Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder what the President does? Meet the 45* people who have held the job in this important book that showcases how they each led the country in their time—and features their own thoughts and words through their documents, letters, diaries, speeches and so much more. Some call it the most important job in the world. It's certainly the most powerful. And it's one that every citizen needs to know about because we're the ones who vote to put a president in office. Lively, informative, filled with firsts and facts, big ideas and compelling anecdotes, The Presidents Decoded, is a richly layered guide to the leaders who have shaped our nation. Featuring over 125 primary sources--including documents, speeches, letters, executive orders and diaries--each leader's time in office is broken down and explained to show the what, how and why of our leaders' thoughts, decisions and policies. Familiar documents like the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The Fugitive Slave Act — the part of the Compromise of 1850 that set the country on a path to Civil War — are included. But there's also George Washington’s letter to Martha as he learns that he’s been chosen to be the General of the Continental Army, a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt from a desperate family during the Great Depression, a letter from baseball legend Jackie Robinson urging John F. Kennedy to do more for civil rights, and the Executive Order limiting the hours of the federal work day, and so many more. Full-color illustrations bring each president and their time in office to life on the page in their career-defining moments as history marches forward and changes the job — and our way of life — through inventions like the camera, the telephone, the first metal detector, services like the Navy and the Red Cross, and the rise of social media platforms like Twitter. As she did in The Constitution Decoded, Katie Kennedy shines a light on American History, this time through the lens of the leaders who shaped our nation. (*Very clever of you to catch this! the number is off by 1 because Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and the 24th president!)

The writings are inspired from the Japanese art of ‘Kintsugi,’ which is the technique of using gold, silver or platinum to fix broken pottery. Book excerpt: Happiness Decoded - A Book to Crucify Negativity to stay in a Good Mood Happiness Decoded (HD) starts by giving a precise definition of happiness which simplifies what needs to be done to stay happy. It is built around the theory of the Eight Cs which identifies things you need to let go of and things you need to inculcate to attain a positive state of mind which is not easily disturbed. In the eight chapters dedicated to the eight Cs there are various examples to help the readers understand how a C affects their life and how they can handle it to stay in a good mood most of the times. In the second part of the book, Anirudh talks about how, after being surrounded by negativity due to attacks of psychosis, he successfully applied various points of the theory in his life to become a happy person again. The last part of the book consists of exercises which give you guidance in adopting a systematic approach in your battle for the fort of happiness. HD has many practical tips to help people stop negative self talk as the author has first-hand experience of how it screws your life; and knows how you can change your thinking to overcome it. Among other things, Anirudh tells you how to stop complaining and provides an effective alternative to the ludicrous habit. There is also stress on how to achieve a state of mind which allows you to be in the moment. Happiness Decoded will make you introspect; help you identify the reasons which are making it difficult for you to be a positive person; and give you simple but effective tips on how to be happy again. But, of course, as is stated in the book, you are the king of your universe and in the end it is you and only you who can change your world. If you sense someone has been engulfed by negativity and you want to help that person get out of that state of mind by giving him/her tips on how to think positive, then too this book will prove invaluable to you. After reading it you will easily be able to spot the reasons behind that person's negative attitude. This is what makes HD stand out. It will make it clear to you why people find it difficult to be happy when happiness can easily be attained; and thereby you will be able to decipher the simple secrets of happiness. A Note from the Author: - Some people say happiness is a state of mind and you can be happy no matter what. Well, maybe it is true for them but no one I have ever met is perpetually happy. Attaining a state of mind where nothing matters to you will probably make you a sage. I am no one to define what happiness means to an individual as it may differ from person to person. But according to me you can't be happy if nothing affects you. Among other things, you may become wise and contented in such a scenario but not happy in my book. I am not a sage, nor am I working towards becoming one. So I can't help you in that regard. People who think 'true happiness' is different from happiness and are looking for spiritual guidance should look elsewhere and so should people who think success is essential for a person to stay positive. I am neither spiritual nor am I successful. But I am a guy who went through hell because of attacks of psychosis. I have been there: engulfed by negative thoughts and unable to break free. I know how your whole life gets fucked up due to that pathetic state of mind. After realizing how negative thoughts were adversely affecting me, I decided to fight and during my quest to become a positive person again, I believe I cracked the happiness code. In this book I have put forward a simple theory which makes it clear how to stop negative thinking and maximize your happiness quotient despite the shit you face in life. I am happy and I know it and I really what to show why.

