Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, emotional teaching-learning is explored as it is cultivated based on teachers’ and learners’ attraction to reasonableness and emotions and can give rise to a plausible form of decoloniality or decolonisation in and through education. It is argued that when the latter manifests, the democratic transformation of education might ensue. Put differently, decoloniality and/or decolonisation of education is a substantive way to look at the democratisation and, by implication, transformation of education and schooling. Readers are invited to engage with the meanings espoused throughout this book in the quest to cultivate a genuinely decolonial form of education in universities and schools, where values education should be enacted reasonably and emotively in such educational institutions. Teachers and learners cannot remain silent when oppressive and hegemonic forces of modernity continue to guide educational practices in institutions. Contributors are: Ahoud Alasfour, N’Dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba, Emiliano Bosio, José Brás, Juan Carlos Rodriguez Camacho, Michael Cottrell, Lucimar Dantas, Amanda Fiore, Carla Galego, Maria Neves Gonçalves, Logan Govender, Beatriz Koppe, Sibonokuhle Ndlovu, Phefumula Nyoni, Adaobiagu Nnemdi Obiagu, Peter Oyewole, Theresa A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on an ethnographic study of novel readers in Denmark and the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic, this book provides a snapshot of a phenomenal moment in modern history. The ethnographic approach shows what no historical account of books published during the pandemic will be able to capture, namely the movement of readers between new purchases and books long kept in their collections. The book follows readers who have tuned into novels about plague, apocalypse, and racial violence, but also readers whose taste for older novels, and for re-reading novels they knew earlier in their lives, has grown. Alternating between chapters that analyse single texts that were popular (Albert Camus's The Plague, Ali Smith's Summer, Charlotte Brönte's Jane Eyre) and others that describe clusters of, for example, dystopian fiction and nature writing, this work brings out the diverse quality of the Covid-19 bookshelf. Time is of central importance to this study, both in terms of the time of lockdown and the temporality of reading itself within this wider disrupted sense of time. By exploring these varied experiences, this book investigates the larger question of how the consumption of novels depends on and shapes people's experience of non-work time, providing a specific lens through which to examine the phenomenology of reading more generally. This timely work also negotiates debates in the study of reading that distinguish theoretically between critical reading and reading for pleasure, between professional and lay reading. All sides of the sociological and literary debate must be brought to bear in understanding what readers tell us about what novels have meant to them in this complex historical moment.

Book excerpt: This is my third book written during COVID-19 pandemic where I continued to serve unceasing as a practicing Neurosurgeon, Anesthesiologist, Intensivist and Pain Specialist in the Chicago land area. Despite the extreme negative impact of COVID-19 worldwide, I kept daily dairy of my thoughts, reflections and patients stories over a year since June 2021! As I kept writing, while the world is being flooded with the deadly virus and dreadful news, I saw the rainbows in the shadows of COVID-19. As in the days of Noah thousands of years ago after the deadly flood of the world and God covenant with man through the rainbow so is the current days of COVID-19, a renewal of the covenant between the Almighty God the Lord and the people. The current book shares my rainbows in the shadows of COVID-19 as follow up series of the author two books of COVID-19.The book divides into 20 sections and contains total off 194 chapters. The book designates major sections on my continuing education and wellbeing of my residents and students as well as Neurosurgical patients and inspired stories during late phases of COVID. It covers most of the ongoing thoughts and essential events from October 2020 through July 2021 during the COVID recovery phase such as Thanksgiving, Presidential Election and Inauguration, Christmas, New Year, riots and Vaccination. Another section is written to pay tribute to those sacrificed their lives and stood strong against the most horrific virus in the front line.
