Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong's oldest Western cemetery garden is located in Happy Valley. This history and tour highlights the need for urgent action to conserve the built and natural heritage resources of this important cultural landscape. The author challenges the reader to reconsider the basic approach to heritage conservation adopted in Hong Kong where a false dichotomy persists between natural and built heritage conservation initiatives. The Hong Kong Cemetery provides an excellent example of a precious cultural landscape which is deteriorating because simplistic approaches to site management have failed to understand and protect the complex interrelationship between the natural (flora mid fauna - habitats) and built (monuments and Memorials) heritage resources. The first-three chapters introduce the cemetery garden concept as it evolved in early nineteenth century Europe, and was eventually established in Hong Kong by the British.-The second half of the book provides a self-guided tour of the cemetery highlighting its resources as well as explaining the main conservation problems and possible solutions to protect the cemetery.

Book excerpt: Happy Valley College will resonate with baby boomers that attended college during the Vietnam War and that dealt with the angst, uncertainties and challenges emanating from that crazy period in time. It is at once a feel good story about college life in the 60’s, ala “Animal House” and some of the cynicism of The Catcher in the Rye, but with a strong undercurrent of the Vietnam War and the emotions of a college student dealing with the military draft. College adventures are juxtaposed with war horrors of death and amputation. The reader will remember Dave Pedersen for his wealth and breadth of college and growing up experiences, and for the pain, frustration and anxiety while wrestling with options to meet his military service obligation in a way that preserves his relationship with a fellow college coed. Happy Valley College takes the reader on a journey of transition from the early carefree years of college to the realities of the Vietnam War and military draft. The story takes place at a small state college in northern California, far from the urban centers and large university hotbeds of anti-war activity. While unintended, the story also brings to light many similarities between the Vietnam War and the War in Iraq. Younger readers will gain an understanding and appreciation of the military draft system in place in the 1960’s, while baby boomers will experience a mix of refreshing nostalgia and quiet reflection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, Alan, Patrick, and Guinevere-"the Trio"-became the best of friends while stealing from Checker's Casual Cafe, the busiest restaurant in town. But the trio didn't just take money-what happened in '91 was no less than diabolical. Cicadas attacked customers, out-of-hand pranks collapsed the kitchen ceiling, and the Phantom of the Restaurant brought havoc to the dining room-all against a background of blaring eighties music. Sharon Donovan, the restaurant's general manager, was literally ready to kill someone when police were finally called. Fifteen years later, Guinevere is mortally wounded in a horrific car accident. As Alan and Patrick rush to her side, her deathbed confession is chilling: "The worst thing about my depression is that it has a sense of humor." In her dying breath, Gwen asks Alan to take care of Stephanie, her teenage daughter-"As you once took care of me, when we all worked together at Checker's." And as Steph brings back memories of the best time in his life, Alan makes a very bad decision... But karma is a bitch, and Patrick's arrest on returning to his Nevada home makes national news. His frantic cry for help sends Alan and Stephanie on a cross-country trip-where evidence reveals a disturbing connection between the Trio that began years before Checker's. It's eerie how current events mirror those from decades ago, and past-and-present stories play out side by side. Without Alan's help, Patrick will go to prison...but as Sharon Donovan learned the hard way, it's often those you trust the most who blindside you with their behaviors... No matter how far you run, the past will always catch up with you. And once it does, it will serve a dish best cold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamboree! To many country music fans the word conjures up memories of Saturday nights around the family radio listening to live broadcasts from that haven of hillbilly music, West Virginia. From 1926 through the 1950s, as Ivan Tribe shows in his lively history, country music radio programming made the Mountain State a mecca for country singers and instrumentalists from all over America. Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, Little Jimmy Dickens, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Red Sovine, Blaine Smith, Curly Ray Cline, Grandpa Jones, Cowboy Loye, Rex and Eleanor Parker, Lee Moore, Buddy Starcher, Doc and Chickie Williams, and Molly O'Day were among the many who came to prominence via West Virginia radio. Wheeling's "WWVA jamboree," first broadcast in 1933, attracted a wide audience, especially after 1942, when the station increased its power. The show's success spawned numerous competitors, as new stations all over West Virginia followed WWVA's lead in headlining country music. The state also played an important role in the early recording industry. The Tweedy Brothers, Frank Hutchison, Roy Harvey, Blind Alfred Reed, Frank Welling and John McGhee, Cap and Andy, and the Kessinger Brothers were among West Virginians whose waxings contributed to the state's reputation for fine native musicianship. So too did those who sought out and recorded the Mountaineer folksong heritage. As Nashville's dominance has grown since the 1960s, West Virginia's leadership in country music has lessened. Young performers must now seek fame outside their native state. But, as Ivan Tribe demonstrates, the state's numerous outdoor festivals continue to keep alive the heritage of country music's "mountain mama."
