Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this lovely, easy-to-use illustrated guide to decluttering, the beloved author of The Happiness Project shows us how to take control of our stuff—and, by extension, our lives. Gretchen Rubin knows firsthand that creating order can make our lives happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. But for most of us, a rigid, one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. When we tailor our approach to suit our own particular challenges and habits, we can find inner calm. With a sense of fun, and a clear idea of what’s realistic for most people, Rubin suggests dozens of manageable tips and tricks for creating a more serene, orderly environment, including: • Never label anything “miscellaneous.” • Ask yourself, “Do I need more than one?” • Don’t aim for minimalism. • Remember: If you can’t retrieve it, you won’t use it. • Stay current with a child’s interests. • Beware the urge to “procrasticlear.” By getting rid of things we don’t use, don’t need, or don’t love, we free our minds (and our shelves) for what we truly value.

Download or read book THE DESIGNER written by Ralph J W Fischer and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we in a simulation? That’s a question Dax Sky often asked himself. Not surprising given he designs simulations, creating alternate realities indistinguishable from the real world. It is the 24th century and Dax lives in the former United States of America, ruled by China. He works for a government agency called SISAR that creates alternate reality simulations of the past and future. His wife, Mae, is an engineer at Photonviz Corporation, a company that builds devices located throughout the solar system that collect photons reflected from deep space originally emitted from Earth. The photons record every event that occurred in Earth’s history. SISAR uses the photon data to create the historical simulations used as the basis for its alternate history simulations. But Dax’s life is torn apart when he returns from an expedition to the ruins of eastern North America to discover Mae, missing. Taken from his world by a man who looks like him. Dax’s search for Mae will uncover incredible truths. But he must first learn the purpose of two mysterious, otherworldly objects whose origin trace back to the time of Christ’s birth. The objects belonged to a strange magus who saved the infant Christ from being killed by the Romans in the Slaughter of the Innocents. They were discovered by archeologists in Costa Rica, in the 21st century, and may be connected to a simulation Dax created—a world inexplicably entwined with his own reality. The novel is hard science fiction and alternate history fiction, in the tradition of books by authors like Philip K. Dick. It is also an adventure, mystery and time travel novel like classic science fiction books written by Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Themes explored by modern-day writers, including Stephen King, David Mitchell and Blake Crouch, are reimagined in The Designer. The Designer explores the nature of reality. And how myth and religion, theoretical and speculative physics, metaphysics and philosophy can come together to provide possible answers to the fundamental questions about the universe that have vexed human beings for millennia.

Book Synopsis Sensory Design by : Joy Monice Malnar
Download or read book Sensory Design written by Joy Monice Malnar and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if we designed for all of our senses? Suppose for a moment that sound, touch, and odor were treated as the equals of sight, and emotion considered as important as cognition. What would our built environment be like if sensory response, sentiment, and memory were critical design factors, the equals of structure and program? In Sensory Design, Joy Monice Malnar and Frank Vodvarka explore the nature of our responses to spatial constructs--from various sorts of buildings to gardens and outdoor spaces, to constructions of fantasy. To the degree that this response can be calculated, it can serve as a typology for the design of significant spaces, one that would sharply contrast with the Cartesian model that dominates architecture today. In developing this typology, the authors consult the environmental sciences, anthropology, psychology, and architectural theory, as well as the spatial analysis found in literary depiction. Finally, they examine the opportunities that CAVE and other immersive virtual reality technologies present in furthering a new, sensory-oriented design paradigm. The result is a new philosophy of design that both celebrates our sensuous occupation of the built environment and creates more humane design. A revolutionary approach to the built environment that embraces all of our senses and modes of understanding.
