Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hardening and Tempering of Steel: In Theory and Practice HE manufacture of steel is making rapid progress, and improvements and inventions follow one another without intermission. The union of science and practice has produced results scarcely dreamt of thirty years ago. The progress in metallurgy and the revolutions it has lately undergone, which have stirred up every section of it, have become so important, that the iron and steel industries would seem to have ex changed the symbol oi Mars for that of Saturn, who swallowed his own children. This progress we owe to science, which is represented by an excellent technical literature of the subject. This literature becomes very scanty, however, where manu facture ceases and the Working up of the manufactured product begins. But this branch also requires the support of theory. It is scarcely necessary to point out that the trades which have made the most progress are those which have most sought the advice of science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Treatment of Steel: Hardening, Tempering, Case-Hardening In general, any change in the composition of a steel results in some change in its properties. For example, the addition of certain metallic elements to a carbon steel causes, in the alloy steel thus formed, a change in position of the proper hardening temperature point. Tungsten or manganese tend to lower this point, boron and vanadium to raise it; the amount of the change is practically proportional to the amount of the element added. Just as a small proportion of carbon added to iron produces steel which has decidedly different-properties than those found in pure iron, so increasing the proportion of carbon in the steel thus formed, within certain limits, causes a variation in the degree in which these properties manifest themselves. For example, consider the property of tensile strength. In a ten-point carbon steel (one in which there is present but per cent of, carbon) the tensile strength is very nearly 25 per cent greater than that of pure iron. Adding more carbon causes the tensile strength to rise, approximately, at the rate of per cent for each per cent of carbon added. Carbon steels are divided into three classes according to the propor tion of carbon which they contain. The first of these embraces the unsaturated' steels, in which the carbon content is lower than per cent; the second, the saturated steels, in which the proportion of carbon is exactly per cent; and, the third, the supersaturated steels, in which the carbon content is higher than per cent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardening, Tempering, Annealing and Forging of Steel: A Treatise on the Practical Treatment and Working of High and Low Grade Steel In preparing this treatise the author has had as an incitement the knowledge that there was very little information to be had on the treatment and working of steel of practical value to the gen eral mechanic. For this reason he is convinced that a practical book on the treatment and working of the metal as modern de mands necessitate, that is, in regard to heating, annealing, forg ing, hardening and tempering processes, cannot fail to prove of interest and value to all mechanics who use tools or who are in any way engaged in the working of metals. When the fact is considered that tools made from the best grades of steel will not perform the work required unless they have been treated properly during the various heating processes, the value of a knowledge of the most satisfactory and approved arrangements and methods to the mechanic is at once apparent. With the object in view of giving to practical men a book treating and presenting this paramount subject in a clear, con cise and practical manner, the author has drawn upon a personal experience of many years, gathered all the information obtain able, eliminating all unnecessary and obsolete matter, and added all that is approved, up-to-date and authentic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forge-Practice and Heat Treatment of Steel Modern demands on the finished products of steel have necessitated rapid strides in the art of heat treatment of the metal. As the subjects of forging, hardening, tempering and annealing are so closely correlated it has seemed wise to add to Forge Practice a certain amount of material devoted to the other branches of the art. The introduction of heat measuring and hardness testing instruments, together with various other modern appliances, and up to date systems of doing work have made necessary a broader knowledge of heat-treating methods than was formerly the case: for after all the most important factor is the man doing the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management of Steel, Including Forging, Hardening, Tempering, Annealing, Shrinking, and Expansion: Also the Case-Hardening of Iron Steel being one of the most valuable metals and requiring great care in the forging, hardening, tem pering, annealing, and management of it in general, I think, after having had nearly twenty years' good practice, experience, and study combined, I am now able to. Give a little information to those who have not had so much to do with it as I have. All that I here state is from my own practical experience; and by following the plans I shall here give, the artist will meet with every success. There are many people who, for the want of a little useful knowledge on steel, refrain from making many a good tool, because they say it is sure to crack in hardening; but if the steel is good, and has not been spoilt in forging the article, then, by following my plans they never need be afraid that it will be a waster. There are tons of the very best steel condemned as bad steel - when at the same time it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment of Steel IT has long been acknowledged that a small practical work upon the forging, annealing, -_hard oning, and tempering of steel, and the case-harden ing of iron, etc., was wanting amongst us; and it was with the object of assisting to supply this want, that I contributed my mite in publishing and giving my experience in the small work on the Management of Steel. How far my efforts have succeeded in supplying this want, I am not about to say but the flattering reception and high praise it has received in passing through three editions, has induced me to issue a much larger work in a revised form. I gave it the title of The Man agement of Steel when I published the first edi tion, simply because I could think of no other better and I continue the name because I am still unable to think of one more suitable. In this present attempt, my aim has been to write a work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Amply illustrated and deeply detailed, this classic guide details the creation of grades of steel via heat treatments. It offers fascinating insight into metal manufacturing processes. Since this guidebook was published in 1914, it carries a certain historic value; at the time, the United States economy was undergoing industrialization. Steel was in high demand, and the technology behind its manufacture was improved upon greatly. The metal's importance could not be understated; the expanding rail networks, new multistory constructions, plus tools and factory machines all required huge quantities of quality metal. As we learn, steel is not a simple product: various grades must be achieved via subtle variations in the heat and techniques applied during its manufacture. To articulate his points, the author appends over ninety charts and diagrams of equipment. Together these show how the furnaces work, and how the hardness of the metal is varied to meet strict specifications. Certain intense processes receive their own chapter, such as steel for machine tools and the use of the electric furnace, plus alloys and the testing of the finished products. For its breadth of detail and superb understanding, Erik Oberg's work remains readable over a century since its original publication.
