Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With Harold, I witnessed the loving shaping of material as integral to the idea. The closer the material was to the hand, the more meaningful became the shaping."- From the Foreword by Tom Kundig Defining the art of Harold Balazs isn't easy. Encompassing prints, sculpture, architecture, jewelry, and installations, his work crosses boundaries and changes shape with a force that has arrested viewers since the 1950s. His art is a full-blown manifestation of his vision in diverse media and scale. Balazs summed up his art and his approach best when he said, "I make stuff because it's easier than not making stuff." No other Northwest artist has cut quite as wide a swath through the regional culture over the past fifty years as Balazs, who has been called the people's artist of the Northwest. His free spirit, boundless energy, and meticulous eye for detail have shaped the region's art. Balazs's work can be found in public and private collections from Spokane to Seattle, and he has been called the most important liturgical artist in the nation. His fine skills as a teacher can be seen in the work of many of his students, now artists and architects themselves. The voices of a dozen of these former students as well as admirers and friends are found in this book, the first publication to honor Balazs's extraordinary gifts. His career is captured here in remarkable candor that speaks to the artist's humanity, humor, and love of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Architect Tom Kundig is known worldwide for the originality of his work. This paperback edition of Tom Kundig: Houses, first published in 2006, collects five of his most prominent early residential projects, which remain touchstones for him today. In a new preface written for this edition, Kundig reflects on the influence that these designs continue to have on his current thinking. Each house, presented from conceptual sketches through meticulously realized details, is the product of a sustained and active collaborative process among designer, builder, and client. The work of the Seattle-based architect has been called both raw and refined--disparate characteristics that produce extraordinarily inventive designs inspired by both the industrial structures ubiquitous to his upbringing in the Pacific Northwest and the vibrant craft cultures that are fostered there." --
Book Synopsis The Art of Fine Enameling by : Karen L. Cohen
Download or read book The Art of Fine Enameling written by Karen L. Cohen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive book of enameling and enameling techniques has been completely revised to bring you this essential new reference. The wonderful world of enameling—fusing glass to metal under high-temperature conditions-- is diverse! Practically anything made from enamel-friendly metal can be enameled, from vases to jewelry to buttons to metal mesh and solid forms. In the first edition, published in 2002, Cohen explored this world as it was then, but so much knowledge has been gained in the last 17 years that it was definitely time for an update! Every chapter and project has been completely reviewed, revised, and updated; it’s a whole new book, and one you will want in your reference library. The look and organization is updated, 15 years of experience has been added, about half the projects have changed, and two types of mini-projects to expand your learning experience are included. In addition, each project has a gallery of the work of other artists working in the same technique, to give a view of other ways a technique can look and be used. Classic techniques such as champlevé, cloisonné, and plique-à-jour each have projects, as do newer approaches such as the use of graphite pencil and enameling on steel—21 project lessons in all. And you will find the extensive troubleshooting chapter indispensable. **Silver Award Winner in Foreword Reviews Indie Awards in Hobbies & Home, 2019

Download or read book Art from the Swamp written by Bruce Cole and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Americans are aware that Washington is the country’s largest single patron of art. Every year a group of unelected federal bureaucrats and congressmen spends millions of taxpayer dollars on monuments, sculptures, buildings, plays, and exhibitions, largely without public knowledge or involvement. Frank Gehry’s outlandish memorial to President Eisenhower, an installation that blinks quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt in Morse code at a cash-strapped Veterans Administration hospital, a giant $750,00 wood sculpture whose fumes sickened workers in an FBI building in Miami, FL, and funding for research on the visual cultures of tea consumption in Imperial India are just a few of the hundreds of unwanted and wasteful projects supported annually by the General Services Administration, the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities, and their enablers on Capitol Hill. In this book, Bruce Cole, the longest serving chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, exposes the programs and policies responsible for this glut of unsupervised bureaucratic pork and offers suggestions for their reform or elimination.

Download or read book Go East! written by Balázs Ablonczy and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two centuries, Hungarians believed they shared an ethnic link with people of Japanese, Bulgarian, Estonian, Finnish, and Turkic descent. Known as "Turanism," this ideology impacts Hungarian politics, science, and cultural and ethnic identity even today. In Go East!: A History of Hungarian Turanism, Balázs Ablonczy examines the rise of Hungarian Turanism and its lasting effect on the country's history. Turanism arose from the collapse of the Kingdom of Hungary, when the nation's intellectuals began to question Hungary's place in the Western world. The influence of this ideology reached its peak during World War I, when Turanian societies funded research, economic missions, and geographical expeditions. Ablonczy traces Turanism from its foundations through its radicalization in the interwar period, its survival in emigrant circles, and its resurgence during the economic crisis of 2008. Turanian notions can be seen today in the rise of the extreme right-wing party Jobbik and in Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán's party Fidesz. Go East! provides fresh insight into Turanism's key political and artistic influences in Hungary and illuminates the mark it has left on history.
