Book Synopsis The Effective Investor by : Franco Busetti
Download or read book The Effective Investor written by Franco Busetti and published by Franco Busetti. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stock markets are not efficient, returns are incommensurate with risk, investors are irrational, bubbles and crashes recur regularly, analysts are usually wrong, economists even more so, luck is mostly mistaken for skill, myths and misconceptions abound and most of the industry participants are simply noise generators. This is even more true for emerging markets. South Africa can be termed a developed emerging market and is the newest member of the BRICS group. The Effective Investor is the first book to deal specifically with investing in the South African stock market, filling a surprising gap given the widespread interest that has been shown in South Africa as an emerging market and the gateway to the resource-rich African continent. Understanding the South African market provides insight into the paths that emerging and frontier markets will follow in future. While the investment lessons from the South African market outlined in this book are universal, understanding some of its peculiarities is also important. For example, some insight into the behaviour of the currency, the rand, is clearly critical in terms of any investment in this market, as well as in providing some understanding of other volatile emerging market currencies, as well as because it is often treated as the most liquid proxy for these currencies, particularly during upheavals. Similarly, the techniques highlighted in the book for dealing with volatility are applicable to similar markets elsewhere. South Africa is also an attractive market in its own right. It has been the third-best performing stock market in the world since 1900, and has weathered the great financial crisis with flying colors. The book provides readers with the findings of leading-edge research conducted into the South African stock market, the results of which are normally reserved for professional institutions and is written by a practicing, top-rated investment professional. The book also has guest contributions from some of South Africa's most astute professional analysts and fund managers on their specific areas of expertise, providing exceptional insight into current investment thinking. The Effective Investor is essential reading for every potential, novice or professional investor and investment adviser in emerging markets who wants to understand the most important principles of the South African stock market to ensure successful investing.
Download or read book Onto-Ethologies written by Brett Buchanan and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2008-10-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German biologist Jakob von Uexküll focused on how an animal, through its behavioral relations, both impacts and is impacted by its own unique environment. Onto-Ethologies traces the influence of Uexküll's ideas on the thought of Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Gilles Deleuze, as they explore how animal behavior might be said to approximate, but also differ from, human behavior. It is the relation between animal and environment that interests Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, and Deleuze, and yet it is the differences in their approach to Uexküll (and to concepts such as world, body, and affect) that prove so fascinating. This book explores the ramifications of these encounters, including how animal life both broadens and deepens the ontological significance of their respective philosophies.

Download or read book Tango Midnight written by Michael Cassutt and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 2005, and the world has changed. International terrorists have released a genetically modified disease, called X-Pox, on the world. There is no greater challenge to medicine than finding a cure. Biochem billionaire Tad Mikleszewski (called TM by nearly everyone) is a "space junkie" who has been the primary investor backing the Spacelifter project, a private attempt to build a single-stage to orbit vehicle. But Spacelifter's crucial test firing has failed, and TM is going to pull the plug. He has a better idea for getting himself into space....he'll buy research time on the International Space Station, to work on a cure for X-Pox. The Russians will sell him a seat on the Soyuz taxi vehicle for a mere $30 million. But the equipment in the Harmony Laboratory module was salvaged from old Russian military labs, and perhaps TM's skills are a little bit out of date. A tiny leak - a small hole in the seal of the isolation box where TM is manipulating the X-Pox pathogen, and Harmony is contaminated by the disease that kills within three weeks. Now it's a race against time, to rescue the crew and decontaminate the Space Station. NASA has a shuttle a month from launch, and if Astronaut Kelly Gessner can be retrained in decontamination procedures they can push that up two weeks. The Russians have a third Soyuz due off the assembly line, but Astronaut Mark Koskinen, NASA's chief of staff at Star City doesn't think they'll make it in time. But whether Russian or American, someone is going to have to get up there, and fast.
