As students in this discipline, it is crucial to understand the significance of hydroelectric power and its impact on our society and the environment. In this subchapter, we will delve into the various aspects that make hydroelectric power an indispensable source of renewable energy. First and foremost, hydroelectric power is a clean and renewable source of energy. Unlike fossil fuels, which contribute to air pollution and global warming, hydroelectric power generation does not emit harmful greenhouse gases. It relies on the force of moving water, which is constantly replenished by the water cycle, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to our energy needs. Furthermore, hydroelectric power plays a vital role in meeting the increasing demand for electricity worldwide. As the global population continues to grow, so does the need for reliable and affordable energy. Hydroelectric power plants can generate a significant amount of electricity, making it a feasible option for countries striving to meet their growing energy demands. In addition to providing electricity, hydroelectric power also offers multiple benefits in terms of water management. Hydroelectric dams serve as reservoirs, allowing for the controlled storage and release of water. This enables us to manage water resources effectively, ensuring a stable water supply for agricultural, industrial, and domestic use. Moreover, hydroelectric power plants can assist in flood control by regulating water levels during periods of heavy rainfall, mitigating the risk of destructive floods. Another crucial aspect of hydroelectric power is its ability to support local economies. The construction and operation of hydroelectric power plants create job opportunities, thus stimulating economic growth in the surrounding areas. Additionally, hydroelectric power plants often become tourist attractions, attracting visitors and boosting the tourism industry, which further contributes to the local economy. Understanding the importance of hydroelectric power is essential for energy engineering students. As future professionals in this field, it is our responsibility to explore and develop sustainable energy solutions that can meet the demands of our growing world population. By harnessing the power of water, we can make a significant difference in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and combating climate change.

Book excerpt: Now a Netflix film starring and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is a gripping memoir of survival and perseverance about the heroic young inventor who brought electricity to his Malawian village. When a terrible drought struck William Kamkwamba's tiny village in Malawi, his family lost all of the season's crops, leaving them with nothing to eat and nothing to sell. William began to explore science books in his village library, looking for a solution. There, he came up with the idea that would change his family's life forever: he could build a windmill. Made out of scrap metal and old bicycle parts, William's windmill brought electricity to his home and helped his family pump the water they needed to farm the land. Retold for a younger audience, this exciting memoir shows how, even in a desperate situation, one boy's brilliant idea can light up the world. Complete with photographs, illustrations, and an epilogue that will bring readers up to date on William's story, this is the perfect edition to read and share with the whole family.

Book excerpt: This fact sheet provides an overview of the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Program's water power research activities. Water power is the nation's largest source of clean, domestic, renewable energy. Harnessing energy from rivers, manmade waterways, and oceans to generate electricity for the nation's homes and businesses can help secure America's energy future. Water power technologies fall into two broad categories: conventional hydropower and marine and hydrokinetic technologies. Conventional hydropower facilities include run-of-the-river, storage, and pumped storage. Most conventional hydropower plants use a diversion structure, such as a dam, to capture water's potential energy via a turbine for electricity generation. Marine and hydrokinetic technologies obtain energy from waves, tides, ocean currents, free-flowing rivers, streams and ocean thermal gradients to generate electricity. The United States has abundant water power resources, enough to meet a large portion of the nation's electricity demand. Conventional hydropower generated 257 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity in 2010 and provides 6-7% of all electricity in the United States. According to preliminary estimates from the Electric Power Resource Institute (EPRI), the United States has additional water power resource potential of more than 85,000 megawatts (MW). This resource potential includes making efficiency upgrades to existing hydroelectric facilities, developing new low-impact facilities, and using abundant marine and hydrokinetic energy resources. EPRI research suggests that ocean wave and in-stream tidal energy production potential is equal to about 10% of present U.S. electricity consumption (about 400 terrawatt-hours per year). The greatest of these resources is wave energy, with the most potential in Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest. The Department of Energy's (DOE's) Water Power Program works with industry, universities, other federal agencies, and DOE's national laboratories to promote the development and deployment of technologies capable of generating environmentally sustainable and cost-effective electricity from the nation's water resources.
