Book excerpt: Lognormal distributions are one of the most commonly studied models in the sta tistical literature while being most frequently used in the applied literature. The lognormal distributions have been used in problems arising from such diverse fields as hydrology, biology, communication engineering, environmental science, reliability, agriculture, medical science, mechanical engineering, material science, and pharma cology. Though the lognormal distributions have been around from the beginning of this century (see Chapter 1), much of the work concerning inferential methods for the parameters of lognormal distributions has been done in the recent past. Most of these methods of inference, particUlarly those based on censored samples, involve extensive use of numerical methods to solve some nonlinear equations. Order statistics and their moments have been discussed quite extensively in the literature for many distributions. It is very well known that the moments of order statistics can be derived explicitly only in the case of a few distributions such as exponential, uniform, power function, Pareto, and logistic. In most other cases in cluding the lognormal case, they have to be numerically determined. The moments of order statistics from a specific lognormal distribution have been tabulated ear lier. However, the moments of order statistics from general lognormal distributions have not been discussed in the statistical literature until now primarily due to the extreme computational complexity in their numerical determination.

Book excerpt: The CRC Handbook of Tables for the Use of Order Statistics in Estimation revises and significantly expands upon the well-known Order Statistics and Their Use in Testing and Estimation (Volume 2), published in 1970. It brings together tables relating to order statistics from many important distributions and provides maximum likelihood estimations of their parameters based on complete as well as Type-II censored samples. This practical reference describes in detail the method of computation used to construct the tables and illustrates their usefulness with practical examples. The CRC Handbook of Tables for the Use of Order Statistics in Estimation is easy to use and provides information on order statistics estimation at your fingertips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an up-to-date coverage of the theory and applications of ordered random variables and their functions. Furthermore, it develops the distribution theory of OS systematically. Applications include procedures for the treatment of outliers and other data analysis techniques. Even when chapter and section headings are the same as in OSII, there are appreciable changes, mostly additions, with some obvious deletions. Parts of old Ch. 7, for example, are prime candidates for omission. Appendices are designed to help collate tables, computer algorithms, and software, as well as to compile related monographs on the subject matter. Extensive exercise sets will continue, many of them replaced by newer ones.

Book excerpt: First derived within the context of life-testing, inverse Gaussian distribution has become one of the most important and widely employed distributions, and is often used to model the lifetimes of components. It is also used as a model in many varied applications, including fatigue analysis, economic prediction analysis, and the analysis of extreme events such as rainfall and flood levels. The interesting features and properties of this distribution make it an important and realistic model in a variety of problems across numerous disciplines. Because of the broad range of applications, this handbook will be useful not only to members of the statistical community but will also appeal to applied scientists, engineers, econometricians, and anyone who desires a thorough evaluation of this important topic.

Book excerpt: This book is a reference for librarians, mathematicians, and statisticians involved in college and research level mathematics and statistics in the 21st century. We are in a time of transition in scholarly communications in mathematics, practices which have changed little for a hundred years are giving way to new modes of accessing information. Where journals, books, indexes and catalogs were once the physical representation of a good mathematics library, shelves have given way to computers, and users are often accessing information from remote places. Part I is a historical survey of the past 15 years tracking this huge transition in scholarly communications in mathematics. Part II of the book is the bibliography of resources recommended to support the disciplines of mathematics and statistics. These are grouped by type of material. Publication dates range from the 1800's onwards. Hundreds of electronic resources-some online, both dynamic and static, some in fixed media, are listed among the paper resources. Amazingly a majority of listed electronic resources are free.

In many industrial experiments involving lifetimes of machines or units, experiments have to be terminated early. Progressive Censoring first introduces progressive sampling foundations, and then discusses various properties of progressive samples. The book points out the greater efficiency gained by using this scheme instead of classical right-censoring methods.

It summarizes 35 years of results the author obtained from analyzing dose rate equivalents for the Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) and for Solar Particles Events (SPE). This edition also includes two new chapters on skin epidermal epithelium and risk assessment for myeloid leukemia, as well as extended revisions addressing the radiation effects on the blood-forming system. Mathematical models are used to explain the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation on the dynamics of vital body systems, like the hematopoietic system, the development of autoimmune diseases, and the mortality dynamics in homogeneous and nonhomogeneous mammalian populations. The proposed methodology of these studies, the models themselves, and the obtained results are of a great theoretical significance and can find wide practical use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of environmetric research and its applications... Environmetrics covers the development and application of quantitative methods in the environmental sciences. It provides essential tools for understanding, predicting, and controlling the impacts of agents, both man-made and natural, which affect the environment. Basic and applied research in this area covers a broad range of topics. Primary among these are the quantitative sciences, such as statistics, probability and applied mathematics, chemometrics, and econometrics. Applications are also important, for example in, ecology and environmental biology, public health, atmospheric science, geology, engineering, risk management, and regulatory/governmental policy amongst others. * Divided into 12 sections, the Encyclopedia brings together over 600 detailed articles which have been carefully selected and reviewed through the collaborative efforts of the Editors-in-Chief and the appropriate Section Editor * Presented in alphabetical order all the articles will include an explanatory introduction, extensive cross-referencing and an up-to-date bibliography providing literature references for further reading. Presenting state of the art information in a readable, highly accessible style, the scope and coverage provided by the Encyclopedia of Environmetrics will ensure its place as the landmark reference for the many scientists, educators, and decision-makers working across this multidisciplinary field. An essential reference tool for university libraries, research laboratories, government institutions and consultancies concerned with the environmental sciences, the Encyclopedia of Environmetrics brings together for the first time, comprehensive coverage of the full range of topics, techniques and applications covered by this multidisciplinary field. There is currently no central reference source which addresses the needs of this multidisciplinary community. This new Encyclopedia will fill this gap by providing a comprehensive source of relevant fundamental concepts in environmetric research, development and applications for statisticians, mathematicians, economists, environmentalists, ecologist, government officials and policy makers.
