Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Mediæval Geography and History The characteristics of this volume are the same as those of the first: precision, condensation, and luminous arrangement. It is precisely what it pretends to be - a manual, a sure and conscientious guide for the student through the crooks and tangles of mediæval history. Many things of course are omitted; many rather indicated than developed; - but all the great principles of this extensive period are carefully laid down, and the most important facts skilfully grouped around them. There is no period of history for which it is more difficult to prepare a work like this, and none for which it is so much needed. The leading facts are well established, but they are scattered over an immense space; the principles are ascertained, but their development was slow, unequal, and interrupted. There is a general breaking up of a great body, and a parcelling of it out among small tribes, concerning whom we have only a few general data, and are left to analogy and conjecture for the details. Then come successive attempts at organization, each more or less independent, and all very imperfect. At last, modern Europe begins slowly to emerge from the chaos, but still under forms which the most diligent historian cannot always comprehend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Medieval Rural Life brings together the latest research on peasantry in medieval Europe. The aim is to place peasants – as small-scale agricultural producers – firmly at the centre of this volume, as people with agency, immense skill and resilience to shape their environments, cultures and societies. This volume examines the changes and evolutions within village societies across the medieval period, over a broad chronology and across a wide geography. Rural structures, families and hierarchies are examined alongside tool use and trade, as well as the impact of external factors such as famine and the Black Death. The contributions offer insights into multidisciplinary research, incorporating archaeological as well as landscape studies alongside traditional historical documentary approaches across widely differing local and regional contexts across medieval Europe. This book will be an essential reference for scholars and students of medieval history, as well those interested in rural, cultural and social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Ancient Geography and History The work of which the present Handbook is a translation, consists of three portions: - a) Outlines of Ancient History. b) Outlines of Medieval History. c) Outlines of Modern History. The whole forms a work of moderate extent, and of great accuracy. The second portion is already in the press, and the Editor cannot but entertain a confident hope that, when the whole work is published, it will have a considerable effect in promoting the study of General History in our Classical Schools. A complete set of Questions upon the Historical portions has been added: but no liberty has been taken with the text in any part except that which relates to the History of the Jews. For this portion, the author is not responsible; for though he has generally been followed, the alterations made were too numerous and too much interwoven with the original matter, to allow of their being distinguished by brackets. A small and cheap, but accurate, Classical Atlas, intended as a Companion to the Editor's "Histories Antique Epitome," is about to be published by Messrs. Rivington. It will be found sufficient for the student of this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
