Book excerpt: Author William Bonk raises awareness and provides a critical resource for thousands potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals at shuttered Fort McClellan in Alabama. Bonk, a licensed private investigator, draws attention to the real possibility that veterans, their families, and civilians once assigned to now-closed Fort McClellan (FMC), Alabama were subjected to hazardous environmental conditions to include chemical weapon material and toxic chemicals starting in the early 1950s and continuing through 1999 and beyond. "I want to attract the attention of the 535 members of the U.S. Congress," said Bonk, also a retired supervisory criminal investigator and former U.S. Army military police trainee who trained at FMC. I want them to be able to have a reason to move forward with a FMC health registry and work toward a presumption within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that FMC veterans were adversely affected by exposure to dangerous contaminants." The sad reality according to Bonk is that, "because of latency, dosage, time, and risk factors, FMC veterans have to fight individually to attempt to prove an in- service event and the service connection with a nexus between the two. In most cases, they were unknowingly exposed to a plethora of contaminants, making any argument difficult to prove." Bonk establishes a timeline and meticulously traces the post's historical use of hazardous materials, such as chemical weapons material, ionizing radiation, pesticides, and heavy metals. Bonk bases his findings on data from public U.S. government reports, open source news articles, and multiple interviews with trainees and trainers stationed at FMC, which was comprised of almost 50,000 acres and originally home to the U.S. Army's Military Police and Chemical Schools. The reports often reveal ambiguity, uncertainty, speculation, and a total lack of due diligence when rendering conclusions and recommendations regarding contaminated parcels.

Book excerpt: The Handbook on Inequalities in Sentencing and Corrections among Marginalized Populations offers state-of-the-art volumes on seminal and topical issues that span the fields of sentencing and corrections. The volume is a comprehensive and fresh approach to examining sentencing and community and institutional corrections. The book includes empirical and theoretical essays and recent developments on the pressing concerns of persons of traditionally non-privileged statuses, including racial and ethnic minorities, indigenous populations, gender, immigrant status, LGBTQ+, transgender, disability, aging, veterans, and other marginalized statuses. The handbook considers a wide range of perspectives for understanding the experiences of persons who identify as a member of a traditionally marginalized group. This volume aims to help scholars and graduate students by providing an up-to-date guide to contemporary issues facing corrections and sentencing. It will also assist practitioners with resources for developing socially informed policies and practices. This collection of essays contributes to the knowledge base by summarizing what is known in each area and identifying emerging areas for theoretical, empirical, and policy work. This is Volume 7 of The ASC Division on Corrections and Sentencing Handbook Series. The handbooks provide in-depth coverage of seminal and topical issues around sentencing and corrections for scholars, students, practitioners, and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VA Handbook for Veterans and Advocates was written by a service-connected combat veteran and licensed attorney for fellow veterans and advocates who want to file a claim with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”) for disability compensation, health care and other benefits. Advocates and family members will also find it useful. The Handbook provides an A-to-Z explanation of the claims process, from gathering records and speaking with accredited individuals to filing a claim for benefits and appealing improper denials. It explains the hierarchy of veterans law, how to understand and apply decisions from the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the significance of the M21-1 Manual, and more. VA Handbook also breaks down the modernized appeals system that went into effect in February 2019, with a detailed look at each option that is now available to veterans in the updated appeals process. It should be required reading for all veterans and advocates. If you are going to file a claim for VA benefits, get VA Handbook for Veterans and Advocates.

Download or read book Handbook of Social Resources in Kansas written by Kansas. State Department of Social Welfare and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The development of the social welfare program in Kansas indicated the need for current information about agencies and organizations interested in helping people. In response to this request the State Department of Social Welfare prepared a compilation of these social resources in 1939 under the title of a Handbook of Social Resources. Then 10 years later the material in the Handbook was revised and more agencies included. Information about many of these resources was brought up to date in 1951. The present revision represents the most recent information about social resources available to persons residing in Kansas. Although the Handbook was compiled primarily for persons engaged in organized social welfare activities, it has been of value to professional, religious, commercial, labor, social, and civic organizations interested in the health, welfare, and other social resources of Kansas"--Preface.
