Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written to be a convenient reference for the working scientist, student, or engineer who needs to know and use basic concepts in complex analysis. It is not a book of mathematical theory. It is instead a book of mathematical practice. All the basic ideas of complex analysis, as well as many typical applica tions, are treated. Since we are not developing theory and proofs, we have not been obliged to conform to a strict logical ordering of topics. Instead, topics have been organized for ease of reference, so that cognate topics appear in one place. Required background for reading the text is minimal: a good ground ing in (real variable) calculus will suffice. However, the reader who gets maximum utility from the book will be that reader who has had a course in complex analysis at some time in his life. This book is a handy com pendium of all basic facts about complex variable theory. But it is not a textbook, and a person would be hard put to endeavor to learn the subject by reading this book.

There are important applications in physics, engineering, and other aspects of technology. This Handbook presents contributed chapters by prominent mathematicians, including the new generation of researchers. More than a compilation of recent results, this book offers students an essential stepping-stone to gain an entry into the research life of complex analysis. Classes and seminars play a role in this process. More, though, is needed for further study. This Handbook will play that role. This book is also a reference and a source of inspiration for more seasoned mathematicians—both specialists in complex analysis and others who want to acquaint themselves with current modes of thought. The chapters in this volume are authored by leading experts and gifted expositors. They are carefully crafted presentations of diverse aspects of the field, formulated for a broad and diverse audience. This volume is a touchstone for current ideas in the broadly construed subject area of complex analysis. It should enrich the literature and point in some new directions.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this comprehensive and accessible text continues to offer students a challenging and enjoyable study of complex variables that is infused with perfect balanced coverage of mathematical theory and applied topics. The author explains fundamental concepts and techniques with precision and introduces the students to complex variable theory through conceptual develop-ment of analysis that enables them to develop a thorough understanding of the topics discussed. Geometric interpretation of the results, wherever necessary, has been inducted for making the analysis more accessible. The level of the text assumes that the reader is acquainted with elementary real analysis. Beginning with the revision of the algebra of complex variables, the book moves on to deal with analytic functions, elementary functions, complex integration, sequences, series and infinite products, series expansions, singularities and residues. The application-oriented chapters on sums and integrals, conformal mappings, Laplace transform, and some special topics, provide a practical-use perspective. Enriched with many numerical examples and exercises designed to test the student's comprehension of the topics covered, this book is written for a one-semester course in complex variables for students in the science and engineering disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is meant as a text for a course on complex analysis at the advanced undergraduate level, or first-year graduate level. Somewhat more material has been included than can be covered at leisure in one term, to give opportunities for the instructor to exercise his taste, and lead the course in whatever direction strikes his fancy at the time. A large number of routine exercises are included for the more standard portions, and a few harder exercises of striking theoretical interest are also included, but may be omitted in courses addressed to less advanced students. In some sense, I think the classical German prewar texts were the best (Hurwitz-Courant, Knopp, Bieberbach, etc. ) and I would recom mend to anyone to look through them. More recent texts have empha sized connections with real analysis, which is important, but at the cost of exhibiting succinctly and clearly what is peculiar about complex anal ysis: the power series expansion, the uniqueness of analytic continuation, and the calculus of residues. The systematic elementary development of formal and convergent power series was standard fare in the German texts, but only Cartan, in the more recent books, includes this material, which I think is quite essential, e. g. , for differential equations. I have written a short text, exhibiting these features, making it applicable to a wide variety of tastes. The book essentially decomposes into two parts.

Book excerpt: A thorough introduction to the theory of complex functions emphasizing the beauty, power, and counterintuitive nature of the subject Written with a reader-friendly approach, Complex Analysis: A Modern First Course in Function Theory features a self-contained, concise development of the fundamental principles of complex analysis. After laying groundwork on complex numbers and the calculus and geometric mapping properties of functions of a complex variable, the author uses power series as a unifying theme to define and study the many rich and occasionally surprising properties of analytic functions, including the Cauchy theory and residue theorem. The book concludes with a treatment of harmonic functions and an epilogue on the Riemann mapping theorem. Thoroughly classroom tested at multiple universities, Complex Analysis: A Modern First Course in Function Theory features: Plentiful exercises, both computational and theoretical, of varying levels of difficulty, including several that could be used for student projects Numerous figures to illustrate geometric concepts and constructions used in proofs Remarks at the conclusion of each section that place the main concepts in context, compare and contrast results with the calculus of real functions, and provide historical notes Appendices on the basics of sets and functions and a handful of useful results from advanced calculus Appropriate for students majoring in pure or applied mathematics as well as physics or engineering, Complex Analysis: A Modern First Course in Function Theory is an ideal textbook for a one-semester course in complex analysis for those with a strong foundation in multivariable calculus. The logically complete book also serves as a key reference for mathematicians, physicists, and engineers and is an excellent source for anyone interested in independently learning or reviewing the beautiful subject of complex analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic introduction to functions of one complex variable. Its novel feature is the consistent use of special color representations – so-called phase portraits – which visualize functions as images on their domains. Reading Visual Complex Functions requires no prerequisites except some basic knowledge of real calculus and plane geometry. The text is self-contained and covers all the main topics usually treated in a first course on complex analysis. With separate chapters on various construction principles, conformal mappings and Riemann surfaces it goes somewhat beyond a standard programme and leads the reader to more advanced themes. In a second storyline, running parallel to the course outlined above, one learns how properties of complex functions are reflected in and can be read off from phase portraits. The book contains more than 200 of these pictorial representations which endow individual faces to analytic functions. Phase portraits enhance the intuitive understanding of concepts in complex analysis and are expected to be useful tools for anybody working with special functions – even experienced researchers may be inspired by the pictures to new and challenging questions. Visual Complex Functions may also serve as a companion to other texts or as a reference work for advanced readers who wish to know more about phase portraits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a textbook for a first course in the theory of functions of one complex variable for students who are mathematically mature enough to understand and execute E - I) arguments. The actual pre requisites for reading this book are quite minimal; not much more than a stiff course in basic calculus and a few facts about partial derivatives. The topics from advanced calculus that are used (e.g., Leibniz's rule for differ entiating under the integral sign) are proved in detail. Complex Variables is a subject which has something for all mathematicians. In addition to having applications to other parts of analysis, it can rightly claim to be an ancestor of many areas of mathematics (e.g., homotopy theory, manifolds). This view of Complex Analysis as "An Introduction to Mathe matics" has influenced the writing and selection of subject matter for this book. The other guiding principle followed is that all definitions, theorems, etc.

It is a substantially revised and updated edition of the popular text by Robert B. Ash, offering a concise treatment that provides careful and complete explanations as well as numerous problems and solutions. An introduction presents basic definitions, covering topology of the plane, analytic functions, real-differentiability and the Cauchy-Riemann equations, and exponential and harmonic functions. Succeeding chapters examine the elementary theory and the general Cauchy theorem and its applications, including singularities, residue theory, the open mapping theorem for analytic functions, linear fractional transformations, conformal mapping, and analytic mappings of one disk to another. The Riemann mapping theorem receives a thorough treatment, along with factorization of analytic functions. As an application of many of the ideas and results appearing in earlier chapters, the text ends with a proof of the prime number theorem.
