Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemistry, Theoretical, Practical, and Technical The Authors, after having received their chemical education in my laboratory, officiated for some years as my assistants, and I have had ample opportunities of witnessing their talents for imparting informa tion, and smoothing the path of the Student, in every department of analysis. The present volume is a synopsis of their experience in laboratory teaching; it gives the necessary instruction in chemical manipulation, a concise account of general chemistry, as far as it is involved in the Operations of the laboratory, and lastly, qualitative and quantitative analysis. The plan adopted in the instructions for analysis is essentially that which was first introduced by Baron Liebig, and which, modified in accordance with the progress of science, and with the special requirements of the English student, I have daily practised myself, for the last eight years, in this laboratory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Chemistry, Theoretical and Practical The incessant changes which have characterized the sci ence of Chemistry since the introduction of the new nomen clature have rendered successive editions of Professor Fowne's work more representative of the editor's than of the author's views. Under these circumstances, Mr. Watts very properly contemplated the issue of a work of his own, based upon that of Professor Fowne's, but his untimely death prevented the full accomplishment of the project. A large portion of the work, however, was completed by the issue of a volume on Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, and it has seemed to the publishers a duty to lay before chemists and students the latest thoughts of so renowned a scientist. The volume has, therefore, been reprinted with Professor Fowne's Organic Chemistry, in a form which experience with many previous editions has proved to be popular with those for whom the work is intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Physical Chemistry In organising the practical work in connection with a class of Physical Chemistry (1) a teacher may himself carry out the measurements while the whole class look on, or (2) he may divide the class into sets of two or more and assign one experiment to each set, or (3) he may adopt the "one student one experiment" plan. Of these three methods, the third is undoubtedly the best, because a student is made responsible for an experiment in a way that can never be when another is associated with him in the work. In the second method the tendency is for one student of a set to lead while the others make no attempt at initiative and lose the best part of the training obtainable in a laboratory. Close supervision is, of course, essential when valuable instruments are being handled, and frequently the teaching staff is too small for the demonstrating to be efficient according to the third plan, so that the second is adopted, which, however, is much to be preferred to the first. The time available for Practical Physical Chemistry is usually very meagre, and has an important bearing on the organisation of Laboratory Work. The best system would be one in which the question of time had never to be considered. As things are, however, a student, as a rule, can afford out of his day's work only one period of two to three hours for Practical Physical Chemistry. It is important, therefore, that the exercises should be such that they can be finished in one period not extending beyond the limits mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry While we do not undervalue the usefulness of a correct language to express the facts and theories of a Science, we have the strongest objection to frequent and capricious changes, in which the good is uncertain and prospective, while the evil is certain and immediate. Chemistry is not the Science of one nation, of one profession, or of one section of chemists. Among civilized nations it has now a com munity of language, and by this language, it is more closely linked to Arts, Manufactures, and Medicine, than any other branch of knowledge; hence, changes, to be useful, should be such as are re quired by urgent necessity, and are likely to command general acceptance by their reasonableness and expediency. After all, it must be remembered that these changes are not in the facts, but in a supposed improvement in the mode of expressing them; and if only partially adopted, they necessarily lead to confusion. Reasoning from the past to the present, it is not too much to infer that a student of Chemistry must be prepared for a new crop of systematic names, and a new classification of elements and compounds, every ten years. Our intention in the preparation of this volume has been, not to furnish a Treatise on the Science, but to provide the student, and general reader, with a plain introduction to the subject. With ample materials at our disposal to produce two volumes in place of one, we have studiously endeavored to compress within these pages, a selection of the more important facts and doctrines of Modern Chemistry. We have adopted for the explanation of these facts, that simple chemical language which has found acceptance in the Schools and Colleges of Great Britain, France, and Germany, as well as in the best treatises on the Science. In addition to the general properties of bodies, we have attached to the description of each substance, a summary of its most important characters, with an account of the special tests required for its detec tion. The student will thus have in this book a Manual of practical chemistry. As an adjunct to this branch of the Science, the subject of practical toxicology has been introduced in reference to the most important poisons, and the processes for their detection. We have also treated, as fully as our space would permit. The chemical principles on which photography is based, and have given some practical rules for the guidance of those who wish to apply their chemical knowledge to this interesting art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Physical Chemistry Theory and Practice It is probable that the majority of students will have had already a few of the more distinctly physical experiments. Much of the general information regarding units, etc., in the Introduction and in the first part of several chapters is also probably familiar to some, but is included for completeness and for reference. Physical Chemistry apparatus which is understood with difficulty or the description of which is instructive, is described under the appropriate topic in the body of the book. All other apparatus, methods, etc., are described in the Intro duction. The Introduction also contains references