Book excerpt: Master the effective, practical style of Kung Fu practiced by the Taiwanese police with this illustrated martial arts guide. Police Kung Fu: The Personal Combat Handbook of the Taiwan National Police is a comprehensive approach for the realistic use of traditional kung fu by law enforcement and corrections officers--and ordinary citizens--to maximize personal safety while minimizing the necessary use of force. Lavishly illustrated with photographs of Taiwanese police officers systematically demonstrating tactics that have been used with great effect for several decades in Taiwan, Police Kung Fu teaches responses to unarmed attackers and to attacks with guns, knives, and assorted clubs and other weapons, as well as police baton techniques for individual and crowd control. With a thorough grounding in traditional Wing Chun kung fu, renowned for its direct power and speed, the police training demonstrated in this volume is readily adaptable to a wide variety of controlled-force situations. Police Kung Fu is a great resource for every law enforcement professional and those interested in the martial arts and self defense.

Book excerpt: Jottings is a collection of poems written over a period of twenty years. Most of the poems in this collection are contextual. Written in different genres of poetry, while some of the poems appear as general statements but having a bearing on nature. Others are responses of the poet to social/economic/political issues and those related to women. The poems reflect the mood and views of the poet. While poems like "A Symbol of Beauty," "Horizon," "Loss" appear simple, they have an underlying meaning, the philosophy of life. In poems like "Disgusting" and "To a Brave Son," the poet points an accusing finger at the powers that be for the sorry state of affairs. "Love" brings out the true meaning of the word while describing the different stages in the life of a person. The life of a girl child form the theme of "Who Am I." The hapless condition of young women and children, especially girls, are brought to fore in "To Ponnus and Malalas" and "Sadist Minds." "Down Memory Lane" goes back in time. There are also satirical poems that take potshots at and ridicule the superstitious and the believers like "Light That Darkens," "In Fool's Paradise," "Onam," and "In Your Name." Again, while "Bapu" is on Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals, it ridicules all those who earned fame in his name. While "Motherland's Boys" talks of the deterioration of India-Pakistan relations, "How Many More Children Will You Kill" chides Israelis and Palestinians for deaths of innocent children. "An Unknown Past" looks at an old person struggling in vain to open the locked doors of her memory. There are also poems that talk of a personal loss and some that snub individuals that make haughty statements. All the illustrations in the book are by cartoonist and animator Mr. Swathi Jaikumar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent, compact manifesto that will teach you how to protect your rights, your freedom, and your future when talking to police. Law professor James J. Duane became a viral sensation thanks to a 2008 lecture outlining the reasons why you should never agree to answer questions from the police--especially if you are innocent and wish to stay out of trouble with the law. In this timely, relevant, and pragmatic new book, he expands on that presentation, offering a vigorous defense of every citizen's constitutionally protected right to avoid self-incrimination. Getting a lawyer is not only the best policy, Professor Duane argues, it's also the advice law-enforcement professionals give their own kids. Using actual case histories of innocent men and women exonerated after decades in prison because of information they voluntarily gave to police, Professor Duane demonstrates the critical importance of a constitutional right not well or widely understood by the average American. Reflecting the most recent attitudes of the Supreme Court, Professor Duane argues that it is now even easier for police to use your own words against you. This lively and informative guide explains what everyone needs to know to protect themselves and those they love.

Book excerpt: We live in a world of violence, where crime has become a national disaster for many countries. To survive in modern society, one cannot be passive and must be prepared for everything, in order to protect themselves and their loved ones. Carrying a self-defense weapon as an EDC tool could be the difference between life and death. But finding the right weapon means striking the balance between effectiveness, dealing with restricting laws, and practical real-life applications. When used effectively, the tactical flashlight is a fantastic self-defense weapon that you can carry everywhere, especially where weapons like guns, knives, and mac spray are illegal. It combines the power to blind an attacker with the ability to hit hard and cause significant but non-lethal damage, that will stop any assault. Law enforcement officers, military, and security professionals alike appreciate this small, legal, and discreet self-defense tool. Unfortunately, however, very little has been written about the tactical flashlight as a standalone self-defense weapon, leaving it shrouded in mystery. The purpose of this one-of-a-kind book is to provide ordinary people - men, women, and children - regardless of their gender, size, or skill, with easy, straight-forward, and practical self-defense knowledge, to be able to defend themselves efficiently against any attacker and violent situation on the street, work, or home, in a relatively short period of time. Contents include: Principles of self-defense Psychological preparation Awareness & Avoidance Human body vital points & Natural weapons Why should you consider a flashlight How to choose the best tactical flashlight Carrying & Using the flashlight effectively Functional training methods And much more!