What if you have just suffered a severe loss or many losses? Where do you turn when everything you've worked so hard to build up suddenly and completely falls apart? A Place Called Happiness, while understanding that circumstances and events of our lives can be anywhere from mildly difficult to brutalizing, nevertheless affirms a permanent pathway to a state of overriding contentment. In this concise, readable book, Dr. Dori Seider allows us to encounter, gently yet powerfully, the internal barriers that keep us from our own happiness. She helps us to define a new approach that will invite our contentment in, ask it to stay longer, and make it feel so at home that it will return to us more often. The book is divided into four parts: Losing Your Happiness, Changing Your Mind, Finding Your Truth, and Loving Your Life. Dr. Seider insists that even in a very troubled world it is possible for each of us to create an enduring sense of well-being, and she shows us how.

After experiencing multiple devastating events, Ling spent years studying the science of happiness and focused on identifying and testing specific emotional support tools. During this process, she discovered something that goes against everything we've been lead to believe about happiness: it isn't just something you feel; it's something you do. Based on this discovery, Ling narrowed down the road to happiness to three powerful steps: Change Your View, Change Your Mornings, and create new habits, the foundational principles for Operation Happiness. Part memoir and part how-to, Operation Happiness combines compelling personal stories, inspiring perspective shifts, and big ah-ha moments with specific how-to's and clear actionable steps to help you create a solid foundation for sustainable happiness that will propel you into a new, light-filled way of living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Formula for Happiness is a self-help book which popularizes cutting-edge discoveries made by a board certified clinical psychologist about the nature of happiness and the behaviors and beliefs which enable people to become and remain happy. His groundbreaking way of understanding life and how to live has attracted worldwide attention since it was originally introduced to the scientific community in New Ideas in Psychology: an international journal of innovative theory in psychology in 1996. This is a peer reviewed journal produced by the worlds largest publisher of original scientific work and overseen by an editorial board consisting of faculty from departments of psychology in several of the worlds leading universities. The Formula for Happiness presents this paradigm for the pursuit of happiness in a format which is entertaining and easily understood. It familiarizes readers with what they need to become and remain happy and how to proceed with their personal pursuit of happiness. Readers are provided with an objective means of measuring current levels of happiness as well as methods for increasing happiness and forecasting the effect potential courses of action are likely to have on their happiness at some future point in time. The Formula for Happiness is the product of an innovative approach to the study of happiness which incorporates and surpasses research currently going on in the field of positive psychology in a number of important ways. It is based on generalizations emerging from the review of massive amounts of positive psychology research integrated with insights into the nature of happiness emerging from the fields of clinical and developmental psychology. It provides a comprehensive and coherent set of propositions about the nature of happiness which is different from anything available elsewhere in scientific and self-help literature today. The Formula for Happiness is the first solidly scientifically-based self-help book to assert that happiness is primarily a matter of how people are situated with respect to the circumstances of their lives. Beyond making this assertion, it actually specifies exactly which circumstances make a difference in the of quality of human life. It precisely identifies what we require in order to become and remain happy. The Formula for Happiness is also the first solidly scientifically-based self-help book to assert that happiness is a matter of choice. In addition to advancing this proposition, it provides readers with the only set of scientifically formulated guidelines for making choices which have happiness as their effect. It is the first book to present a set of principles for the pursuit of happiness which, like the principles of nutrition and health, are the product of scientific reasoning and research. In showing readers how happiness is mainly a matter of circumstances and that circumstances are largely a matter of choice, The Formula for Happiness provides a new and much needed counterpoint to most of the thinking within psychology as well as much of what is available on the self-help market today. Instead of promoting the notion that happiness is a matter of what we think, how we perceive, or how we interpret things, The Formula for Happiness shows readers how quality of life is a matter of the way things really are and what we actually do. It is the first self-help book to provide a blueprint for constructing a durable high quality life. In addition to presenting a pioneering paradigm for the pursuit of happiness, The Formula for Happiness contains a set of newly developed psychometric instruments. Readers can use these instruments to measure happiness, to develop goals for personal strategic planning, and to make momentous decisions such as what to major in at college, which career to pursue, whether to take a particular job, whether to remain in a romantic relationship, whether to get married, whether

Book excerpt: What exactly is happiness? Can we measure it? Why are some people happy and others not? And is there a drug that could eliminate all unhappiness? People all over the world, and throughout the ages, have thought about happiness, argued about its nature, and, most of all, desired it. But why do we have such a strong instinct to pursue happiness? And if happiness is good in itself, why haven't we simply evolved to be happier? Daniel Nettle uses the results of the latest psychological studies to ask what makes people happy and unhappy, what happiness really is, and to examine our urge to achieve it. Along the way we look at brain systems, at mind-altering drugs, and how happiness is now marketed to us as a commodity. Nettle concludes that while it may be unrealistic to expect lasting happiness, our evolved tendency to seek happiness drives us to achieve much that is worthwhile in itself. What is more, it seems to be not your particular circumstances that define whether you are happy so much as your attitude towards life. Happiness gives us the latest scientific insights into the nature of our feelings of well-being, and what these imply for how we might live our lives.
