Looking for a handbook on how to design and upscale edible insect rearing? This easy to read handbook describes the basic knowledge and a detailed step-by-step plan for rearing edible insects. The book presents information essential for further development of the entire insect chain and contains many practical recommendations for the start/setup of professional insect rearing. The reader is first submerged into the fascinating world of edible insects such as black soldier fly, housefly, mealworm, cricket, and locust. A concise overview is provided to get more familiar with the biology and physiology of edible insects. Based on this basic knowledge the book focuses on design principles for large scale insect production, facility design, engineering, insect production management, management of unwanted organisms, economics, and aspects related to the legal framework. The chief editor, co-editors and lead authors of the chapters are from Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands. These countries have a tradition of professional insect rearing. Reading this handbook will contribute to a successful entrepreneurship in edible insect rearing. This handbook also contains very interesting teaching materials for secondary, higher, and university education.contains very interesting teaching materials for secondary, higher, and university education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth presentation of every major element comprising professional insect rearing programs. Its scope includes the entire range of insect rearing from small-scale, tabletop rearing to industrial-scale, mass rearing but focuses on medium-scale rearing, and within medium-scale rearing on the use of artificial rather than natural diets. By applying the principles and procedures discussed here, one can establish new rearing programs or improve existing ones. In addition, procedures are presented to either prevent or to diagnose and solve many of the problems that may arise in insect rearing.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of techniques and devices for collecting and rearing insects that should appeal to educators as well as professional or amateur entomologists. Insects are easy to collect and raise and have a fascinating array of life histories, which make them great for classroom studies. With minimal space and costs, colonies of insects can be raised in classrooms for use in behavioral and physiological studies. The small size and tremendous reproductive capacity of insects are ideal for ecological studies of dispersion, predation, parasitism and reproduction in compressed timeframes and small areas relative to similar studies of larger organisms. This book explains the various techniques of how to build rearing devices and use insect collecting to stimulate insect exploration. Anyone with basic hand tools, a little skill, and patience can construct these devices. A materials list, instructions for assembly, construction tips, and photographs are included for each device discussed in the text. Most of them require less than 1 hour assembly time and cost very little because they can be made from recycled items. There is also a review of simple statistics for use in the classroom, and, if appropriate, suggestions for classroom projects including simple statistical analyses.

Book excerpt: The ability to produce insects has a broad impact on human lives in a wide array of areas including insect pest and weed management, human and veterinary medicine, insect production for food and nutrient supplements, as well as research and education. Insect rearing began as a simple desire, yet never a simple task, has continued to expand, both in methodology and application. A desire to learn about and understand insects grew into a desire to control and manipulate insects, both to suppress and to preserve. Rearing individual life stages extended to continuous rearing and maintaining evolved into production. Ultimately, this results in insects physically and behaviorally similar to those from nature. New multi-omics technologies (transcriptomics, nutrigenomics, metabolomics, etc.) recently increased knowledge of microbiomes, and the manipulation of nutrigenomic analysis and statistical optimization modeling have enabled advances in insect nutrition. These advances have resulted in a better understanding of the effects of the food stream ingredients and rearing conditions on the insect's physiological and biochemical functions, in addition to promoting the production of high-quality insects. The production has application in research, insect control, and most recently, specialized food niche. Before one application has been fully realized, a new application has emerged, often supported with the application of new technologies. Given this pattern of advancement followed by benefits, there is every reason to anticipate more to come in the field of insect rearing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a handbook of artificial diets for rearing insects, mites and spiders. Its origin goes back to my association with Dr H. L. House at the Research Institute of the Canadian Department of Agriculture at Belleville, Ontario. In 1967, Dr House published a bulletin Artificial Diets for Insects: A Compilation of References with Abstracts. We jointly updated this work in 1971 to include papers published from 1967-1970 and to take special note of the use of antimicrobial agents. In 1970 I left Belleville to join the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in New Zealand where I continued to catalogue insect diets, and in 1972 compiled a Bibliography on Artificial Diets for Insects and Mites covering the period of 1900-1970. This was followed in 1974 by another publication entitled Artificial Diets for Insects containing insect diets published during May 1970-December 1972. These publications laid the foundations for the present volume. The aim of this book is to give complete but concise coverage of exi- ing knowledge of insect dietetics. It brings together in one volume the most complete survey of artificial diets for insects, mites and spiders to date. I hope its content will aid all those concerned with insect rearing programmes. I would like to thank the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for permission to publish this book. I am particularly grateful to Dr J. M. Hoy, Director of the Entomology Division, for his encouragement.
