Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few decades have seen a stretching and exchange of local, regional and national languages, identities, cultures, and economies worldwide as a consequence of globalisation and technology development. Significantly, the languages of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia have been attracting increasing strategic, commercial and civic attention. Collectively referred to as ‘Languages of the Wider World’ (LWW), these languages are important given the emergence of new centres of capital and cultural accumulation in the 21st century, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs). This volume focuses on LWW in use, and on their teaching and learning. It ranges from a highly localized focus (on learners and teachers of Community/Heritage Languages), to broader national and international foci (on policy makers and multilingualism; on teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary systems). It aims to inspire researchers and practitioners to work on languages other than the ones that have been the mainstay of the field to facilitate the development of a vibrant and critical community of enquiry in Languages of the Wider World. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Language Learning Journal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers diverse perspectives on language and culture teaching explored against the background of a fast-paced globalized world of increased mobility and opportunity. While teachers are pressed to reinvent and adapt the existing teaching practices, researchers are invited to conduct studies with a view of implementing the findings in the classroom practice. This collection presents discussions of different aspects of foreign language instruction, language skills and learning strategies, and foreign languages in professional contexts, as well as the role of intercultural competence in language teaching and teacher education. Offering insights into a variety of foreign language and culture teaching contexts throughout Europe, this volume will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in applied linguistics and language and culture teaching methodology, including both experienced and novice language teachers, in the Balkan region and beyond.

Book excerpt: The twenty-five essays accompany, illustrate and underpin the conceptual framework elaborated in Post-Communist Mafia State, published in conjunction with this volume. Leading specialists analyze the manifestations of the current political regime in Hungary from twenty-five angles. Topics discussed include the ideology, constitutional issues, social policy, the judiciary, foreign relations, nationalism, media, memory politics, corruption, civil society, education, culture and so on. Beyond the basic features of the economy the domains of taxation, banking system, energy policies and the agriculture are treated in dedicated studies. The essays are based on detailed empirical investigation about conditions in today's Hungary. They nevertheless contribute to the exploration of the characteristic features of post-communist authoritarian regimes, shared by an increasing number of countries in Europe and Central Asia.

Book excerpt: After the shock of the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, which Hungarians perceived as an unfair dictate, the leaders of the country found it imperative to change Hungary’s international image in a way that would help the revision of the post-World War I settlement. The monograph examines the development of interwar Hungarian cultural diplomacy in three areas: universities, the tourist industry, and the media—primarily motion pictures and radio production. It is a story of the Hungarian elites’ high hopes and deep-seated anxieties about the country’s place in a Europe newly reconstructed after World War I, and how these elites perceived and misperceived themselves, their surroundings, and their own ability to affect the country’s fate. The defeat in the Great War was crushing, but it was also stimulating, as Nagy documents in his examination of foreign language journals, tourism, radio, and other tools of cultural diplomacy. The mobilization of diverse cultural and intellectual resources, the author argues, helped establish Hungary’s legitimacy in the international arena, contributed to the modernization of the country, and established a set of enduring national images. Though the study is rooted in Hungary, it explores the dynamic and contingent relationship between identity construction and transnational cultural and political currents in East-Central European nations in the interwar period.
