Book Synopsis Plotting, Squatting, Public Purpose and Politics by : Robert Jan Baken
Download or read book Plotting, Squatting, Public Purpose and Politics written by Robert Jan Baken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Since independence in 1947, India has undergone a phase of rapid urbanization. New planning laws have been passed, new organizations established, public policy documents and discussion papers prepared and a host of land and housing schemes have been implemented. Still, however, the vast majority of urban expansion is an unplanned process that takes the form of squatting and illegal or semi-legal land subdivision. By looking in detail at two rapidly growing cities in Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada and Viaskhapatnam) this book explores cultural, physical-spatial, political and economic determinants of the allocation of urban land and of urban growth in India in historical context. It focuses on the interplay between the government and the organizations in charge of their implementation, and the private sector on the other. Special attention is given to the conditions of the urban poor, with the changes in their socio-economic conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since mid-century, global population has grown much faster than the cropland area. The trend is likely to continue in the next century, dropping cropland per person to historically low levels. The ever smaller per capita cropland base will make food self-sufficiency impossible for many countries, and will test the capacity of international markets to meet a growing demand for imported food.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy by : Chetan Ghate
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy written by Chetan Ghate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's remarkable economic growth in recent years has made it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its rapid growth, however, has been accompanied by widening regional disparities, poverty, malnutrition, and socio-political instability. Understanding India's dualistic development process and the emergence of the Indian economic miracle are crucial in solving the obstacles India faces in transforming itself into a modern 21st-century economy. The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy features research on core topics by leading scholars to understand the Indian economic miracle and the key debates confronting the Indian economy. The Handbook moves beyond traditional boundaries by featuring areas of research that will be important in the future, setting an academic standard for current and future research on the Indian economy. The Handbook is divided into eight major sections featuring expert contributions on a host of issues. These range from India's historical development before and after 1947; tackling poverty through innovative public policy; industrialization; health, education, and the demographic transition; governance and institutional reform; macroeconomic policy reform; and India's interaction with the world economy. A final Looking Ahead chapter reflects upon an agenda for economic research in the 21st century. Ambitious in scope, diverse in its coverage of topics, and a rare unified and comprehensive treatment of India's complex and dynamic development process, The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy is a must-read for both researchers who are new to the field, as well as those who want to update and extend their knowledge to the frontier of the field.

Book Synopsis Second International Handbook of Urban Education by : William T. Pink
Download or read book Second International Handbook of Urban Education written by William T. Pink and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 1363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second handbook offers all new content in which readers will find a thoughtful and measured interrogation of significant contemporary thinking and practice in urban education. Each chapter reflects contemporary cutting-edge issues in urban education as defined by their local context. One important theme that runs throughout this handbook is how urban is defined, and under what conditions the marginalized are served by the schools they attend. Schooling continues to hold a special place both as a means to achieve social mobility and as a mechanism for supporting the economy of nations. This second handbook focuses on factors such as social stratification, segmentation, segregation, racialization, urbanization, class formation and maintenance, and patriarchy. The central concern is to explore how equity plays out for those traditionally marginalized in urban schools in different locations around the globe. Researchers will find an analysis framework that will make the current practice and outcomes of urban education, and their alternatives, more transparent, and in turn this will lead to solutions that can help improve the life-options for students historically underserved by urban schools.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Tribe and Religions in India by : Maguni Charan Behera
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Tribe and Religions in India written by Maguni Charan Behera and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook explores the diversity of religious practice in tribal cultures in India. It looks at the interactive spaces where the religious practices of tribes and other communities have changed and adapted through the years in contemporary India. Tribe as a social category emerged in India during the colonial period; this handbook departs from the conventional approaches to studying ‘tribal religion’ and analyses the intersections of spirituality, rituals, gender and identities within tribal religion through a crosscultural and pan-Indian perspective. Tribes in India follow various religious denominations including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and traditional indigenous faiths. The chapters in this volume provide insights into the cross-cultural religiosity of tribes via ethnographic accounts and the study of animism, life cycle rituals, ancestor worship, shrines and religious institutions, revivalism, religious identities, religious conversion, transcendental religious spaces and the space for gender, identity and politics within religious traditions. It also discusses conflicts, contestations, anxieties within and the politics of religious traditions and identities in India and how tribal communities and the state negotiate with these issues. This and its companion handbook, The Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Readings on Tribe and Religions in India: Emerging Negotiations, provide a comprehensive look into the religious life and practices of a very diverse group of tribes in India. This book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the fields of religion, anthropology, indigenous and tribal studies, social and cultural anthropology, sociology of culture, sociology of religion, development studies, history, political science, folkloristic, and colonialism.
