Book Synopsis Nordic Private Collections of Chinese Objects by : Minna Törmä
Download or read book Nordic Private Collections of Chinese Objects written by Minna Törmä and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which Nordic private collectors displayed their collections of Chinese objects in their homes. This leads to a reconsideration of how to define collecting and display by analysing the difference between objects serving as decorative or collectible items, while tracing collecting and display trends of the twentieth century. Minna Törmä examines four Scandinavian collections as case studies: Kustaa Hiekka, Sophus Black, Osvald Sirén and Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen, all of whom had professional backgrounds (a jeweler, two businessmen and a scholar) and for whom collecting became a passion and an educational endeavour. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, museum studies, Chinese studies and design history.
Download or read book Dutch Silver written by J.W. Frederiks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume on Dutch silver deals with those embossed ecclesiastical and secular objects which are not described in Volume I. Since that volume is confined to plaquettes, tazze and dishes, together with the complete oeuvre of the three most famous artists Adam and Paul van Vianen, and Lutma, a large variety of objects remains to be dealt with. Amongst these are many very important and beautiful vessels. The principal pieces described in this volume are of ecclesiastical origin such as monstrances, ciboriums, chalices, pyxes, chrismatories, mass-cruets, incense-boats and burners, altar-thrones, lecterns, missal covers, canon-board frames, altar -bells, altar-vases, altar -candlesticks, sanctuary lamps and sconces. Further, secular silver such as plaquettes, tazze and dishes, that have come to our knowledge since the publication of the first volume, and also plaquette medals, boxes, book-covers, beakers, tankards, cups, bowls, basins, bottles, plate used for the toilet, for the table, candlesticks and plate used for the service of tea, coffee and chocolate. A general survey of a number of objects is given in the Introductions to the first and second volumes (Volume I, p. VI; Volume II, p. VI~XIV). Certain additional observations concerning the nature, technique of manufacture and decoration of the particular types of article illustrated in this volume are, however, necessary.

Book Synopsis Hip Heritage and Museum Practices in Contemporary Hybrid Markets by : Lizette Gradén
Download or read book Hip Heritage and Museum Practices in Contemporary Hybrid Markets written by Lizette Gradén and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on how museums prioritize and produce content, Hip Heritage demonstrates how economic issues play an ever-larger role in determining how cultural heritage is being framed and presented in contemporary heritage museums. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the authors at seven museums over the course of five years, this book offers an in-depth analysis of heritage museums in Nordic, Scandinavian and North American contexts. It investigates how economic realities, coupled with the cultural contexts in which museums operate, affect how these institutions organize, manage and develop their collections to make themselves relevant in society. Once charged with the primary task of educating citizens about their cultural identity and history, national museums and heritage organizations are also under pressure to rethink their market demands and meet stakeholders’ increasing interest in growing visitor numbers and expanding economic returns. Simultaneously, many museums are part of a cultural sector with diminished public funding and increased competition for the existing financing. Against this background, this book questions: ‘When the budget is tight, whose heritage counts most?’ It considers museums as arenas for heritage politics in action on the local, national and international levels, as well as at the institutional level. Hip Heritage will appeal to scholars and students engaged in the study of ethnology heritage, museum studies, marketing, leisure and tourism, public folklore, and sociology.