to all the apparatus considered elsewhere, together with mathematical data, discussion of errors, etc., so that the book constitutes a complete manual for all ordinary work in Physical Chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry, Theoretical and Practical The lamented death of the Author has caused the revision of this edition to fall into the hands of others, who have fully sustained its reputation by the additions which they have made, more especially in the portion devoted to Organic Chemistry, as set forth in their preface. This labour has been so thoroughly performed, that the American Editor has found but little to add, his notes consisting chiefly of such matters as the rapid advance of the science has rendered necessary, or of investigations which had apparently been overlooked by the Author's friends. These additions will be found distinguished by his initials. The volume is therefore again presented as an exponent of the most advanced state of Chemical Science, and as not unworthy a continuation of the marked favour which it has received as an elementary text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Inorganic Chemistry, Descriptive, Theoretical, and Practical, Vol. 1: A Manual for Advanced Students; Non-Metallic Elements T hey may change position, color, structure, temperature, and, in fact, may undergo almost innumerable other changes. If a polished piece of iron is exposed to the air, its bright surface becomes covered with a reddish-colored matter if a current of electricity is passed through it, it attracts other pieces of iron; if it is exposed to a high temperature, it becomes red. Energy in some of its many forms causes these changes. Energy is sometimes defined as the power to do work, as the power to overcome resistance z'.e. To change the position or relation of bodies or parts of bodies. Work is the act of producing a change in opposition to force. Forms of Energy. There are many forms of energy, such as heat, light, chemism, motion, and electricity. Each of these forms of energy may be accompanied by, and may be changed into, other forms. Examine, for example, the pro duction of electrical energy, taking as the starting-point the burning of the fuel under the boiler. The chemical energy pro duced by the burning of the fuel is transformed into heat and light energy by the water this energy is changed to molecular energy or energy of motion; this sets in motion the engine, which in turn starts the dynamo, which in its turn converts this motion into electrical energy. The electrical energy meets with resistance at the lamps and is converted into heat and light again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work' not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the appa ratus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materi ally aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of coal-based fuel economy over the course of the nineteenth century was one of the most significant features of America’s Industrial Revolution, but the transition from wood to mineral energy sources was a gradual one that transpired over a number of decades. The documents in these volumes recreate the institutional history of the American coal industry in the nineteenth century - providing a first-hand perspective on the developments in regard to political economy, business structure and competition, the rise of formal trade unions, and the creation of a national coal trade. Although the collection strives to be wide-ranging in region and theme, the Pennsylvania anthracite coal trade forms the thematic backbone as it became the most important American mineral resource to see successful development throughout the nineteenth century. Consequently it saw unprecedented levels of intervention by the federal government. The texts for this collection were selected for their accessibility to modern readers as well as their relationship to a series of common themes across the nineteenth century American coal industry - with headnotes and annotations provided to explain their context and the reasons for their inclusion. The second volume, following on from the first, traces the continuation of the anthracite boom and also introduces new concerns for the coal industry. Overall the period from 1835-1875 saw the American coal trade expand from a hit-or-miss business dominated by risk-taking proprietary firms to a well-funded industry that employed the resources of state governments, large mining corporations and powerful railroads in order to keep a steady stream of mineral fuel flowing to the growing industrial and commercial heating markets of the United States. The transformation generated many conflicts - which are illustrated by the documents in this volume.

Of this work has encouraged the author to publish Part II., which completes the volume. The same general method of present ing the subject that was adopted for Part I. Has been fol lowed in this part. The treatment given the classification of the elements by the periodic law it is hoped will prove sufficiently extended to meet the needs of students using this work, although many points in reference to it have not been spoken of. Much work in collecting and bringing periodic facts together has been merely suggested, and then left for the. Student (and instructor) to do, in the hope that it will stimulate a study of these facts, and thus impress them on the mind of the learner. The writer believes that quantitative study should begin early in a course in chemistry, and so much of this has been introduced as experience has shown beginners can profitably do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Organic Chemistry This little volume has been written as an introduction to 'organic chemistry for the use of first year medical students and for senior science students in schools. By treating the theoretical and practical sides of the subject concurrently, it is intended that the book may serve the double purpose of text-book and laboratory manual. It is divided into three parts. In the first part the general principles underlying determinations of purity, empiric and molecular formulae and structure, are explained and illustrated by a careful study of two of the most familiar and most easily procurable organic substances, viz., methyl and ethyl alcohols. In the second part, the aliphatic compounds are described in a more systematic fashion and the third part is devoted to a brief account of the more important members of the aromatic series. It is hoped that the book will fill a gap and serve the purpose for which it was written. I wish to acknowledge the valuable help I have received from Mr. A. T. Simmons in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
