Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are hardware primitives which utilize disorder from manufacturing variations for their core functionality. In contrast to insecure non-volatile key based roots-of-trust, PUFs promise a favorable feature - no attacker, not even the PUF manufacturer can clone the disorder and any attempt at invasive attack will upset that disorder. Despite a decade of research, certain practical problems impede the widespread adoption of PUFs. This dissertation addresses the important problems of (i) post-manufacturing testing, (ii) secure design and (iii) cost efficiency of PUFs. This is with the aim of making PUFs practical and also learning hardware design limitations of disorder based systems.

Book excerpt: The explosive growth of computing platforms such as the Internet of Things (IoT) which is an amalgamation of highly complex, heterogeneous and interconnected hardware components has bridged the gap between the physical and the digital world. However, integrating such large number of devices involving humungous amounts of data has raised new system security concerns. Additionally, with an increasing globalization of semiconductor supply chain ecosystem ranging from gathering raw materials to manufacturing and testing, these electronic devices have become more vulnerable to external threats such as reverse engineering (RE), trojan insertion and side channel attacks due to the involvement of untrustworthy parties. Therefore, hardware security is becoming increasingly important for nearly all IoT platforms. While silicon-based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) hardware security solutions have been demonstrated in the past, there is still room for improvement particularly in terms of area overheads and energy consumption. Therefore, interest in exploring out-of-the-box security solutions involving novel materials and device properties has grown tremendously. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been intensely explored to mitigate these security challenges. This thesis demonstrates and discusses several innovative and area efficient hardware security primitives developed using unique properties of 2D-materials and their associated device phenomena. The thesis particularly focuses on implementing security primitives such as hardware camouflaging and true random number generators (TRNGs). In addition, the thesis provides an invaluable insight into the vulnerabilities of in-memory computing technology which can be manipulated to deliberate insert hardware trojan with a chip resulting in its severe malfunction. Finally, moving away from the hardware demonstrations, a new type of physically unclonable function (PUF) which exploits the spatiotemporal randomness found within the population of biological specimens such as T-cells is also presented. In the end, we address the constraints of this thesis at the current stage while presenting their mitigation strategies and offering futuristic perspective for enabling better and efficient hardware security primitives.

Electronic hardware security, in particular, has emerged as one of the most serious challenges due to electronic devices penetrating every aspect of our society. Furthermore, due to the trend in globalization, system integrators have had to deal with integrated circuit (IC)/intellectual property (IP) counterfeiting more than ever. These counterfeit hardware issues counterfeit hardware that have driven the need for more secure chip authentication, since traditional ID or key storage have been demonstrated to be vulnerable to various kinds of attacks. In addition, due to the need for highly secure electronic information systems, almost every important and valuable document or piece of data is stored/transferred in some type of encrypted form to prevent attackers from compromising privacy or stealing information for nefarious uses. High entropy random numbers from physical sources are a critical component in authentication and encryption processes within secure systems. Secure encryption is dependent on sources of truly random numbers for generating keys, and there is a need for an on chip random number generator to achieve adequate security. Furthermore, the Internet of Things (IoT) adopts a large number of these hardware based security and prevention solutions in order to securely exchange data in resource-efficient manner. Note that due to the nature of IoT systems, these networked devices are particularly vulnerable to attacks that involve physical manipulations. In this work, we have developed several methodologies of hardware based random functions in order to address the issues and enhance the security and trust of ICs. The methodologies proposed in this thesis include: a novel DRAM-based intrinsic Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) for system-level security and authentication along with analysis of the impact of various environmental conditions, particularly silicon aging; a DRAM remanence based True Random Number Generation (TRNG) to produce random sequences with a very low-cost overhead; a DRAM TRNG model using its startup value behavior for creating random bit streams; an efficient power-supply noise based TRNG model for generating an infinite number of random bits which has been evaluated as a cost effective technique; architectures and hardware security solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Since IoT devices are heavily resource-constrained, our proposed designs can alleviate the concerns and issues of establishing trustworthy and secure systems in an efficient and low-cost manner.
