Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Great Depression to the economic boom of the postwar years, Hall County had much in common with the rest of the country during World War II while still experiencing the war in its own way. A devastating tornado, a naval air station, growth in textile and agricultural industries, and changes in how citizens viewed the world meant that Hall County emerged from the war with a unique perspective on the possibilities for its future. Using original images of historic places and artifacts, this book tells the story of Hall County and its people during the years leading up to, during, and immediately after World War II--a time that changed the county forever and assured its central role in the development of northeast Georgia.

Book Synopsis War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts by : Steve Rajtar
Download or read book War Monuments, Museums and Library Collections of 20th Century Conflicts written by Steve Rajtar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique state-by-state directory covers monuments, memorials, museums, markers, statues and library collections that relate to the veterans, weapons, vehicles, airplanes, victims or any other aspect of war in which the United States participated. While a site may have been created before 1900 (such as a fort), there must be some operational or historical tie to a twentieth century conflict to be included here. General collections, such as museums of aviation, are included if they house materials related to a twentieth century conflict. The coverage is so thorough that statues honoring veterans of the Civil War appear if veterans of later wars are on their rosters of honorees. Another example of the comprehensiveness of this compilation is in the inclusion of memorials to victims of war such as the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas. For each site, the following information is given: street address, phone number, website and email address (if applicable), days and hours of operation, admission fees, other necessary information, and a brief description of the site.

Book Synopsis University of Tennessee by : Aaron D. Purcell
Download or read book University of Tennessee written by Aaron D. Purcell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state, the legislature of the Southwest Territory chartered Blount College in Knoxville as one of the first three colleges established west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1807, the school changed its name to East Tennessee College. The school relocated to a 40-acre tract, known today as the Hill, in 1828 and was renamed East Tennessee University in 1840. The Civil War literally shut down the university. Students and faculty were recruited to serve on battlefields, and troops used campus facilities as hospitals and barracks. In 1869, East Tennessee University became the states land-grant institution under the auspices of the 1862 Morrill Act. In 1879, the state legislature changed the name of the institution to the University of Tennessee. By the early 20th century, the university admitted women, hosted teacher institutes, and constructed new buildings. Since that time, the University of Tennessee has established campuses and programs across the state. Today, in addition to a rich sports tradition, the University of Tennessee provides Tennesseans with unparalleled opportunities.
