This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his 36-year career in the Canadian Army, the author saw some wonderful sights and met hundreds of interesting people, some of whom appear in this collection of anecdotes. From the first sergeant major at cadet camp to the witty and erudite professor at the staff college, they all enlightened and amused the impressive youngster who grew into an ancient and, at times, cynical old colonel. Along the way there were adventures galore at places with unusual names: Canoe River, the Imjin, Shilo, Kophinou and at others better known: England, Labrador, Ottawa and Washington. Those adventures are the stuff of stories that old soldiers tell when they gather in the mess and the emphasis is on the good times. These are the stories.

Download or read book Killer Kane written by Andrew R. Finlayson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-09-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leader of one of the most successful U. S. Marine long range reconnaissance teams during the Vietnam War, Andrew Finlayson recounts his team's experiences in the year leading up to the Tet Offensive of 1968. Using primary sources, such as Marine Corps unit histories and his own weekly letters home, he presents a highly personal account of the dangerous missions conducted by this team of young Marines as they searched for North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong units in such dangerous locales as Elephant Valley, the Enchanted Forest, Charlie Ridge, Happy Valley and the Que Son Mountains. In numerous close contacts with the enemy, the team (code-name Killer Kane) fights for its survival against desperate odds, narrowly escaping death time and again. The book gives vivid descriptions of the life of recon Marines when they are not on patrol, the beauty of the landscape they traverse, and several of the author's Vietnamese friends. It also explains in detail the preparations for, and the conduct of, a successful long range reconnaissance patrol.
Book Synopsis Never Without Heroes by : Lawrence C. Vetter, Jr.
Download or read book Never Without Heroes written by Lawrence C. Vetter, Jr. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOUR CONGRESSIONAL MEDALS OF HONOR, THIRTEEN NAVAL CROSSES, SEVENTY-TWO SILVER STARS . . . In four and a half years in Vietnam, the Marines of the Third Reconnaissance Battalion repeatedly penetrated North Vietnamese and Vietcong sanctuaries by foot and by helicopter to find enemy forces, learn the enemy's intentions, and, when possible, bring deadly fire down on his head. Heavily armed, well-camouflaged teams of six and eight men daily exposed themselves to overwhelming enemy forces so that other Marines would have the information necessary to fight the war. It's all here: grueling, tense, and deadly recon patrols; insertions directly into NVA basecamps; last-stand defenses in the wreckage of downed helicopters; pursuit by superior North Vietnamese forces; agonizing deaths of men who valiantly put their lives on the line. NEVER WITHOUT HEROES is the first book to recount the story of a Marine reconnaissance battalion in Vietnam from the day of its arrival to its withdrawal. In Vietnam, Larry Vetter served as a platoon leader in Third Recon Battalion. He supplements his own recollections with Marine Corps records, exhaustive interviews with veterans, and correspondence to capture the bravery, and self-sacrifice of war.

The mystery was eventually solved—after the death of the murderer. Download or read book We Marines written by Edward (Ned) Black and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam era was a time of turmoil and change in the United States, one of anger and anguish for some; especially among young men facing a call up for military service. Writings about this time have focused mostly on the protest viewpoint. But not everyone who went to Vietnam did so against their will. Many were proud to fight for their country, especially the early war cadre of troops, mostly in the Marine Corps, who were all volunteers. It was what they had joined up and trained for, and they were determined to do their duty wherever it took them. The name of the place did not matter, what mattered was that the Corps told them to go. WE MARINES, is the authors experience in the military from age seventeen to twenty-three. A young man who wanted to be a Marine, and served in peace time, the Cuban Crisis, and Vietnam. He didn’t mind going into combat with his buddies, and when his overseas rotation was up volunteered a second time to stay with them. WE MARINES, deals with our involvement in Vietnam in 1965-66 offering a personal view of the war and its aftermath too often ignored, until now. It is written especially for his family and those who were there.
Book Synopsis Recovering Police Legitimacy by : Rafe McGregor
Download or read book Recovering Police Legitimacy written by Rafe McGregor and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic policing is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of legitimacy, epitomised by public responses to the murders of George Floyd and Sarah Everard during the COVID-19 pandemic. Legitimacy is lost when the police either fail to protect the public or rely on coercion rather than consent to achieve that protection. Recovering Police Legitimacy challenges conventional criminological, political, and public solutions to the problem by approaching it from the bottom up, beginning with policing as a practice constituted by a unique set of excellences, skills, and characteristics. The author draws on his experience as a police officer and on the serial fictions of James Ellroy, David Peace, and Nic Pizzolatto to characterise the practice in terms of heroic struggle, edgework, absolute sacrifice, and worldmaking. These characteristics provide an analytic tool for revolutionising our understanding of the relations among policing as a situated practice, public protection, and police legitimacy and for identifying the different levels at which legitimacy is undermined. His conclusion is that recovery is possible but will be slow in pace and incomplete in scope. Written accessibly for students, police officers, policymakers, scholars, and anyone with an interest in police legitimacy, this is a groundbreaking study of a pressing social problem.
