Book excerpt: First major study of the most significant Cornish-born artist in the Newlyn art colony which flourished from 1880 to 1930. Kenneth McConkey sets Harvey in the context of the art movements of the time, and shows how his early 'genre' paintings of rustic and marine life, so characteristic of the early Newlyn artists, gradually gave way to a more sophisticated subject matter - Harvey was noted for his sumptuous interiors - and a flatter and more decorative style of painting. His early work could be compared with that of Stanhope Forbes, while his later paintings show clear affinities with those of fellow painters such as Laura Knight and Dod Procter. The book includes a 'life' of the artist and catalog raisonne of more than 600 paintings. There are 110 illustrations of Harvey's favoured subjects: the Cornish at work, children at play, and intimate interior scenes and conversation pieces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deeply personal memoir of Lydia Meredith, a woman who spent almost thirty years married to a preacher—only to have her husband leave her for a man—and how her life becomes a testimony of tolerance and a theology of love and acceptance. After being married to Reverend Dennis A. Meredith for almost thirty years, Lydia Meredith discovers a shocking truth: the love of her life left her for a man. Now, Lydia opens up for the first time about how that revelation shattered her world—and strengthened her faith. With her life turned upside down, Lydia struggled to put the pieces of her broken heart back together and that led her to pursue understanding through an accredited theological education. She wanted a way to put her family back together and she found Jesus’ ministry and teachings were “actually” about teaching tolerance and love for people who are labeled different. Candid, honest, and incredibly touching, Lydia Meredith shows that faith and perseverance can get you through any challenge life throws your way.

Book excerpt: Desperate Jack Doyle accepts a sketchy job which leads to a deadly game of fixing horse races and murder—of the four-legged kind.... One-time amateur boxer Jack Doyle, an irreverent and rebellious advertising account representative, goes to work one fine Chicago day and finds his desk—and his job—both gone. A two-time loser at the marriage game as well, Doyle, usually ultra-confident, fishes himself out of a bottle to take stock, realizing, "with a thumping finality, that Life sure as hell did have his number and was crunching it". At loose ends, Doyle accepts a most unusual offer from an acquaintance, Moe Kellman, "furrier to the Mob", to fix a horse race. The context of making the deal, a Cubs game at storied Wrigley Field, sets the tone for the drama that follows. Thus begins a chain of events that will lead the FBI to Doyle's door where they "co-opt" him into a quest after people who are maiming or killing thoroughbred horses for their insurance values. Their number one target is a loathsome media mogul who can't bear to lose at anything. Built upon recent factual events, spiced with satire and peppered throughout with engaging loonies, Blind Switch is a noteworthy first novel with a hero forced to ask in its ultimate line, "Where have I gone right?"

Book excerpt: Cornwall, the land of sandy beaches, pretty fishing coves, historic fishing ports, tin mining, mansions and gardens, quaint thatched cottages, atmospheric moors, art galleries, writers and picturesque towns? All of that is true but there is so much more to Cornwall and its influence on the rest of Britain and many parts of the world is often forgotten or unknown but yet continues. The county has seen political intrigue; religious upheavals; financial scandals. It has produced political radicals, slaves and slave owners; artists, writers and musicians; renowned engineers, mineralogists and scientists and was the first to introduce compulsory education. Cornwall was the birthplace of the discoverers of chemical elements, the planet Neptune and solar power and has been hugely significant in radio, electrical telegraphy and television. Cornish people have been influential across the centuries, the world and an incredible number of disciplines.

Book excerpt: Dappled Sunshine begins with Gretchen Schillingberg reminiscing over the family’s journey from Townsville to Marathon Station near Aramac and agonizing over the disappearance of the Aboriginal girl, Bindi whom they’d befriended on the journey. Gretchen’s husband, Georg is turning his dream of building fine buildings into a reality with the near completion of the new Marathon homestead. Gretchen’s dream of being a cordon bleu cook in their own inn also seems to get off the ground when she’s asked to cook for the shearers, but her dream comes crashing down when the unpopular station Manager is poisoned, presumably by a meal she has cooked. With the Marathon homestead built, the family moves to Aramac where Georg has no trouble getting building work, but it’s the friendship that the Schillingbergs develop with the school teacher, Jerry Pershouse, that threatens Georg’s future in the town. Why is the building project, that Georg undertakes for Jerry, so toxic for so many in the community? Gretchen opens a café in Aramac and woos the town with her cooking, and all the Schillingberg projects including their newly built Wayside Inn promise prosperity for everyone in the now the extended family. Days before the grand opening of the Wayside Inn, however, history deals them a malevolent hand that could see the Inn destroyed or at least, boycotted in anger. Will the Schillingbergs emerge triumphant from this last deep shadow?
