Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in 1926 in a town in Silesia, Germanys south eastern Province bordering Poland to the east and Czechoslovakia to the south. That is how it was for 2000 years until 1945 when Hitlers war ended, and our Heimat Schlesien no longer existed. The peace treaty demanded that Silesia be annexed to Poland meaning the eviction of our people. Six months after my 17th birthday, shortly before Christmas 1943, I was called up to military service and after my training sent to Italy, where five months later, on Sunday 4th June 1944 I was captured by the U.S. Army just outside Rome. They brought us to Norfolk Virginia from where a train journey took us to a POW camp in Oklahoma, moving soon to Fort Bliss, El Paso. In autumn 1945 fifty POWs travelled by bus to the Napa Valley to pick tomatoes, prunes, and work in the vineyards, and after New Year 1946 south to pick cotton. In early March 1946 we received black-dyed U.S. Army uniforms, boarded a troop ship in Oakland and were sent back to Europe via the Panama Canal, to arrive three weeks later in Liverpool, UK. From there we travelled by train to the north of Scotland where now over sixty years later, I continue to live. My book will tell my journey.

Book excerpt: 'Records of a Girlhood' is the riveting autobiography of Fanny Kemble, a British actress from a famous theater family who became a prominent writer and abolitionist in the 19th century. Her memoirs, poetry, and travel writing captivated readers, but it was her journal documenting the conditions of enslaved people on her husband's plantations in the Sea Islands that cemented her historical importance. Through her firsthand accounts and growing abolitionist sentiments, Kemble sheds light on the harsh realities of slavery and the moral imperative to end it.

Download or read book We Are Still Married written by Garrison Keillor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Garrison Keillor made it possible, after twenty years of black humor…to be both funny and nice, hip and winsome, scathing and loving, all in the flick of a single many-barbed quip——The Washington Post Book World “Keillor’s literary style is as flexible and assured as his vocal delivery. It can slip from mood to mood so subtly and quickly you’re never quite sure where you are…. [His] writing has the silvery slip of running water, so graceful and easy it’s hard to believe it can carry so much that is jagged and unresolved. His integrity lies in his not smoothing away those rough edges in the swift current of his prose; they’re bruisingly, sometimes cuttingly there.” —The Village Voice
