Over the last 10–15 years, this theory has been extended to certain non-holomorphic functions, the so-called “harmonic Maass forms”. The first glimpses of this theory appeared in Ramanujan's enigmatic last letter to G. H. Hardy written from his deathbed. Ramanujan discovered functions he called “mock theta functions” which over eighty years later were recognized as pieces of harmonic Maass forms. This book contains the essential features of the theory of harmonic Maass forms and mock modular forms, together with a wide variety of applications to algebraic number theory, combinatorics, elliptic curves, mathematical physics, quantum modular forms, and representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This marvellous and highly original book fills a significant gap in the extensive literature on classical modular forms. This is not just yet another introductory text to this theory, though it could certainly be used as such in conjunction with more traditional treatments. Its novelty lies in its computational emphasis throughout: Stein not only defines what modular forms are, but shows in illuminating detail how one can compute everything about them in practice. This is illustrated throughout the book with examples from his own (entirely free) software package SAGE, which really bring the subject to life while not detracting in any way from its theoretical beauty. The author is the leading expert in computations with modular forms, and what he says on this subject is all tried and tested and based on his extensive experience. As well as being an invaluable companion to those learning the theory in a more traditional way, this book will be a great help to those who wish to use modular forms in applications, such as in the explicit solution of Diophantine equations. There is also a useful Appendix by Gunnells on extensions to more general modular forms, which has enough in it to inspire many PhD theses for years to come. While the book's main readership will be graduate students in number theory, it will also be accessible to advanced undergraduates and useful to both specialists and non-specialists in number theory. --John E. Cremona, University of Nottingham William Stein is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Washington at Seattle. He earned a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley and has held positions at Harvard University and UC San Diego. His current research interests lie in modular forms, elliptic curves, and computational mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of modular forms is a fundamental tool used in many areas of mathematics and physics. It is also a very concrete and “fun” subject in itself and abounds with an amazing number of surprising identities. This comprehensive textbook, which includes numerous exercises, aims to give a complete picture of the classical aspects of the subject, with an emphasis on explicit formulas. After a number of motivating examples such as elliptic functions and theta functions, the modular group, its subgroups, and general aspects of holomorphic and nonholomorphic modular forms are explained, with an emphasis on explicit examples. The heart of the book is the classical theory developed by Hecke and continued up to the Atkin–Lehner–Li theory of newforms and including the theory of Eisenstein series, Rankin–Selberg theory, and a more general theory of theta series including the Weil representation. The final chapter explores in some detail more general types of modular forms such as half-integral weight, Hilbert, Jacobi, Maass, and Siegel modular forms. Some “gems” of the book are an immediately implementable trace formula for Hecke operators, generalizations of Haberland's formulas for the computation of Petersson inner products, W. Li's little-known theorem on the diagonalization of the full space of modular forms, and explicit algorithms due to the second author for computing Maass forms. This book is essentially self-contained, the necessary tools such as gamma and Bessel functions, Bernoulli numbers, and so on being given in a separate chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The functions studied in this monogra9h are a cross between elliptic functions and modular forms in one variable. Specifically, we define a Jacobi form on SL (~) to be a holomorphic function 2 (JC = upper half-plane) satisfying the t\-10 transformation eouations 2Tiimcz· k CT +d a-r +b z) (1) ((cT+d) e cp(T, z) cp CT +d ' CT +d (2) rjl(T, z+h+]l) and having a Four·ier expansion of the form 00 e2Tii(nT +rz) (3) cp(T, z) 2: c(n, r) 2:: rE~ n=O 2 r ~ 4nm Here k and m are natural numbers, called the weight and index of rp, respectively. Note that th e function cp (T, 0) is an ordinary modular formofweight k, whileforfixed T thefunction z-+rjl( -r, z) isa function of the type normally used to embed the elliptic curve ~/~T + ~ into a projective space. If m= 0, then cp is independent of z and the definition reduces to the usual notion of modular forms in one variable. We give three other examples of situations where functions satisfying (1)-(3) arise classically: 1. Theta series. Let Q: ~-+ ~ be a positive definite integer valued quadratic form and B the associated bilinear form.

