements. Most textbooks aimed at this field concentrate exclusively on the physics underpinning biomechanics, but the level at which these books are pitched is often too high to allow understanding by students who have an inadequate background in the subject. This book acts, in part, as a primer to address this deficit. Students are also required to understand the basic physics underpinning physiology, biochemistry, radiography and therapeutics. This textbook will be a guide to these specialist areas of knowledge. This text will cover biophysics as a core subject to guide the potential clinician from total ignorance to complete mastery in the areas of physics pertinent to manual medicine and its related disciplines. - Self assessment questions at the beginning of each chapter allow readers to check their existing knowledge prior to reading the chapter. - Each section builds from basic principles to advanced levels. - Clinical focus.

Book excerpt: This volume is the outgrowth of a workshop held in October, 2000 at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at the Harvard- Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA. The aim of this book (similar in theme to the workshop) is to present an overview of new directions in antimatter physics and chemistry research. The emphasis is on positron and positronium interactions both with themselves and with ordinary matter. The timeliness of this subject comes from several considerations. New concepts for intense positron sources and the development of positron accumulators and trap-based positron beams provide qualitatively new experimental capabilities. On the theoretical side, the ability to model complex systems and complex processes has increased dramatically in recent years, due in part to progress in computational physics. There are presently an intriguing variety of phenomena that await theoretical explanation. It is virtually assured that the new experimental capabilities in this area will lead to a rapid expansion of this list. This book is organized into four sections: The first section discusses potential new experimental capabilities and the uses and the progress that might be made with them. The second section discusses topics involving antihydrogen and many-body phenomena, including Bose condensation of positronium atoms and positron interactions with materials. The final two sections treat a range of topics involving positron and positronium interactions with atoms and molecules.

Book excerpt: The mathematical formalism of quantum theory in terms of vectors and operators in infinite-dimensional complex vector spaces is very abstract. The definitions of many mathematical quantities used do not seem to have an intuitive meaning, which makes it difficult to appreciate the mathematical formalism and understand quantum mechanics. This book provides intuition and motivation to the mathematics of quantum theory, introducing the mathematics in its simplest and familiar form, for instance, with three-dimensional vectors and operators, which can be readily understood. Feeling confident about and comfortable with the mathematics used helps readers appreciate and understand the concepts and formalism of quantum mechanics. This book is divided into four parts. Part I is a brief review of the general properties of classical and quantum systems. A general discussion of probability theory is also included which aims to help in understanding the probability theories relevant to quantum mechanics. Part II is a detailed study of the mathematics for quantum mechanics. Part III presents quantum mechanics in a series of postulates. Six groups of postulates are presented to describe orthodox quantum systems. Each statement of a postulate is supplemented with a detailed discussion. To make them easier to understand, the postulates for discrete observables are presented before those for continuous observables. Part IV presents several illustrative applications, which include harmonic and isotropic oscillators, charged particle in external magnetic fields and the Aharonov–Bohm effect. For easy reference, definitions, theorems, examples, comments, properties and results are labelled with section numbers. Various symbols and notations are adopted to distinguish different quantities explicitly and to avoid misrepresentation. Self-contained both mathematically and physically, the book is accessible to a wide readership, including astrophysicists, mathematicians and philosophers of science who are interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics.
