Book excerpt: For decades the high walls of Winchester Prison have contained some of the country's most infamous criminals. Until hanging was abolished in the 1960s it was also the main center of execution for those convicted in Hampshire. Among the executions carried out here was the hanging of soldier Abraham Goldenberg for the murder of a bank clerk; William Podmore, hanged in 1930 after killing a garage owner in Southampton; and two Polish refugees who murdered a have-a-go hero during a bungled bank robbery. Winchester was also the site of the last triple execution in Britain, when a Teignmouth coachman, a Southampton laborer and an eighteen-year-old rifleman based at Aldershot were hanged together for three unrelated crimes. Fully illustrated with photographs news cuttings and engravings, Hanged at Winchester features each of the cases in one volume for the first time and is sure to appeal to everyone interested in the shadier side of Hampshire's history.

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century following the Civil War, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia legally executed hundreds of men and women convicted of capital crimes. Based on exhaustive research of court records, newspapers death certificates and even gravestones, this book provides the essential details of each case. Arranged by state, entries for each execution are listed in chronological order, giving the name, race and age of the prisoner and a description of the crime of which he or she was convicted. The motive, if known, the date and place of the execution, and relevant sources are also included. Appendices provide preliminary lists of executions in these states before 1866, including some cases dating back to the 17th century. A significant number of hitherto undiscovered executions, further reveals that America's experience with capital punishment is more extensive than previously known.

Book Synopsis Harnessing the Power of the Criminal Corpse by : Sarah Tarlow
Download or read book Harnessing the Power of the Criminal Corpse written by Sarah Tarlow and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the culmination of many years of research on what happened to the bodies of executed criminals in the past. Focusing on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it looks at the consequences of the 1752 Murder Act. These criminal bodies had a crucial role in the history of medicine, and the history of crime, and great symbolic resonance in literature and popular culture. Starting with a consideration of the criminal corpse in the medieval and early modern periods, chapters go on to review the histories of criminal justice, of medical history and of gibbeting under the Murder Act, and ends with some discussion of the afterlives of the corpse, in literature, folklore and in contemporary medical ethics. Using sophisticated insights from cultural history, archaeology, literature, philosophy and ethics as well as medical and crime history, this book is a uniquely interdisciplinary take on a fascinating historical phenomenon.

Book Synopsis Trial of Frederick Baker by : David F. Green

Book excerpt: On 24 August 1867, the remains of eight-year-old Fanny Adams were discovered in a hop field close to her home in Alton, Hampshire. She had been decapitated and horribly mutilated; her limbs and internal organs were scattered over a wide area. It was butchery on a truly colossal scale. Local solicitor's clerk Frederick Baker was quickly apprehended and committed for trial at the winter assizes in Winchester. Few people doubted that he was solely responsible for the murder of little Fanny Adams. Baker was a decidedly odd character, often seen skulking around town exhibiting a range of morbid and eccentric behaviours. His corpse-white complexion and black top hat composed his trademark appearance. This book charts his upbringing, his family life and career, and his depraved emotional and sexual impulses, fully exploring his progression from a weak and sensitive child to a swaggering, intemperate monster. Legal opinion was divided: was Baker mentally deranged, or was he a cunning, cold-blooded and wicked individual fully in command of his faculties? These issues would be examined in the courtroom, and in a sense, medical science itself, with its new ideas about psychological disease, homicidal mania and criminal responsibility, was also on trial. The defence offered a confusing and contradictory double plea of Not Guilty but also Guilty and Insane. The jury rejected both defences, and Baker was hanged outside Winchester prison on Christmas Eve in front of a large crowd. Baker has received remarkably little attention in the extensive literature on Victorian crime. Drawing on Home Office files and making use of a wide selection of local history materials, Trial of Frederick Baker tells for the first time the full story of the murder of Fanny Adams and the trial and conviction of one of Britain's most appalling villains.

Download or read book Billington written by Alison Bruce and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘An insightful and gripping account that will take you into the dark but fascinating world of a Victorian executioner.’ – Stewart P. Evans Between 1884 and 1905 James Billington and his three sons, Thomas, William and John, were responsible for 235 executions in Victorian Great Britain and Ireland. They hanged many notorious murderers, but equally fascinating is the story of the family. Did James really feel he served society and justice, or did this position satisfy something more personal? Billington: Victorian Executioner provides a complete account of the stories behind James Billington’s executions, as well as the real man behind the rope – a man whose business was death. This enthralling biography is an exciting addition to any true crime bookshelf.