Borcherds discovered a new type of meromorphic modular form on the orthogonal group $O(2,n)$. These "Borcherds products" have infinite product expansions analogous to the Dedekind eta-function. They arise as multiplicative liftings of elliptic modular forms on $(SL)_2(R)$. The fact that the zeros and poles of Borcherds products are explicitly given in terms of Heegner divisors makes them interesting for geometric and arithmetic applications. In the present text the Borcherds' construction is extended to Maass wave forms and is used to study the Chern classes of Heegner divisors. A converse theorem for the lifting is proved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of modular forms and especially the so-called 'Ramanujan Conjectures' have been applied to resolve problems in combinatorics, computer science, analysis and number theory. This tract, based on the Wittemore Lectures given at Yale University, is concerned with describing some of these applications. In order to keep the presentation reasonably self-contained, Professor Sarnak begins by developing the necessary background material in modular forms. He then considers the solution of three problems: the Ruziewicz problem concerning finitely additive rotationally invariant measures on the sphere; the explicit construction of highly connected but sparse graphs: 'expander graphs' and 'Ramanujan graphs'; and the Linnik problem concerning the distribution of integers that represent a given large integer as a sum of three squares. These applications are carried out in detail. The book therefore should be accessible to a wide audience of graduate students and researchers in mathematics and computer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a rigorous analytical treatment of the theory of Maass wave forms. Readers will find this unified presentation invaluable, as it treats Maass wave forms as the central area of interest. Subjects at the cutting edge of research are explored in depth, such as Maass wave forms of real weight and the cohomology attached to Maass wave forms and transfer operators. Because Maass wave forms are given a deep exploration, this book offers an indispensable resource for those entering the field. Early chapters present a brief introduction to the theory of classical modular forms, with an emphasis on objects and results necessary to fully understand later material. Chapters 4 and 5 contain the book’s main focus: L-functions and period functions associated with families of Maass wave forms. Other topics include Maass wave forms of real weight, Maass cusp forms, and weak harmonic Maass wave forms. Engaging exercises appear throughout the book, with solutions available online. On the Theory of Maass Wave Forms is ideal for graduate students and researchers entering the area. Readers in mathematical physics and other related disciplines will find this a useful reference as well. Knowledge of complex analysis, real analysis, and abstract algebra is required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1976, George Andrews of Pennsylvania State University visited the library at Trinity College, Cambridge, to examine the papers of the late G.N. Watson. Among these papers, Andrews discovered a sheaf of 138 pages in the handwriting of Srinivasa Ramanujan. This manuscript was soon designated, "Ramanujan's lost notebook." Its discovery has frequently been deemed the mathematical equivalent of finding Beethoven's tenth symphony. This fifth and final installment of the authors’ examination of Ramanujan’s lost notebook focuses on the mock theta functions first introduced in Ramanujan’s famous Last Letter. This volume proves all of the assertions about mock theta functions in the lost notebook and in the Last Letter, particularly the celebrated mock theta conjectures. Other topics feature Ramanujan’s many elegant Euler products and the remaining entries on continued fractions not discussed in the preceding volumes. Review from the second volume:"Fans of Ramanujan's mathematics are sure to be delighted by this book. While some of the content is taken directly from published papers, most chapters contain new material and some previously published proofs have been improved. Many entries are just begging for further study and will undoubtedly be inspiring research for decades to come. The next installment in this series is eagerly awaited."- MathSciNet Review from the first volume:"Andrews and Berndt are to be congratulated on the job they are doing. This is the first step...on the way to an understanding of the work of the genius Ramanujan. It should act as an inspiration to future generations of mathematicians to tackle a job that will never be complete."- Gazette of the Australian Mathematical Society

These series were first studied systematically by Heine, but many early results are attributed to Euler, Gauss, and Jacobi. This book provides a simple approach to basic hypergeometric series.

Book excerpt: In this essential, Claudia Alfes-Neumann discusses applications of the theory of modular forms and their importance as fundamental tools in mathematics. These functions - initially defined purely analytically - appear in many areas of mathematics: very prominently in number theory, but also in geometry, combinatorics, representation theory, and physics. After explaining necessary basics from complex analysis, the author defines modular forms and shows some applications in number theory. Furthermore, she takes up two important aspects of the theory surrounding modular forms: Hecke operators and L-functions of modular forms. The essentials conclude with an outlook on real-analytic generalizations of modular forms, which play an important role in current research. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Modulformen by Claudia Alfes-Neumann, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Book excerpt: This book presents a printed testimony for the fact that George Andrews, one of the world’s leading experts in partitions and q-series for the last several decades, has passed the milestone age of 80. To honor George Andrews on this occasion, the conference “Combinatory Analysis 2018” was organized at the Pennsylvania State University from June 21 to 24, 2018. This volume comprises the original articles from the Special Issue “Combinatory Analysis 2018 – In Honor of George Andrews’ 80th Birthday” resulting from the conference and published in Annals of Combinatorics. In addition to the 37 articles of the Andrews 80 Special Issue, the book includes two new papers. These research contributions explore new grounds and present new achievements, research trends, and problems in the area. The volume is complemented by three special personal contributions: “The Worlds of George Andrews, a daughter’s take” by Amy Alznauer, “My association and collaboration with George Andrews” by Krishna Alladi, and “Ramanujan, his Lost Notebook, its importance” by Bruce Berndt. Another aspect which gives this Andrews volume a truly unique character is the “Photos” collection. In addition to pictures taken at “Combinatory Analysis 2018”, the editors selected a variety of photos, many of them not available elsewhere: “Andrews in Austria”, “Andrews in China”, “Andrews in Florida”, “Andrews in Illinois”, and “Andrews in India”. This volume will be of interest to researchers, PhD students, and interested practitioners working in the area of Combinatory Analysis, q-Series, and related fields.
