Book Synopsis Optimization in Function Spaces by : Amol Sasane
Download or read book Optimization in Function Spaces written by Amol Sasane and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly readable volume on optimization in function spaces is based on author Amol Sasane's lecture notes, which he developed over several years while teaching a course for third-year undergraduates at the London School of Economics. The classroom-tested text is written in an informal but precise style that emphasizes clarity and detail, taking students step by step through each subject. Numerous examples throughout the text clarify methods, and a substantial number of exercises provide reinforcement. Detailed solutions to all of the exercises make this book ideal for self-study. The topics are relevant to students in engineering and economics as well as mathematics majors. Prerequisites include multivariable calculus and basic linear algebra. The necessary background in differential equations and elementary functional analysis is developed within the text, offering students a self-contained treatment.

Book Synopsis Probabilistic Metric Spaces by : B. Schweizer
Download or read book Probabilistic Metric Spaces written by B. Schweizer and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This distinctly nonclassical treatment focuses on developing aspects that differ from the theory of ordinary metric spaces, working directly with probability distribution functions rather than random variables. The two-part treatment begins with an overview that discusses the theory's historical evolution, followed by a development of related mathematical machinery. The presentation defines all needed concepts, states all necessary results, and provides relevant proofs. The second part opens with definitions of probabilistic metric spaces and proceeds to examinations of special classes of probabilistic metric spaces, topologies, and several related structures, such as probabilistic normed and inner-product spaces. Throughout, the authors focus on developing aspects that differ from the theory of ordinary metric spaces, rather than simply transferring known metric space results to a more general setting.
Book Synopsis Gauge Theory and Variational Principles by : David Bleecker
Download or read book Gauge Theory and Variational Principles written by David Bleecker and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2005-12-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a framework for describing and organizing the basic forces of nature and the interactions of subatomic particles. A detailed and self-contained mathematical account of gauge theory, it is geared toward beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates in mathematics and physics. This well-organized treatment supplements its rigor with intuitive ideas. Starting with an examination of principal fiber bundles and connections, the text explores curvature; particle fields, Lagrangians, and gauge invariance; Lagrange's equation for particle fields; and the inhomogeneous field equation. Additional topics include free Dirac electron fields; interactions; calculus on frame bundle; and unification of gauge fields and gravitation. The text concludes with references, a selected bibliography, an index of notation, and a general index.

Book Synopsis The Functions of Mathematical Physics by : Harry Hochstadt
Download or read book The Functions of Mathematical Physics written by Harry Hochstadt and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern classic, this clearly written, incisive textbook provides a comprehensive, detailed survey of the functions of mathematical physics, a field of study straddling the somewhat artificial boundary between pure and applied mathematics. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the theorists who devoted themselves to this field — pioneers such as Gauss, Euler, Fourier, Legendre, and Bessel — were searching for mathematical solutions to physical problems. Today, although most of the functions have practical applications, in areas ranging from the quantum-theoretical model of the atom to the vibrating membrane, some, such as those related to the theory of discontinuous groups, still remain of purely mathematical interest. Chapters One and Two examine orthogonal polynomials, with sections on such topics as the recurrence formula, the Christoffel-Darboux formula, the Weierstrass approximation theorem, and the application of Hermite polynomials to quantum mechanics. Chapter Three is devoted to the principal properties of the gamma function, including asymptotic expansions and Mellin-Barnes integrals. Chapter Four covers hypergeometric functions, including a review of linear differential equations with regular singular points, and a general method for finding integral representations. Chapters Five and Six are concerned with the Legendre functions and their use in the solutions of Laplace's equation in spherical coordinates, as well as problems in an n-dimension setting. Chapter Seven deals with confluent hypergeometric functions, and Chapter Eight examines, at length, the most important of these — the Bessel functions. Chapter Nine covers Hill's equations, including the expansion theorems.
