Book excerpt: Harry Pierpont and John Dillinger were die-hard and deadly partners who made national headlines with their daring bank hold-ups and gun battles -- and they had a lot of laughs while they were at it. They were known as the Dillinger Gang but at its heart was "Handsome Harry" Pierpont -- tough, fearless, intelligent, and sworn to live by no law but his own. Presented as his intimate "confessions," Harry's story takes us from his teenage days as a small-time crook to his fateful meeting with the equally young Dillinger to the pinnacle of his notoriety, and to his final hours in the penitentiary death house. Crafted in James Carlos Blake's signature style of fast-paced violence, sizzling sex, and darkly raucous humor, Handsome Harry re-creates a thrilling chapter from the chronicles of American crime.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Sports She Wrote series presents a trilogy of influential books on 19th-century equestrianism written by women from 1884 to 1893, with more than 100 illustrations, providing readers a window into the world of horsemanship in the Victorian Era. Elizabeth Karr's The American Horsewoman (1884) proudly states that hers is the first book exclusively for women riders written by an American woman. C. De Hurst's How Women Should Ride (1892) is a foundational guide covering essential aspects of horse riding and management with practical lessons for aspiring riders. Alice M. Hayes's The Horsewoman (1893) weaves personal anecdotes and adventurous tales, offering a captivating glimpse into the life of a 19th-century equestrienne. All three books in this trilogy (160,000 words) depict women riding side-saddle, capturing a moment in history when the debate over women riding astride was in its infancy. The side-saddle, symbolic of femininity during this era, adds an intriguing layer to the narratives, showcasing the evolving role of women in the equestrian world. Despite this antiquated perspective, much of the information in the books regarding riding and caring for horses remains relevant today. Two additional volumes about equestrianism in the Sports She Wrote series are Equestrian Reports and Nannie Lambert O’Donoghue. Other volumes with equestrian articles include Diana’s Outdoor Sports; Women on the Hunt; and Adelia Brainerd, The Outdoor Woman of Harper’s Bazar. Sports She Wrote is a 31-volume time-capsule of primary documents written by more than 500 women in the 19th century.

Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Book excerpt: From the high profile and popular journalist Angela Mollard, this is a wholly delightful, funny and charming book - part memoir, part how-to manual - about giving your kids a real childhood. Childhood, Mum had once said to me, is not preparation for life, it is life. But in the tussle between home and work I'd forgotten what a privilege it is to be a parent - to have in my hands and heart two small souls I have for only a short time to guide and teach and enjoy. If I pressed on, driven by deadlines and bosses and a stultifying work ethic, then I would miss everything that really mattered. As a journalist, Angela Mollard never left home without her passport, contact lenses and a spare pair of knickers - not because she was incontinent but in case she had to drop everything and fly overseas for a story. But then she had a baby, and this new hand luggage was as compatible with her job as a ham and jam sandwich. By the time one child became two, work was seeping into every corner of her life and turning her into the sort of person she loathed. She was suffering an integrity crisis. Yet what she wanted was quite simple - time to enjoy her children, sufficient cash to keep everyone in food, nappies and wine, and the energy to be a half-decent wife. So why was it all so hard? From popular columnist and commentator, Angela Mollard, comes the story of how she learned to aim wide, not high, and to enjoy her children again. Part memoir, part manual, the Smallest things is for all parents trying to reconcile their various roles and create a childhood for their kids that incorporates both Minecraft and the Famous Five. Offering parents ideas and hope (plus plenty of parenting pitfalls to make them feel better about their own), the Smallest things is a funny, charming and movingly candid story of putting family first, and why the smallest things in life matter the most.

Book excerpt: **Also an Academy Award–winning film starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly—directed by Ron Howard** The powerful, dramatic biography of math genius John Nash, who overcame serious mental illness and schizophrenia to win the Nobel Prize. “How could you, a mathematician, believe that extraterrestrials were sending you messages?” the visitor from Harvard asked the West Virginian with the movie-star looks and Olympian manner. “Because the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the same way my mathematical ideas did,” came the answer. “So I took them seriously.” Thus begins the true story of John Nash, the mathematical genius who was a legend by age thirty when he slipped into madness, and who—thanks to the selflessness of a beautiful woman and the loyalty of the mathematics community—emerged after decades of ghostlike existence to win a Nobel Prize for triggering the game theory revolution. The inspiration for an Academy Award–winning movie, Sylvia Nasar’s now-classic biography is a drama about the mystery of the human mind, triumph over adversity, and the healing power of love.
