Book excerpt: Hannah is 5 1⁄2 years old when her parents are hit head-on by a drunk driver, leaving her at the mercy of her father’s estranged cousin, Thomas. He is only after the life insurance that has been left to Hannah by her parents. He also holds another secret, the secret about a family ranch which should, by all rights, be half Hannah’s. This secret leads Thomas to resent Hannah. Carrie Ann, Thomas’s wife, and Erik, Thomas’s son, are now expected to take care of this little girl, and they greatly resent having this responsibility thrown at them. This leads them to abuse and neglect Hannah. Hannah is forced to learn the rules of surviving in this new environment, but as she becomes a teenager the rules change. As her body changes Erik takes notice and he takes advantage. Through all of the terrible abuse, there have been angels placed in her path to help her survive. Then two horrible events take place. First: the only friends she has had are kidnapped. Second, the abuse becomes more than she can handle. Hannah is pushed to the point of giving up when an old friend, Light Foot, finds her. He stays by her side through the healing process and is committed to helping her recover. Light Foot, who is doing an internship with the Forest Service at Yellowstone National Park, doesn’t realize that helping Hannah means he is putting his own life in danger. He is forced to go on the run. Choosing to run to the trails in Yellowstone, that he is so familiar with, and praying for help, he is saved by bears. Hannah’s story takes you through real abuse and the emotionally charged situations that come from it. Hannah’s climb is unique in the fact that it contains real hypnotherapy sessions. Sessions that have worked with my clients. Sessions that have brought some of the most amazing outcomes. In the end, Hannah learns to climb out of her old life and find greater heights in a beautiful new world.

She got the job of her dreams, the house of her dreams, and the man of her dreams. But there was always something missing. Hannah never knew anything about her family. Her mother had never been much help in that regard. She knew vaguely where her mother had grown up, but that was about it. A little sleuthing reveals her mother's hometown, but instead of finding answers about her past, Hannah only finds more questions. What secrets lie in the little town in the Ozarks? What shameful events from the past will the return of a long-lost daughter bring to the surface?

Unexpected tragedy has left Hannah without her soldier husband and a home for her baby son, Jamie. Seeking refuge, she comes to live with her aunt in Pleasant Valley, a place she hasn’t seen since childhood, when her parents left the Mennonite faith. Working in her aunt’s bakery is a way for Hannah to get back on her feet, but she isn’t sure if she can live by tradition—or if she and Jamie should stay for good. She finds an unexpected sympathetic listener in furniture maker William Brand. His stutter makes him feel like a permanent outsider in his Amish community, and he understands her loneliness. Hannah is irresistibly drawn to the shy, caring William, and her education in speech therapy makes it natural for her to want to help him speak more easily. But how can she encourage his attention when she might someday leave Pleasant Valley, and when her father-in-law, a military officer, is scheming to take Jamie away from her? As William seeks the courage to stand up for the woman who believes in him, Hannah must decide where her true home lies—in the free, ever-changing world she knows, or in the simpler, loving community she’s found...

She strives to be the one person who can bind the threads of her family together in spite of her mother's ongoing depression and her sister's rejection of their family. But her world is threatening to unravel. When two young men seek her hand in marriage--one offering the home she craves and the other promising the adventure of following God's call west--Hannah must make a choice. Faithfully perform her duties to her family? Or defy her father and abandon her community? With a tender hand, Jan Drexler teases out the threads of a romance that will captivate readers in this brand-new Amish historical series.
